It supports DVD-R DL, but only playback. It cant record on them itself. Suggest you use the ones from Verbatim, they work perfectly with mine.
The reason why i chose no when iy comes to DVD-RW is because it is acting a bit strange when it comes to them. First it sees them, it can also format them to fit the recorder, but if you take out the disk and tries to get the recorder to read the disk again, it fails, and that with disks from Verbatim. |

I have come close to tossing this thing out a window ! I'd say 20% of recordings don't work - the recorder simply stops. These are with both name brand and discount discs lifted by the edges off of the spindle or out of the case. Just tonight I discovered two discs it refuses to finalize.
While the variable rate recording is great for copying VCR tapes, don't use it to record "live" unless you have a VCR or PVR also recording as back-up. |

This DVD Recorder is awsome. It can reads every kind of DVD-R and DVD-RAM that I put inside without complaining. It plays the movies I record on my PC although I verified some reproduction problems while playing NTSC DVD's authored in my PC. I tlooks like the image is playing at a slow frame rate and the sound looks weird too as it tries to stay synchronized with the image that's running slower than usual. But when I play the same DVD on my PC it looks fine. It's a weird thing though. If someone knows how to solve this I would like some help.

| In respond to the guy from Canada, who complain about freezing when recording on DVD-R, please read this. Never touch with bare fingers the recording side of the disk. Any spot of grease will cause the recorder to hang up on you. You can verify this by taking out the media and observe it. In 90% of the cases this is the issue. Second, never use cheap medias. It is not worth it the money. Some of them are almost transparent when you look at them against bright light. Wash your hands and do not blow air on the media before recoding. |

I have been using the Panasonic EMR-50 since June 2004 to dubb on DVD-Rs my huge collection of VHS tapes and Laserdiscs.
After to burn more than 50 DVD-Rs with the EMR-50, I concluded that:
1) This is a great and reliable video recorder!
2) Of course, during the learning curve, I lost some medias but it was my fault. After a careful Manual reading I never lost any media anymore using this recorder.
3) What really surprized me is the EMR-50 capability to use different media brands. I have done excellent recordings using following DVD-Rs medias: Samsung 4x, Philips 4x/8X, Princo 4x, Ritek 4x and even some unbranded medias.
4) EMR-50 main features applies mainly to the DVD-RAM media type, which is very expensive (in Brazil) and very hard to find even on specialized media stores.
Summing it up: a very nice video recorder. |

Horrible product from Panasonic. Unit freezes on some media for no reason and has to be taken into the shop to remove the disc.
Panasonic refuses to issue any firmware updates for this product like other makers have done to resolve problems such as this.
This is a flaw with all models of Panasonic DVD Recorders and Panasonic appears not to care - they just expect you to buy the new model...until new media is released that locks the unit and the cycle starts all over again.
Even no name brands release updates. |

Had for 3 months, works per the Manual always, when using Panasonic RAM disks, and high quality (Sony, Panasonic, etc.) DVD-R media. It is inexpensive the way I use it. Mostly used as a Recorder, I've been using a cheap APEX as the Home Theater DVD player It gets 3-5X the usage of the E-50. Also use a JVC SVHS VCR in same system. It makes S-Video outputs from a VHS recording, a little plus.
Significant features of E-50 (for me) are:
Easy, reliable capture to very good MPEG2 (forget about PC solutions, have spent well over a $1000 and 5 years, still a hassle with a PC);
Time slip read while recording (go back in real time to review a Play), easily controlled by Remote,
VHS tape to DVD w/ built in TBC to fix those beat up tapes. ( unit recognizes Copy Protection, you have to solve it to back up those deteriorating old movies, it is a hassle, but, there are ways to make "Fair Use" back-up work for us consumers);
Variable record time within High Quality mode (ex. 2h15m)( Unit switches to a SVCD like resolution at extended record times, and automatically for poor quality incoming video within planned hi-quality capture. Still plays like standard DVD resolution. I noticed it when doing a still capture of a frame within Power DVD from a poor VHS source quality conversion to DVD movie);
Front Panel access for Camcorder, etc..
I use mostly RAM disk recording, take it to a PC with Iomega- Multi-Format Super DVD-Writer($100 after rebate from BestBuy) to read the recorded RAM disk, by using ULead Movie Factory 3, with which I do cuts edit (commercials, poor recordings, junk), and burn a clean DVD-R,or+R on 80 cent discs. I erase the RAM disk and reuse as needed, supposed to be good for 100K rewrites. Started with 5 RAM disks, as MPEG2 intermediates. Works great. Satellite OTA recording of an occasional keeper quality movies / shows, ends up with our Casablanca stuf. Easily recorded @hi-quality on 2 Ram Disks, a 3 hr movie w/commercials, removed the commercials, and linked the 2 edited captures, and burned at hi-quality to a single DVD+R disk using above method. Did a DVD Rescue of the tape of the final game of the Celtics-Houston NBA Championship that is now a dream w/o commercials to view and recall the greats of both teams. Slow step through a play is elegant now. Also working on old tapes of Weddings, Astronomical Observatory video VHS tapes conversion to DVD. Plan to capture some of the Olympics this summer
Every time I use the E-50, I learn more that is useful.
It helps to read, and re-read the Manual. Too bad Panasonic does not propagate its capabilities with application details. The ability to Read RAM format and Convert to standard recordable format and Cuts Edit using Ulead Movie Factory 3, I discovered before E-50 purchase, through an on-line obscure Panasonic Press Release. Although advised of how well it works, Panasonic will not openly support the detail of how it works systematically with Ulead. Most folks do not understand how to make a RAM disk approach work, so they bypass a great product in the E-50, and its brothers. Go figure the Panasonic support ? I saw an E-60 sitting at Best Buy for 2 months at a very, very low price, because people could not see how to use RAM discs.
Also RAM disk availability seems poor, but, They are easily purchased from Panasonic at good prices, and deals are supported from Panasonic. Got 10 at a great buy, less than COMPUSA DVD-/+R
Additionally, Power DVD (PC) Player easily plays RAM disks with recorded movies.
DVD-R burns are successful when the Pilot pays attention to what he is doing, uses good media and has properly interpreted the manual. Failures are always cockpit error. Since, I cannot chew gum and walk straight, I rather use RAM disk to record, it is very forgiving, and much cheaper.
Football season will be more enjoyable when I watch the game in time slip record mode. Play review when I wish will be fun , and I get to keep those games which are really great, like the last Super Bowl. It will be SVCD quality, at a 3-4 hour record setup, but, I'll have it, and it will cuts edit to less than a 2 hour single DVD+/-R.

