Nice sleek unit, lots of usefull connections, very quiet fan, starts to record from off in less than 2 seconds! Use with sky digital in the UK, digibox can turn the unit on and off for recording from programs set in the personal planner, no need to set or use the timer! I have found the quality of the recordings very high on SP, go for the large HD one and get lots of space for series and films etc. Dubbing can be less than 10 mins for a 1:30 film when set to high speed, but if you want all the 16:9 signals, you need to use the standard speed settings. I have recorded months of stuff, used most days, NEVER had a problem.

Stay away from this model. I have had DMR-E80H for two years and love it. I had no problems with it at all so when my vcr died I bought the DMR-EH50. Everything was OK for the first three months then I noticed timer recording wasn't always taking place unless the power was on. Panasonic said the TV Guide Onscreen may be downloading a program guide and that was why it may not be recording correctly & I could either take it in for service or disable the TV Guide. I tried just manually setting the timer and that seemed to work for a few weeks, now the same problem again. In addition, the remote quit working two weeks ago. Panasonic said they would replace it but they're on backorder so now I have an almost usless unit. My remote from my old unit will access some of the features but I can't schedule any timer recordings. In addition, before I started having problems with this model, I had purchased one for a gift for my parents. They've had it less than 2 months, tried to play a DVD+R which it is supposed to be able to do. It locked up, the tray won't even open to get the disc out so now it's been taken in for repair. All in all, it's a lemon.

Didn't really work for me. My brother brought the recorder from the US, and I thought, at last i'll be able to transfer our home analog videos to dvd. Unfortunatly my VCR is a Sony, and the color doesn't transfer very well. I found out that a VCR from the same brand (panasonic) works perfectly. That is my only complaint.

Greetings,

There is not a lot of comments about that DVDR, so I'll write my 2 cents.

There is some confusion about the formats:
- It can read +-R, +-RW,Video DVD
- It can write +-R,-RW, Video DVD. NOT +RW
- It can copy from the HD to DVD only on a Video DVD

The IR blaster does not work with Direct TV boxes.

The integrated TV Guide has some bugs and does not work with Direct TV.

But those limitations count only for the removal of 1/2 point.

The remote control is nice, but the learning curve how to use it with programming and editing is a little bit stiff. There are blue, green, S, menu and other buttons that go directly to "menus". I would have liked to have only one menu accessable with the menu button with sub-menus. Slower to access, indeed, but easier learning curve. Some users may have issues with the current way it is done. That counts for the other 1removal of /2 point.

For the remaining, that machine is quite good: Nice compression, nice connectors options in the back (However, no HDMI connector) that makes it quite versatile. The DVD reader does a very nice job. It is fast to read and handle quite well the DVDs with errors.

Many reviewers on other sites said the manual is poorly written. I do not agree. It is quite east to find out the function you need to perform and the procedure is written simply.

I do recommend that DVDR.

Thank you

Excellent machine...can burn a 2hour movie from the Hard Drive to a +/- R Disc in less than 6 min, plus an additional 3.5 min formatting the completed disc (10 min overall burn time using x8 speed media...much faster than computer burn time using DVD X-Copy or DVD Shrink). The 100GB hard drive makes archiving (temp storage) of multiple movies/sequels very convenient.

Use a "vidtrackusa" or "Sigma" video enhancer for backing up your copy protected DVD collection. It is great to see that Panasonic finally added the (+ R) format to their DVD recorders.

I'm overall pleased with this unit. It has great menus and facilities for recording on the HD and to DVD. It is also very quiet. The three major things I'm not pleased with are the following:
1. It cannot play SVCD (!!!).
2. It cannot play or record dual layer DVD+/-R.
3. It cannot read neither JPEG's nor MP3's from a DVD-R/RW only from CD-R/RW.

Comments:
Willing to update the existing HD to a larger one, simply forget it.

Consider the following before you even try:

1. The firmware of the unit is not design to recognize Hard Drives larger that the one installed.
2. The power supply of the unit is also not designed to handle hard drives, which would draw higher currents on 12V and 5V than the ones specified.
3. The HD that comes with the unit is usually Maxtor standard size but slimmer, or let say low profile and also low current draw (something like this: 12V/0.6A and 5V/0.56A). To find such a HD is difficult indeed and even if you find one, let say 200MBt, or 160MBt the unit will write up to 100MBt for DMR-EH50 or up to 120MBt for DMR-E85H and then will stop as the rest of the HD does not exist.
4. And if you are still unconvinced, consider this: you can easily damage your unit trying to install a HD that draws more current than the specified. The first signs of something going wrong are typical bakelite smell as of something in the process of heating up or burning. Ups, do not panic, the power supply is handled to withstand this excess of high current for some given time, but not for long, believe me.

P.S.

DMR-EH50 is significantly faster than DMR-E85H in navigation commands execution. It just flies. Fast Record start is 1.5 seconds. Wake up on turn on is also almost immediate.

And by the way if you are not planning to use the TV Guide, turn it off, and you will never have any unexpected overnight hung ups.
