| Would not support a Maxell DVD-R burnt on my computer with a Sony DVD RW DW-R14A and using Ulead Studio 8. Worked with Memorex DVD-R just fine. The Maxell DVDs play on Playstation 2 and other DVD players. |

After posting NDH160 comments, thought that I should put up my findings about DMR-E85H.
Since switching to using the Laser brand DVDs, even the 8x speed rated ones, and have even tried the newer 16x ones, since the recorder IS only rated for 4x discs, have not had a single system check (touch wood) occur. The only time I did have was from using a batch of discs, more than 8 months ago now, that may have been a bit thinner, as I could see my hand through them. Laser brand DVDs available at JBs stores for about $30/$32 for 50s.
The other thing is that every so often, it may be an idea to record to disc what you want to save and to format the Hard Drive.
As I said, since starting to do these two things, I have yet to have a "System Check" message.
ps; only given a 9 as I would like to have more capacity, and that I have read in T3 at one time that there was a combined VCR/DVD/HDD unit actually made by one of the electronics firms, but have not seen it come to market. |

Been using it for over 2 yrs now, now & again the odd problems popped up, like it would stop recording after a minute or so sometimes, or it wouldnt quick dub to disc, so u have to go the long way round to get it to copy onto dvd.
Now however its going to self check every time its switched on, it can take 15 mins before it sorts itself out, but if i let it go t osleep mode or put a dvd in it, it can take 30 mins or sometimes i have to pull the plug & start again, so these things arnt fully sorted yet on the programming front.
picture quality though on short play on my 42" plasma is excellent, long play is too grainy on it, but ok on a 28" crt.
Overall after a lot of use its been ok, a lot better to use than a vcr, im not convinced that its the best out there though, i was originally hooked on the timeslip function its great, but i still think its not fully sorted & will be taking it to the service centre to get it fixed shortly. |

| I wanted to record onto DVD-RAM and take the DVD's back with me to where I work and play them on my laptop, but the recordings will only play on the DMR-E85H. The ram discs won't play on any of my computers.I had hoped to watch what I recorded then wipe the disc and re-record when I get home again but they will only play at home. |

good set. about 3 months back it started doing system checks in a loop. i called the local office and the technician came by and changed an ic on it. when asked what caused the looping 'system checks' he said the ic either (a) over-heated or (b) short-circuited because of a power surge or (c) combination of both. well, i had a power trip a month before that (lightning) and it was probably all of the above.
some discs i try playing don't work -- it says UNSUPPORTED. does anybody know how i can fix this? |

this dvd recorder is great. i'm able to record onto the hdd of a program i'm watchin AND play a dvd movie at the same time without affecting the recording. i can transfer vhs tapes to the hdd for editing, like taking out commercials, adding chapters, naming the title, if on the vhs tape theres like 5 eps, just record them all without stopping and u can split the eps one by one on the recorder, u can also add a thumbnail picture preview. one person on this comment sectino says editing out the commercials has major video audio problems...well maybe they were doing it on a dvd-ram disc but doing it on the hdd of this recorder doesn't affect audio or video, but u do have to time it right, like not directly editin out after the screen goes black then the commercials start, u have to like skip a few frames after the black out into the commercial beginning to not cut out the last 2 seconds of the audio, but thats not a real issue.
u can dub in high speed from the hdd to a dvd-ram/dvd-r discc, as well as dub in high speed from dvd-ram to the hdd, but u can't dub in high speed from a dvd-r to the hdd, what u can do is dub a dvd-r to hdd in sp mode, which means watching the entire dvd-r over again and gettin it recorded onto the hdd. the one thing that sucks is that when u hook up the recorder to ur cable box it always scans by itself lookin for more channels. this sucks cause if u wanna watch the show ur recordin onto the hdd the recorder changes the channel every 30 seconds or so, and the manual itself says it does this to get more channel info, and well it doesn't say when its supposed to stop, i left it like that for a month and it didn't stop so i never let my dvdrecorder downnload the cable settings so it never scans but then now u can't program the recorder to record ur show via the cable tvguide, but no worries u can still set up the dvdrecorder urself to record at specific times but u gotta remember to leave on the cable box on the right channel. but other then that, this recorder works great. not a problem really. |

