Excellent recorder/player by Panasonic!
The manual is a bit misleading though.
First, although it says playback of DVD+R Discs is not supported, I have suuccessfully played back numerous Sony DVD+R's, although they must have the Bitsetting DVD-ROM in order to work.
Second, the unit is what I would call a quasi-multisystem. It will play VIDEO CD's that are in the PAL format, but it WILL NOT play DVD's recorded in the PAL format.
I've used this recorder since 2002 without flaw. DVD-RAM Support is a major plus for archival, and the ability to handle cartridge type Disc's is also a plus.
Now for the few problems I've had, that kept this from getting a perfect 10.
1. Some tapes recorded on a home video camera -- not storebought tapes with a form of DRM, simply don't copy. This is something I've yet to find a way around.
2. VCD's playback just fine when they're storebought or are burned as a simple, menu-less disc, this unit doesn't handle complex VCD's well but then, I didn't buy a VCD player now did I?
3. The unit neglects to mention it supports DVD-Audio with a PCM track, however I believe most DVD-A's are supported this way.
4. Finally, the Direct Navigator needs some work, typing in the name of a show can become tedious as you have no option to use a Keyboard and have to enter everything with the remote.
All in all though, this unit is a nice one, a 40GB HDD, DVD-R/RAM Recording, multiple playback formats, and a built-in TBC among other features make this one of the best recorders, especially considering it's age. The $500 is what I saw it last priced at, although it was rumored the unit was discontinued in favor of newer models. |

hello
here are some comments from my side. i have this recorder since one year and I'm very happy with it. I think that there is no need to post technical features, because they should be known...
I had "only" 2 problems within this year,
once i used a complety cheap noname DVD-R which brought the recorder to a crash - I never used this type again;
second problem I had was, that the recorder stucks during the copy from HDD to DVD-R in the last minute of the movie; I edited the movie again at the end, and then it worked;
In difference to "ruediger" from austria (I'm also from there) I had no problems till now with EMTEC/BASF media. I the work on other DVD players(sony, panasonic, and some cheap nonames) and the also work on PC DVD drives (toshiba). and they also work on SUN(solaris) DVD drives.
Other media type I used till no are SONY (same compatibility like EMTEC)
greetings from austria
Media compatiblity:
DVD-R: TDK ok, EMTC/BASF no, Stordata (Mediamarkt) 90% ok
(ok means compatiblity to Pioneer 434, UMAX and Matshita drives)
(+) HD Editing: good useability (cut commercials)
(+) Codec provides superior picture quality, Sound quality
(+) FlexRec feature for optimal encoding using entire DVD-R regardless of movie length
(-) Transfer HDD=>DVD-R only in real time
(-) Macrovision detection => analogue DVD copies only possible with either hacked source ("MV off") drive or Anti-MV "Video Stabilizer" (f.e. CONRAD)
(-) No digital DVD duplication
(-) No codefree hack known (at least to me)
(-) Digital Video (DV-In) for Videocameras only
(-) no remote control for sat-receiver, so you´ve got double effort in programming scheduled recordings.
Overall: Great machine, I really enjoy it, not too hard to use.
Price in Austria/Europe: 1299 €.

| Had mine for about a year now. Works great. The quality of transfers from hdd to dvd-r seems to be very good to me. At 1hour and 2hour per dvd speeds it has been as good or better than my source vhs tapes. My home movies on digital-8 tapes I save in Xp speed and they look great. Programs around 2 and a half hours or longer will start to show quality loss. I use 6hr per dvd mode only to save tv that I want to watch, not transfer. Wish there were more menu options, that you could upgrade to a larger hard drive, and that you could customize the chapter points. |

Good device. The only and important thing I don't like in it is that it loses quality when dubbing from HDD to DVD-R. It means a digital-analogue-digital convertion, what is not acceptable in an expensive digital device.

