Visually appealing, operating system looks nice but is slow and some functions are harder to access than in a previous Philips recorder I had, e.g. to divide a title one has to stop dvd playback and go in again via a completely different menu and find your place again. System is quiet. I have had good disc compatibility when playing back my recordings on other machines. The recorded titles are of a good quality. Has played every DivX file I have tried. There are some firmware bugs and Philips have not made any firmware updates available (again in contrast to my last Philips machine). I find the VCR part of the 3320 to have poor playback quality but I only use for dubbing to DVD.

However, I have decided to replace my 3320 mainly due to the superior editing facilities on VR mode DVD-RW machines.

This DVD Recorder has a superb operating system and was very easy to use and powerful. The first obvious problem though is the noise of the fan running in the back of the cabinet.

I persevered with it for 2 weeks but returned it to the store for an exchange to a different make after I found that the discs it created wouldn’t play reliably on my other DVD players. The most annoying problem was that my catalogue of home movies (15 DVDs made over the last 3 years on my Dell PC with +R DVD Writer and Roxio Movie Creator Software) wouldn’t play back on the Philips. This hasn’t been a problem on more than 10 DVD players that I have successfully played the home movie DVDs.

If you read the manual Philips say that they won’t guarantee compatibility with any other player or recorder so buyer beware.

When the shop’s engineer called Philips he told me that Philips had received 3 calls like mine that day.

Fine recorder except for one major flaw: It writes DVD+R discs which are not compatible with some other DVD-players. The finalized discs I made refused to play on two different computer DVD-players, which have had no problems with any other discs.

In order to get working DVD+R copies of my home movies I had to record to DVD+RW at first, then copy the resulting files to my computer's harddrive, and correctly burn the files to a DVD+R myself.
Some things that I changed/did: Added a missing empty "AUDIO_TS" folder, removed Philips's redundant "VIDEO_RM" folder, burned the "VIDEO_TS" and "AUDIO_TS" folders to a DVD+R using ISO 9660 (no "Joliet")/UDF 1.02. The resulting DVD+R discs work.

It is a shame that this recorder is not fully compatible with DVD-video standards, because it produces good results as far as picture quality goes. Dubbing from VHS to DVD or vice versa is very easy.

The recorder played all Xvid and DivX files I threw at it (about 10) with excellent picture quality. The resolution is limited to PAL (720 X 576 pixels), however.

I decided to return the recorder to the store because of the DVD+R problems.

Very nice device! It can play almost everything I have. Recording works good, but once i tried to record second TV show episode on DVD+RW, where another one was burned and edited, it recorded only few seconds and after that there were only errors and the edge of media was badly scratched. Maybe, it was my fault, that media was scratched, maybe not - I didn't cheked the surface because I was sure that it's perfect. Nevertheless, it don't like DVDs with errors - it can freze and sometimes you would not be able to eject the media without turning the device offline by ejecting power cord.
It plays all DivX and XviD files I tried, except files with resolution higher 720*576. It don't have as much audio codecs as PC, so some *.avi files may play without sound if audio codec in this files are rare.
Internal TV tuner works perfectly, I can't say anything else about it.
VCR part works good too, dubbing videotapes to DVD allows to eliminate analog noise and make colors more real. Resulting DVD looks almost as commercial DVD. I tried this procedure on commercial VHS with Star Trek: First Contact and now i have DVD version as well :)
VCD and SVCD plays OK, XSVCD may cause some problems, but not neceserraly.
MP3 plays perfectly, but I didn't tested VBR MP3's. WMA files declared, but I didn't tested them. JPEG files can be shown one by one or in slideshow mode. Both works perfect.
In summary, one of the best devices in this class.

It is still very new to me, but the first impressions are quite good. So far it has played everything I've stuffed in it. It doesn't say much, despite a cooling fan on the back.
It takes a little while to power up, but once it has started, it reacts promptly. The on-screen menus are nice and clear to read, and the menu structure is easy to navigate, even without the manual in the other hand.

A few times, I've seen the menu doing something else than what I pressed on the remote. Like moving the cursor up, while I pressed down arrow.
And it seems that it isn't possible to program the timer, using only the front display. You have to have the TV on to navigate the timer menu.

Once I've seen a total freeze of the recorder. It was during playback of a commercial DVD, where I was searching backwards through the movie at the highest search speed. But the DVD in question has made various playback problems on several other DVD players as well.

All in all I am quite pleased with this recorder.