Willing to update the existing HD to a larger one, simply forget it.
Consider the following before you even try:
1. The firmware of the unit is not design to recognize Hard Drives larger that the one installed.
2. The power supply of the unit is also not designed to handle hard drives, which would draw higher currents on 12V and 5V than the ones specified.
3. The HD that comes with the unit is usually Maxtor standard size but slimmer, or let say low profile and also low current draw (something like this: 12V/0.6A and 5V/0.56A). To find such a HD is difficult indeed and even if you find one, let say 200MBt, or 160MBt the unit will write up to 100MBt for DMR-EH50 or up to 120MBt for DMR-E85H and then will stop as the rest of the HD does not exist.
4. And if you are still unconvinced, consider this: you can easily damage your unit trying to install a HD that draws more current than the specified. The first signs of something going wrong are typical bakelite smell as of something in the process of heating up or burning. Ups, do not panic, the power supply is handled to withstand this excess of high current for some given time, but not for long, believe me.
P.S.
DMR-EH50 is significantly faster than DMR-E85H in navigation commands execution. It just flies. Fast Record start is 1.5 seconds. Wake up on turn on is also almost immediate.
And by the way if you are not planning to use the TV Guide, turn it off, and you will never have any unexpected overnight hung ups.

Very impressed so far and it has had a lot of use. I keep a couple of the cartridge style DVD-RAM disks for general recording and some tray ones for transfer to the PC.
It took me a while to learn the following:
1. Don't ever dub more than one recording to a disk as they are combined in a single VRO file that causes errors in every bit of software I've tried at the pojn t they are joined.
2. Don't ever edit the file on the recorder (even to remove ads) as this causes major sync errors between the video and audio - when I say major I mean like the entire duration of an ad break.
3. Always format the RAM disks before dubbing as VRO files are just appended.
When all those points are remembered the transfer of files is simple and adds only five minutes to the edit and burn process. The raw VRO file can be renamed as an MPEG file as that's what it is anyway and most production software can handle it fine.
Issues: I consider the frame rate used in SP mode to be a little on the high side as is the resolution but that's a minor gripe.
Overall highly recommended.

| I bought mine at Best Buy for $250. It was a open-box display model they were getting rid of but I took the chance since it has a 30 day return warranty still. It came with all the parts and I don't regret buying it. The instructions are a little hard to understand but once you figure it out it is awesome. I love the editing although it would be even better if you could make a chapter menu for each disc. I have Directv so the TV guide recording is useless but you only have to take 1 more step to set up timed recording with Directv's channel reminder. I have saved hundreds of dollars recording movies and tv shows on HBO and other channels where DVD's for those shows don't even exist yet. I highly recommend but I think $500 is too much. They should list it for like $350. If anyone learns any new tricks on it let me know and I'll do the same or if anyone needs help. |

| One thing i'd like to the forst post in regards to the firmware. I had a problem w/ the TV Guide function. It went into a mode where I couldn't access the guide or do any timer program. My fix was to unplug it but it would only last for a few hours. I did the update & all seems ok now. |

Extremely pleased with this purchase.
I've been looking at DVD Recorders with HDD for around a year now and the Panny looked like a nice unit - except that Future Shop here in Canada was charging CDN$900 for it. Picked it up Feb. 24 at the Circuit City in Williston VT for US$400 + VT sales tax (payed GST/PST at border). Saved myself roughly CDN$450.
Superb image quality on recordings in both XP and SP modes. FR (for 2.5-3h test) works pretty well - only very minor artifacting around text (opening credits) if you really look for it. LP is alright for your not-so-important recordings (say, news/talk); EP is pretty awful all around, as it is on any DVD Recorder.
What's nice is that with the 120Gb HDD providing 54 hours of SP recording time, and no discernable difference between XP and SP for my Sat-TV recording, I've got plenty of room to stay away from the lower resolution recording settings.
Note that this unit does NOT support DVD-RW (or +RW for that matter) so you will need to purchase DVD-RAM if you want to archive something temporarily off the HDD. A big problem without the hard disk, a trivial concern with.
High-speed dubbing works very well, 12-15 minutes for a 2 hour SP recording to burn to DVD-R from the HDD.
Editing features work well and are easy to use.
Negative points:
-Lack of DVD-RW support, as noted above. Minor.
-Unable to create top menus for burned DVD-Rs that show chapters, will only show titles. Can divide title to be burned into multiple titles, but this might hamper high-speed dubbing and takes longer.
-TV Guide does not work with Sat, so timer recordings require one setting on Panny, one on Sat Receiver. This is so minor - it takes me 30 seconds to set up any recording, and I had to do the same on my VCR (and would have to on pretty much any other system). Just wish the IR Blaster was more cross-compatible and not dependent on the TV Guide.
Highly Recommended.
NOTE: I updated the firmware using the download here: http://www.dxcc.com/dmr-e85h.htm - went from 840 to 970, DVD Burner firmware went from J117 to J131. Did this to avoid any U99 issue while dividing. The file burned to CD-R in seconds, popped disc into DVD-Recorder; let it go through the update by itself, took maybe 15 minutes tops.