This machine works great as a traditional videorecorder.
I wasn't pleased with the illegal software on the machine. As the law in this country (The Netherlands) permits you to make a private copy for your personal use, this machine blocks that. I already tried at Panasonic but they just won't respond.
So I had no scruples in bying this device called HOL-DVDMAX for €65 at www.interneeds.com. Plugged it on the HS2 inlet socket, connected up to another DVD standalone player and now I can make a copy of any movie. Without the HS2 preventing this. So that's great.
What I still regard as illegal is that you can't copy back from the internal drive to the hard disk. I'ld certainly be interested in an update of the software of the HS2.
Would also be nice if a bigger disk (120 Meg) would fit.

I have found that this machine had a Lip-Sync problem but only with live analogue TV. DVD no problem, recorded TV - no problem (probably because it plays back digitally), but a definite problem with Live analogue TV.
Panasonic have had reports of a lip-sync problem with a sky connection, but worryingly they say this is within acceptable parameters !! I have exchanged it for another model to find the same thing. Sometimes more noticable on one channel than another, sometimes more noticable than other times. (especially during fast talking). I sent mine back for a refund.
I have read that it may be something to do with the progressive scan facility that may have a delay factor associated with it that is no problem with digital, but takes a fraction longer for Analogue.
As I use this machine foas my Plasma TV tuner it is on all the time and not just to record, so perhaps I have noticed it more than others. Same problem whether via SVHS/composite and stereo/digital sound.
Sorry - otherwise a great stable machine.

| Ok, to duplicate another commercial dvd with the Panasonic unit, you do a modified player to play the origianl dvd. I picked one up for $77 on ebay>it's called a modified APEX 1500. It will enable you to copy any dvd in the world with the Panasoinc unit. |

I have owned the HS-2 for about 4 months. It is one of my best investments. The best feature as I am concerned is the "Flexible Recording". The unit allows for editing the commercials out of TV shows. The shows are usually stored on the internal hard drive. From there I can record the material to a DVD-R. The felxible recording adjusts the bitrate (compression ratio) to exactly fit the space on the DVD-R. So a 1hr and 15 min show will fit exactly on the disk with the best possible quality. Also 2hrs 41 min will fit exactly on the disk. So will any other combination from 1 to 6 hours. The unit also allows for flexible recording to the hard drive or ram disk. This is usefull in case you have one hour of space left in "XP" mode (the best quality)and you have a one and one half hour show to record. You don't have to drop back to the next lower quality to fit your show on the disk.
You can also copy movie DVD's using a pal/ntsc/secam converter from http://www.threedoubleyou.com/ |

the last poster made a few comments that aren't quite correct. you can't copy dvd's by just hooking a different dvd player to the panasonic, unless your OTHER dvd player has some sort of macrovision defeat (or, i assume the dvd isn't copy protected). otherwise, when you try to copy a disk, you get weird results. sometimes you can copy the menus, but once the dvd starts to play, the panasonic says "no way" and it quits. i've tried this with several commercial dvds and 3 different players (an x-box, a ps2 and a samsung).
also, in the mentioned solution of avoiding the purchase of dvd-ram discs, the poster didn't mention that each copy you make is going to add more and more mpeg artifacts to the copy.
other than that, i agree with the closing statement :)

| Ok, I've now made over 100 dvds without any problems and 100% compatibility with dvd players around the world, except for a few memorex dvd-rs I tried. Now, nobody mentions this, so i'll bring it up>>>although this machine is not designed for dvd to dvd burning, all you have to do is use another dvd player to play any dvd into the panasonic recorder and you can copy ANY DVD. This has two applications: 1) you can copy a dvd you rent, 2)you actually can avoid buying the expensive Rams because you can just burn to dvd-r and if you need another copy later you then can play it on your other player back onto the HD of the Panasonic and then burn another dvd-r! Simple. I love this machine! I am trading music dvd-s all around the world! Did I say I LUV THIS MACHINE!!!johnny |

( Using it with my TIVO )
Bought the Merit Line DVD-R sample Pack and ran tests on playback of the media on about 6 different players. THe best media I found was the Samsung BeAll DVD-Rs from Meritline.com. Have burnt 40 so far and no coasters! Play back flawlessly on these players...

Seems to be a bit picky about VCDs, a lot are quite jerky, tried diff media.

