Worked great for the first year. Now it won't recognize blanks. I've tried brand after brand. I still have one spindle of sony 8x dvd-r's that always work fine. (only a couple left), but when I bought more of the exact same sony's, none of them work. Tried Taiyo-Yuiden, Philips, Sony, Prodisc, nothing is working now.
I did the firmware upgrade btw. It was successful, but no help.
Guess I'll try some ritek's before I give up completely.
Why does it keep working with this one spindle of Sony's?? Aarrgh...

so far so good worth every penny and more than that the quality at xp and sp is excellent and fr upto
2hr 45mins is good it pays to use good quality dvd-r + dvd-ram disks ( you get what you pay for as with many things in life ) my first dvdr a liteon (i called it someting that sounds like it) i had that for 3 days then i went back to argos its best use was as a dust colector i think it was the only thing it can do
properly lol
i find editing is better on a pc as long as you have a pc 2ghz or above and a dvd-ram compatable drive a bit of software windows xp,tmpgenc dvd author and nero burning rom you can import edit out advets ect... and author a exelent quality dvd's

I got this heep of scrap free with a Panasonic 36" Quintrix w/s TV,and I must say It's truly a waste of components. No wonder they're giving them away.
It plays the bare minimum of formats. And the recording...Well, its fine if you want to play it back on the e55. But you try and put the said disc into your PC's dvd-ram drive! It cant play it properly!(and thats any recording rate xp/sp etc)
The picture is grainy as hell, and not to mention jerky. I took this piece of crap to the car boot and off loaded it for £150.00 to some poor soul, then went straight home and plugged in my trusty SCAN 440LSI.As for recording, bought a TV card off a well known auction site and connected it to the tv. Excellent quality recording, full editing(not the immitation editing that panasonic use)then burn to ANY disc.Which I then go and place it in the scan 440lsi KNOWING IT WILL PLAY!

MORAL: Dont bother - It's sh1t!

I have had this product for a bit over a year, and have had no problems wth either playback or recording. The only drawback it is only limited to writing to DVD-Ram and DVD-R disc. The ability to write and edit to a RW disc would have been a better feature than DVD-ram. Overall a very dependable product to date

I have the black DMR-E55K and it works great. Found out that the flexible recording has the same bit rate as the SP 2hr mode up to 3 hrs, then drops off.

Picture quality is excellent in SP and FR. Don't both with 4hr or more mode - too grainy.

I have used Panasonic discs made by Matsushita/Panasonic and TY from 1x and 4x and work perfectly. Maxell 4x and 8x made by Maxell, also JVC Victor 4x made by Maxell work perfectly. Panasonic DVD-RAM 3x work perfect too. All around great recorder. Remote is a little busy and it takes awhile to start up, but other than that, works great. Well made.

Bought this just over a year ago, its my first DVD rec so I have nothing to compare it with.
However I am very happy with the ease of use and quality of the picture,(just a shame about the limited format compatability).
Anyway two important points to make about this model...

1...there is a feature called "Forced Eject"which enables the user to eject a bad disc , if the machine won`t give it up, here`s what you do.......Press and hold "STOP" & "CHANNEL UP" at the same time (on the machine),this overrides everything else & forces the machine to give you back the disc.

2....This machine does not like cheap discs !.
Use the cheapest discs at your peril, I was building a fine collection of coasters until I was, given the "heads up" by the guy in Richer Sounds ( where I bought it), who has the same machine.
Switched discs and now everything is rosy again.
Dont use Hi-Space discs!