I am copying over my review that I post to Future Shop (it is negative so we will see if they actually post it)First my ammendment, then you can read my original glowing remarks on the recorder.
While I stand behind what I said on the features, I wouldn't throw your VCR out just yet. This little puppy didn't even make it 2 months before dieing on me. Has frozen up 4 times when putting store bought DVD's in it (Only way to free up is to unplug the power, 3 freezes in the last weekend alone), and 4 times now it thinks it's recording the shows, only to have no show in the end. These were time recording programs, I notice the record indicator was not on, when I tried to do stuff to the hard drive to see what was happening, it told me a recording was in progress, but no show on the old HD. Unfortunately it waited till the 6th week to act up, so it's in the shop for repairs. I was told past 4 weeks, tough luck on the exchange. And they can't tell me how long it will be down for. Given this does not happen every time, will see how they go about fixing it. When I tried, I could not recreate the problem. With this kind of quality I recommend you look at other brands. This is my first and most likely last Panasonic purchase. Because this machine could not even last 2 months I would not recommend anyone to buy it. Maybe this is just a one off, but if you were my friend and asked if you should buy, I would say given my experience I would not.
Original Review - after 3 weeks owning (oh how quickly things have changed)
I picked the unit up on Boxing Day, and have been playing with it for the last couple of weeks. The recorder has lots of great features including Chase play and time slip. I love the fact you can watch one show while another is recording. As we have two kids under 2 years of age, we often have to record, and watch the shows later on. I also like that there is no limit to the amount of timer recording you can set up, that always bothered me that VHS limit you from 6-10 recordings.
The recorded quality is good on SP or XP, but anything lower is not worth it. But with the 120Gig HD, SP is more then enough, giving over 54 hours of recording time.
The editing features are nice to cut out unwanted parts of the recording, and it easily transfers from HD to DVD. I also have my VHS and Laser disc hooked up to transfer those formats to DVD, so far it is working out wonderfully.
The TV guide is a good feature, but disappointing in its channel lineup. I have Shaw digital cable and many of the channels are not on the guide, including the Movie Central channels and the time shift channels from the east coast. The book says that they only carry the popular channels, which is a shame. So I continue to use the Shaw guide. So you Satellite users don't have to be the only ones disappointed. Also you have to be carefull when you use the guide to set recording. I set a few up this way, and as it downloads new info it sometimes erases existing data, while the recording was still listed, the show was in the not in the guide (the time slot show no info), so the show did not tape. |

I have been using my DMR-E85H for the past two weeks and have found it to be a huge step forward from my old trusty Sony VCR. It has no problems playing titles I burn on my computer (Plextor PX-712A on Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD-R media) and other DVD players have no issues with whatever I burn on the E85H using the same Taiyo Yuden media.
The high speed dubbing and finalizing work fine, even with titles where I have made numerous edits. As others have stated, XP and SP are really the only useful recording modes. The SP mode appears to not present any degradation over normal broadcast quality. I do a lot of sport event recordings and the degradation on VHS was fairly distracting, this is not a problem with the E85H. XP recordings are as clean as the source you present it with, but I rarely use it for off the air
recordings as it just isn't necessary for my purposes.
The video editor is simple and works extremely well when chopping out unwanted stuff (ahem, commercials, cough, cough) which it accomplishes seamlessly and easily.
I am using the E85H to transfer all my old 8mm tapes of my kids to DVD and it handles this perfectly. You pretty much set up the dump to the E85H hard drive and come back later and it is there. Then edit as you wish, dub it and finalize it to DVD. The remote is fairly intuitivie and the Navigator function makes it very easy to get around. It really isn't necessary to get too deep into the manual initially.
Timer recorder functions are easy to work with for TV recording and they function reliably. In my location, the TVGuide Program feature has been very slow to update. I have not yet received a full 8 days of programming, but it has now built itself out to 5 days, so it appears to be making progress. The past 3 nights I have simply left the tuner set to the local PBS channel before turning it off and it has slurped up programming each night. Before I did that it seemed to miss data on some days, which makes me think that it was spending a lot of time seeking the PBS channel or was confused because we have 3 of them here and may have landed on one that is somewhat dysfunctional. In any event, the program guide is awesome for finding stuff, sorting stuff, and simple one button recording setup. I would give this recorder very high marks, but not a perfect score due to the sluggish nature of the TVGuide programming. I really am not sure if that is an E85H problem, or a PBS problem, or a cable problem, or a TVGuide problem, so it may be unfair to hammer it too hard for that.
Regards,
Ender |