Makes very good copies of OTA,cable and Satellite programming. Apparently, this Panasonic model (as well as other Panasonic recorders) suffer from what has been described(and confrimed by measurements) as a "LUMA bug. When the HS2 finalizes a DVD-R it re-encodes the source material, and incorrectly adds a lot of "brightness", giving the copy a "washed out" look when played on a set top player OTHER than Panasonic brand. Please note that, while this "bug" has been well researched, measured and documented, its appears that this phenomenon is 'in the eye of the beholder" and does not seem to affect the majority of HS2 owners, myself included. personally, I have played my finalized DVD-R's on Playstations II's, Toshiba and Panasonic units and have not noticed the "bug".
I REALLY like the HS2! While its not a TIVO, the VCR Plus + capability is very extensive, and its time shift recording using SP mode is as good as TIVO's or REPLAY's "best" mode. Using SP mode on the HS2, you get up to 18 hours recording time (40 GB HD). In XP, you get about 8 hours. The menu choices are very basic, as are the editing capabilities, but again, that really was not what it was designed to do. You can, however dub in high speed mode from the HD to DVD-RAM, and if you have a DVD-RAM capable reader/DVD-writer in your PC, you can add menus using some of the ULEAD software products, if you really want fancy menus. (There is actually a Panasonic LF-D311 inside the HS2).
Overall, its a fine addition to my Home Theatre system!

| I love it! Got it for $744.00 online. Stay away from memorex dvd-Ram and dvd-rs as they have spotty performance. I have transferred dozens of VHS rock concerts to DVD-r and trade them around the world. So far the recorded discs have had a 95% compatibility rate. This machine is pure fun. |

Just thought I'd throw my 2-cents in quickly. The first unit I got had all sorts of problems and I finally gave up testing after a lot of hassle. I got a replacement and have had no problems whatsoever although I haven't done more than 15 XP DVD-R recordings as I've just fallen in love with DVD-RAM and even though they are expensive, the quatlity and ease of use are fantastic. I just ordered a spindle of 25 of the Optodisc 9.4gb discs (I've only used the cartridge type so far) for just under $175 including UPS ground and it will be interesting to see if they work as well as the cartridge protected ones. Also, I am starting to do more DVD-R's and I'll report back if I run into any problems.
Useage tip: Allenalb mentioned a while back that you had to fast forward to the end of a recoding to make sure it all recorded properly. I found that buy starting to play the recording after the one you want to check (or do a few second dummy record after your recording), you can hit rewind and it will rewind right on through to the previous recording. I use it to see if it's worth doing a Divide and chopping off the end of a recording prior to saving on disc.
If anyone finds a way for me to replace the internal drive with a bigger one, please let me know!!
Thanks for everyone's posts.

third post...
i was finally able to get the first unit replaced... it crashed so much, the hard disk bit it...
the second unit crashed on the first disk i tried to burn. it ended up being a reboxed floor model (thanks, best buy).
after getting the third unit, it seemed to be ok, but eventually started doing the same thing again. at this point, i was pretty much ready to just cut my losses.
BUT...
it was then that i thought, maybe it COULD be the discs after all...
the first two spindles of verbatim's never gave me a problem... it wasn't until almost the end of the spindle of ritek's i started having issues... and i was still using the second spindle...
i placed an order for samsung bealls, and while waiting the 10 days for them to arrive, bought 2 separate 4 packs of tdk's.
all of the tdk's dubbed in XP mode perfectly. the remaining ritek's kept failing (the power-down and recover problem).
the samsungs arrived a couple of days ago, and 1/5th of the way through the spindle, they are performing perfectly.
so it seems it was the media i was using all along. i went back to meritline, and as it turns out, while the samsung discs are rated 2X for all drives, the ritek's are only 2X on one model of pioneer, and 1X on all other drives. the tdk's and verbatim's were also 2x. it never even occured to me that XP mode would be 2x (hello, mcfly!)
so as a warning to all of you, dubbing at XP using cheap media...
if you see that "recover" message enough, eventually it will kill your hard drive. the samsungs seem to be working great, and at $2.36 cheaper than the tdk's and verbatim's i will hope (knock on chrome) they continue to...

Ahem, instead of "would alway play in my E20," I meant to say, "would also play in my E20."
