Cannot get a DVD-R to play on this machine. The machine always says they are blank. Using what I was told is the best media out there, Taiyo Yuden.

Philips DVDR3358 worked for me preaty good for 12 months. Right after warranty(1year) expired it got broken- every time stops by itself after about1/2 hour (manual recording, timer recording, any source. Tried new disc DVD-RW, cleaned laser lenses nothing helped......

Works fine. Only acted up once when turning it on. The display turned off and did not go back on again until I switched the power off and on. This however only happened once.
The one downside is that whenever you schedule a recording, you always get the window where you have to enter a ShowView number or cancel. After canceling, you can schedule the recorder as normal though. That works quite well and very simple. Even my girlfriend knows how to handle the machine.
Signal from RF Tuner is quite good (offcourse, that also depends on what kind of cable you have connected and I have connected some quite expensive cables). Using SCART to copy my VHS tapes to DVD makes the quality of the film a little bit better it seems even.
Good price for this machine as well compared to other GOOD QUALITY DVD-Recorders available here in the Netherlands.

- the only DVD writer I know of (perhaps I don't know that much) that doesn't run a cooling fan. It's a plus for me as I run the recorder in my bedroom. The unit gets pretty warm even without playing or recording as the digitizing and disc-spinning are on any time the machine is on.
- tried and successfully play back various archived .mpg, .avi, .mp3 but didn't notice the codec settings. Some 640x480 AVIs show only the top left 1/4 of the picture.
- writes on 1 old Memorex 4x +RW and 1 old Memorex 2x -RW. Able to read on my PC's LG 8x writer and a relatively new stanadlone Toshiba player. Had problem recognizing the blank RW once (forgot if it was the + or -) until I put some DVD video in it and have the Philips recorder erase it.
- writes on 1 no-label 4x +R. After finalize, the disc can be read from the above writer and player and also my old DVD-ROM drive and an old standalone player which are known to not read various discs.
- does not recognize a blank RiData 4x -R. Not sure if it's the particular brand or the recorder itself. I heard that the earlier models cannot write -R and -RW ( http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=150180 ). At least mine can write to -RW.
- reads my brother's Panasonic camcorder thru' the iLink port no problem. Picture quality of HQ recording from the iLink port is excellent and can hardly be found any degradation.
- A note on comparing picture quality... Do not compare with picture passing thru' the recorder which is NOT realtime but digitized instead. So whatever glitches in digitizing you'll see both in the recorder "realtime" output and the recordings anyways.
- TV tuner seems to be a bit noisy but it could be because of the digitzation and lack of noise reduction algorithm in the "realtime" output.
- For cable signal with ok noise level, picture quality at HQ (1hr) is OK and is comparable to PC TV capture card with 80MB/minute Divx6 compression (which is my usual setting before the DVD recorder). At SP (2hr) I can see barely noticeable blocking with fast moving scenes and is perhaps a bit worse than my PC setup mentioned above. LP (4hr) is acceptable if there aren't many action scenes which show quite significant blocking. EP (6hr) should be avoided if possible.
- the remote response is slow as other people have found with most Philips recorders. To do FF/REV, you have to hold the Next/Prev chapter button for more than a second. It takes long time to "boot up" before you can do anything, including removing the disc from the tray.
- now the biggest turn-off for me... the recordings aren't time-searchable on any machine (although the recorder itself can do time-search on other DVDs).

Worked great for two weeks, then refused to recognize any disc I put in (Unknown Disc error). I have no idea what happened! I guess (hope!) it was just a bad unit. The features were just what I wanted, but the one I got was completely unreliable. Next one will not be Philips...