The comment about the E85H unable to play DVD-R discs burned on other systems is NOT TRUE for me.
I've been able to use DVD-R discs that I've burned on my computer (using both Sony, Maxell, and Fuji media) and dub it to the hard drive on the recorder for further playback or dubbing.
I really enjoy the E85 but I have a love hate feeling about the TV Guide. I love how easy it is to program it to record a show. But I hate how my area doesn't have information about all available channels. While you can delete channels from the listings, the E85H WON'T allow you to ADD channels that don't have TV Guide info. So if I try to channel surf by using the + and - buttons, it will skip channels that aren't listed. I suppose that's the fault of my cable provider but what would be much better would be the ability just to add a channel and have it show without listings--just like the way TV tuners let you add and delete channels. |

This unit won't play copies made on my Sony computer which has a pioneer DVD burner. They play back fine on my computer. I tried the copies at circiut-city, and they worked fine on the Sony player. It looks like panasonic will only play back DVD-R that made on a panasonic, and not from any other brand burner.
This may be a real nice recorder for TV shows, but it doesn't do what I need, the ability to play back the copies of my videos.
Circuit City had several E85H's on their open box returned table.... looks like they are going to get one more. |

Note:
MP3 long filename and Folders on OSD, not in Display
why not 10 points:
- display isn't matrix
- if leave menue or stop playing, the TV go
back to TV-channel, don't stay on AV-channel
- tray must open/close with button at the device,
no remote open/close (but I must go to the rack
to change the DVD also :-))
handling HDD/DVD ist very good, quality super,
easy menue, use RAM to transfer video from
Recorder to PC for editing
that's all today - have fun |

| Have had this unit about 6 months now. It's absolutely fantastic and has transformed the way I watch TV. It isn't perfect though so I'm giving it top marks. Firstly recording anything at a lower quality that SP is a waste of time. LP is worse quality than LP on a VCR and EP is unwatchable. Secondly, a couple times when Ive recorded stuff the recording appears to get some sort of interference, a bit like if the TVs not tuned in properly. Finally, on a lot of recordings the audio goes off for a millisecond every 10 to 15 mins, it doesn't sound much but it's annoying and noticeable. |

I also have the DMR-E85H recorder and I can't get it to record a 1 hr XP Recording to the DVD-RAM disk. It records it to the Hard Disk instead even though I tell it to go the the DVD??
Also if I set up a SP (2hr) record to the DVD-RAM the same thing happens....it gets recorded to the Hard Disk? When I check the properties of both the recordings they say 61 and 121 minutes also.
Panasonic what is going on here? I am very dissapointed!

My Panasonic DMR-E85H has a problem when recording timed shows. For some reason the engineers screwed up the firmware and added 1 minute to every recording. If a show is supposed to record from 8:00 to 9:00 PM the unit doesn't stop recording till 9:01! If I set it for a one minute recording it records for two minutes!!! This is unacceptable and Panasonic must fix this! I will return mine every month until I get a unit that works correctly! My unit was manufactured in MARCH 2004.
Panasonic so far has avoided answering me as far as why the unit does this. They even suggest it may be just my unit! Not so I had two so far and the one at their customer help line also did the same thing.
The unit otherwise is great for doing most things. Great picture and audio. Just take away the extra minute!
