Just picked up a refurbished Philips 3505 for $89 shipped on line.... to replace a failed LG DVD recorder. Before I go into detail, I also own a Philips DVDR 3575H hard drive recorder, which I think is an excellent machine, so I expected the 3505 to be similar. I was wrong.
The picture quality on this machines is sub-par compared to the 3575H, and
not even close to the quality of my Sony & Panasonic machines.
The dvd drive is slow to load, play and format or erase, but I'm used to that on the other Philips. However, when fast forwarding through recorded discs, the picture becomes 'wavy' like an old VHS vcr. It stutters and momentarily freezes. I've never seen this on any DVD machine, player or recorder.
Being an experienced dvd recorder user, I haven't looked at the manual, but
a few things strike me as being odd. After a recording overnight, for example, when you turn the machine back on, the recorder boots to the DVD menu, which I find annoying. Setting a Timer program is easy, but there's no on-screen indication that the Timer is set, just a tiny red light on the display panel. In order to get to the Timer Menu, you must hit a red button on the the remote labelled Timer.
The remote itself, has teeny tiny buttons which are hard to see and are very close together, nothing like the remote that came with the 3575H.
The digital channel scan takes a long time, although this machine was able to detect all my QAM cable stations, the digital picture can only be described as 'weak'. To me some channels look like a VHS picture.
I have not tested a variety of discs yet, I use mostly DVD+RW erasble discs,
which seem to work fine. However, upon inserting a blank DVD+RW, the machine does not show any indication that the disc needs to be formatted,
as with all my other machines.
The dvd drive mechanism is rather noisy, you can hear it spinning as it's working. It sounds like it's laboring to write the disc information.
I bought this machine mainly for the price, and good reviews on the vendor's website, which to me are false. It came with a 90 day warranty,
I don't expect it to last a year honestly, it seems to be cheaply made.
The 3505 it has HDMI upconversion, I haven't tested that function yet, just hooked up via Component outputs for the time being. A lousy picture will still be a lousy picture even with upconversion.

HDMI on this unit seems to try to always stretch sdtv analog channels to 16:9 without care for the aspect ratio, and there is no menu to fix it. (1680x1040 is my screen resolution), so unless you can rescale what comes in digitally on your tv (mine wont let me), the only solution is is to go component video and turn on 480p mode.

In component video mode it is putting out a 4:3 sdtv picture for normal channels, and a anamorphic 16:9 in a 4:3 frame for anything widescreen be it from the tuner, ot from a dvd, that you can stretch with the widescreen stretch of the tv.

Bought from Walmart for $181 including tax (6.75%). It records to Sony and Memorex DVD+RW fine. Play DIVX/avi files fine. Does not display the whole file name though.

It has a ZOOM feature that can zoom the video playback to 1.2, 1.5, and 2 times. The ZOOM feature does not work on broadcast video (I mean over the air stations). It only works on playback video, for example, DIVX files. So you can record first and then watch with ZOOM to workaround the small picture issue.

The recorder has a lot of connectors on the back panel. For each type (RF, Composite, S-Video, Component), it has an IN and OUT. So this is nice in that you can daisy-chain other players in.

The digital channel scan is slow. Worse, it will not allow you to switch to a different channel before it completes its scan. But the main purpose of this thing is for recording and some playback. So not a big issue here.

I actually found that the ATSC tuner in this recorder is better than the tuner in my Sanyo TV. A pleasant surprise.

I bought this for a replacement of my 4 year old Philips DVDR75 which was starting to have trouble recording.

It will not play PAL region free DVDs that my old Philips would.

It is very SLOW, Slow startup, slow everyting, but I am comparing it to my old Philips DVDR75.

Video picture is OK. Off the Air Digital TV is very good, but some stations do not fill the screen ?

I will try it for another week or so and if I don't like it I will return it to the store for refund.

I will report later after I try a few other things.
