Comments:
Records video from firewire, S-video, RCA inputs to hard disc - create an edited playlist then write to DVD-R or DVD-RAM. Also record photos from JPG on Smart Media to create photo shows on DVD. Biggest shortcoming is no firewire output.

The 3040 is my first DVD recorder. The picture quality is excellent, and it is easy to use. It has a 40GB hard drive built in, so you can record to that, then edit out what you don't want, then write it to a disc. Or, you can just record straight to DVD.

This model includes 3 composite/S-video inputs (2 on back panel, 1 in front), 2 composite/S-video outputs, RF in/out, and a Firewire port (on the front panel only) for hooking up your DV equipment. The manual states there may be some compatibility issues with some DV equipment, but my Sony 520 Digital 8 camcorder worked perfectly.

I've tried using Memorex DVD-R discs as well as cheap ones from shop4tech.com. Both DVDs made from these have played back flawlessly in my JVC XV-S500BK, Panasonic A120, DVD-ROM drive in a Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop, and a Toshiba DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive in my desktop PC.

My complaints are few. First, the remote control is not very good due to the poor layout of the buttons. Secondly, you can NOT transfer footage from a DVD-R back to the hard drive. You can only do this if you use DVD-RAM discs. Finally, you can NOT hook up your computer to the 3040 through the Firewire port. You must first record your program onto DV tape (or whatever video format you want), then hook up your camcorder / player to the 3040 and record it again. This was not a big deal for me, but video professionals who are on a tight schedule may not like this extra step.

Overall, I am very pleased with this recorder. It is great for the casual user and for archiving footage. However, since you can't make your own custom menu screens (the recorder gives you 9 templates to choose from), this would certainly not be good for those wanting to author a fancy DVD. For me, though, it's worth it since I don't have to spend hours encoding my video to MPEG2. Well done, Panasonic!