The Panasonic DMR-E55 was my first DVD recorder ever, after decades of using VHS (and for many years Beta) videotape since 1978. The old man here is trying to get up to date with some new toys! :-)
I got it 1 Oct 2005 at a local Best Buy as a store demo unit, no box or manual or remote, for below $130US. Download the manual from Panasonic, order their exact replacement remote for $30, and who needs the box? Still carries the full warranty. Look around, maybe a similar display unit is on blowout sale near you.
The XP 1-hour and SP 2-hour modes record very well off-the-air, and the LP 4-hour mode works great on longer programs that don't have a lot of glitzy psychadelic flash-and-dazzle effects such as music videos (too much data to accurately compress). Haven't tried 6-hour mode yet. For live over-the-air broadcasts with no "ghosts" in the image, it equals or beats any VHS or Beta recorder I've tried.
Line input on the S-video jacks seems to be a bit washed-out and not quite as "snappy" on the picture, but maybe I did something wrong there.
The pleasant big surprise was recording older VHS tapes to DVD-R. I got this recorder partly to archive some great old tapes, including family videos, going on 15-25 years old (yes back to 1979), which were recorded at SP speed on mostly extra-high-grade tape on excellent VCRs. Copying these from a good VCR with the Panasonic DVD-R video noise reduction set to "ON" produced amazingly good copies. Apparently the digital recording compression process removes nearly all the speckles and sand-grain effects from VHS frames so that the resulting DVD-R copy has a much cleaner, crisper and more "solid" look to it. The "pause" button on the copy shows that the video noise is essentially removed from the DVD frames, whereas it still shows in "pause" on the original tapes. It can't add more resolution than the original VHS res of about 240 horizontal lines, but the DVD-R copy does look much better when viewing. So, now that VHS seems to be going the way of the LP vinyl record, this is how to preserve your favorite VHS tapes, especially given the low price of blank DVD-R discs with careful shopping. The Memorex 16x blanks work just fine on this unit.
The editing to make pretty title menus and thumbnails is a bit tedious but it's do-able, and little practice ought to make it go quicker.
This recorder flawlessly played the 12 or so rental DVDs I've tried, but it failed to play any home-burned DVD+R DL dual-layer discs (Verbatim 2.4x) which played fine on the PC and on another-brand DVD player. I don't know about DVD+R single-layer discs because I've not had occasion to try any yet.
Overall it's a very good product which seems to be able to do everything the somewhat-awkward manual says it can do. :-)

Everything works as advertised, but I am not happy about the colour reproduction. The colour depth is poor at best- and I don't see a way to improve it. No matter which recording speed is used, there seem to be too few colours available from the spectrum of colours. For example, looking at a face of a person, with the front being lighted, and the light gradually fading off towards the side of the face/cheeks, I see several colour "steps" instead of a smooth colour transition from bright to dark. This is not noticable on the original source materical, but appears on all materials recorded using this unit. Therefore, archived DVD's look very sharp and clear, but this colour limitation bothers me. I don't know if this is typical for all DVD Recorder brands/makes. Aside from this, I am totally content.

I bought my Panasonic 55 from Argos - might have been a bit pricier but I felt I had to have somewhere reliable to return it if things went wrong. So far they have not.

If I sound over-cautious this is because of a bad experience with the previous DVD-Rec which I bought from Novatech, it was a Liteon. It seemed great value and I liked its CD/VCD capability which the 55 lacks boo hoo. I had to send it back because it failed to write after about 6 weeks - we reckon the red laser failed. So I had to pay to post it back to Liteon in Holland (argh!). Waited ages to get it back and then it was stolen in transit so after some pain I got a full refund.

Anyway, back to the Panasonic. I have found this to be a superb machine in most of the advertised respects. But to restore balance I would like to comment on its failings. IMHO there are shortcomings - like it will not play Region 1 DVDs. I need a hack.

Second has more to do with the way it works with my Sony TV and Sky + Digibox. I have been working on it using Scarts and RCA's instead of pure Scart to avoid the control wire so I expect to get there eventually.

The only 'coasters' I have made so far were those which were done in the early days. I checked it was OK then switched off the TV - this unbeknonst to me had the effect os shutting off the signal to the E55. So it recorded but the prog was missing.

Overall I rate the machine very highly. I can't wait to play the RAM disks in my new multi-format LG DVD recorder in the PC.

I just thought I would add a few points now that I’ve owned this panny for over a week now. I have burned several programs and movies from TV on both formats DVD-Ram and DVD-R, No problems and I have transferred movies from VHS with excellent results (although obviously picture quality is only as good as the recording from tapes). Curiously, the quick timer record function is not carried to the remote. If you want to operate this function, 30mins 60mins 90mins etc, you must do so by the record button on the machine. Why not by the remote as well ??? and there is no eject button on the remote, which is not so much an inconvenience, just another minor oversight by Panasonic. Compared to the Panasonic VHS recorder which this new DVD recorder replaces, well, there is no comparison, the VHS recorder cost me £479.95 six years ago and that didn’t have a quick timer at all and index search was a hit or miss affair and picture quality was worse than many recorders costing half the price. Panasonic make nice TV’s but their recorders were really c***. I hope their DVD recorders will now correct this imbalance. So far, I think it has.

This is my first DVD recorder, just bought it today and for a cracking price of £169.95 at ‘Richer Sounds’ Newcastle. That’s a whopping £80 less than Argos, they are selling it at £50 off at £249.99. My machine is only region 2, but as I’m only going to use it to record and use my multi-region player to play dvd’s, what more do you need. Setting up was straight forward and I was ready to test in about 20 minutes. It wouldn’t have taken so long but I have a free view box and a video recorder connected up as well so I can copy some video tapes over to dvd’s. Auto tuning was fast and smooth and first recording using Panasonic dvd-ram disk was quick and easy. I used 2 hour mode for the test and it was impossible to tell the difference from broadcast TV (pioneer digital free view) at the time off writing I have only been playing with it for a few hours, so I’m still learning about its functions. My first impression of this recorder, is that it’s a superb machine and at this price, you would be mad not buy one.

Suits my personal and professional needs. I've been using it to record from VHS and miniDV (for personal use) and from Betacam & DVcam. I also record directly from my computer's editing suit, using the s-video input. The quality is quite good at XP and SP. The only thing missing would be a component or DV (firewire) input, which would make the recording quality excellent. I do not regret my purchase.

I have a ton of SVCDs in my library. Reports here said they would work, but once I got the player home, I found that they didn't. So, I immediately took it back.

When playing a SVCD, they would play for 1/4 second, then pause for 1 second. Then it would play for another 1/4 second, and then pause again for a second. It was unwatchable. I was using a very modest 1800kb/s for most of the disks. I tried a variety of different bitrates, and couldn't find anything that worked.

Used every day for at least 4 hours (my wife records cable programs for her mother, who cannot have cable) - 100% record on 10 DVDRAM discs used over and over!
I use it for recording special programs from Satellite - transfer to my computer from DVDRAM with my LG 4160 DVD writer - brilliant quality on SP setting.

Records to DVD-R fine.

Can't fault it - brilliant piece of kit!

I love it! I've copied about 30 of my VHS movies to DVD-R . (I have about 60-70% success rate copying commercial tapes.) I love the picture quality in 2-hour mode, which is all I use, except when the movie is over 2 hours, then I use the flex-record mode. This thing works great. It IS necessary to use the manual at first, but once you get used to it, it's easy. The onscreen menues are a big help. I've used only Memorex 8x DVD-R in bulk and Panasonic DVD-RAM. No coasters ever so far, and the DVD-Rs are about 40 cents apiece. (RAMs are $20 for 5.)

This is the first DVD recorder that I purchased. I understand that the specs say that it will not play dvd+r disks, but this is not correct. I have some other videos on +r format and it plays them fine. Set-up is very easy. On-screen menu's tell you everything that you need to do. I like how well editing works when you have recorded on a DVD-ram disk. Takes care of all commercials and unwanted material out. I did quite abit of research prior to purchasing this player. Alot of the cheaper versions required firmware updates, had minor problems in different areas. Reading all of the reviews on the panasonic, everyone had good words about it. The manual is not the greatest, that's the worse thing that I can find. It does come with a tutorial DVD that show you on screen how to do alot of the functions. It makes the player very user-friendly. You will just have to have patience with this unit and realize that there is a learning curve with it. You will not be sorry that you bought this recorder. Definately get DVD-ram disks. They are awesome. Much better than DVD-RW, which I have used in my computer. It records best in XP (1hr Mode) - ep (8hr mode), looks like a vcr tape. Spend the extra money and go with a brand you can trust. It costs more, but you get alot more and less headaches than a cheaper no name brand.

Comments:
Easy to use and set up, recording from internal analogue tuner or goodmans GDB 3 digibox. Good using Ram discs for recording and watching simultaneously. Quality on high & standard setting is excellent, slightly blocky on extended record but still watchable(4 hour).
Ritek 9.4G cartridge RAM (£3.49 bigpockets.co.uk)
Ritek G04's and Verbatim X4's DVD-R's all work fine.
Reads -RW & +RW's that I've tried as well (not record).

Comments:
This is the first DVD recorder that I have used other that the ones in my computer and I must say it is very easy to use.

Set-up is very easy and the instruction are quite clear for use.

Was disappointed that recording onto DVD-RW was not possible but other than that I cant complain. I have only used Datawrite Yellow 4x disks yet but they work perfectly in it and I have found the quality is perfect even when set up to record 4 hours onto a disk.