I bought this DVD Writer as I believe DVD-RAM to be the best choice voor day to da use. Its a pity the DMR-E50 cannot write to DVD-RW disks.
I found recordings longer than 2 hours to be very poor.
Timed recording from my satellite receiver was touch and go, more often than not an error occured and nothing was recorded or the recording was interrupted part way through. I took the recorder back to the shop. It was sent off to be repaired.
When I got it back I first tried some DVD RAM disks. I had problems with the DVD RAM disks of brands other than panasonic, the machine managed to destoy 2 expensivwe double sided RAM disks.
Needless to say I didn't waste any DVD-R disks to see if Panasonic had actually fixed that problem.
I have now taken the recorder back and although almost all my equipment is Panasonic & Technics, I have now bought a JVC DVD RAM/-R/-RW recorder. |

It records werry well on Verbatim DataLifePlus and Intenso media, it also have a good playback support for them too, even if the media was burned on your PC DVD burner.
When it comes to RAM media, both Verbatim and Fujifilm Type2 works great.
When using Flex-Recording you can actually record Macrovision protected VHS on it without enny problems (tested with VHS-PAL).
My recorder is region-free made with a special Panasonic remote that the store has. |

Bad support for DVDs. It only supports DVD-R and DVD-RAM for recording. It can't even play DVD+R.
The best is DVD-RAM, thats the reason for the buy.
It can't play SVCD only some VCDs. It doesn't support that many different formats.
Its excellent on DVD-RAM and only on that.
I bought it region-free, at a Panasonics Center, where they used a special remote controller from PANASONIC, they could have made that ready on the remote that came with the recorder.
It does NOT have progresive Scanning as some says in here, read your manual and their site.
All in all an okey recorder, but they still have a long way to go, maybe with the new Blue-ray laser.

| I purchased my DMR-E50 at an Army PX for $129 (new unit on clearance because box had been cut open). I was planning to buy one with a hard drive later, but at that price I couldn't pass up the E50. I have been very pleased with its performance. No coasters so far with Memorex media. So far all DVD's play in my Apex AD-660 (with region free/macrovision free firmware). My X-Box plays everything except recordings in XP (1hr). The Flexible Recording Mode is the best feature of this unit. You don't have to sacrifice quality just to get the last few minutes of a program. The manual is poorly organized and the remote is a little awkward, but otherwise this outstanding recorder would rate a 10. |

HOW TO UN-JAM THE DISC TRAY! Learned this trick on eBay:
1. Shut it down, even if you have to pull the plug
2. Restart
3. When restart is over, press and hold OFF for as long as it takes to shut off (can be 30 sec. or longer)
4. Press and hold OPEN for as long as it takes (can be 1 min. or longer!) till the tray opens
Works for me! Good luck! |

Excellent recorder. Great connections and able to copy VHS to DVD-R or DVDRAM, perfect.
DVDRam is a great media, but it should have been able to use DVD+R also, well, you can't have it all.
Got it region free at the shop, they used a special remote controller to connect to it and then they entered a code and vupti, it works.
One bad thing, IT CAN'T PLAY SVCD ;-( only VCD. |

I had an initial bad experience with media being unrecognized. I switched to Ritek G04s and have had great success since then. Two things make this the recorder of choice for video duping: the TBC system and the variable bitrate. It allows you to maximize the quality by setting the precise recording time rather than switching to 4 hour mode just to get the last 10 minutes of a 130 minute film.
Quality of the DVD is great. Ease of use is appreciated, and Panasonic brhind the machine makes it a better choice than some cheaper machines. Just don't try to figure out what to do with the DVD-RAM feature and you will be happy with this recorder. |

I have both a DMR-E50 and DMR-E20. There are certain Japanese soaps I record every day on the DMR-E20. They are heavily spammed with ads and do not run at exact times. They run somewhere in a half hour time slot for 15 minutes. I recored 4 segments on DVD-RAM. Then I make a playlist deleting all the ads etc. and copy it to permanent archive on DVD-R on the DMR-E50. With the cost of DVD-R now down to almost a $1 for top quality this is a very cost effective way to save these soaps permanently. BTW I also archive American Idol the same way as well as hundreds of MTV and VH1 music videos. The playlist facility is incredible allowing me to edit down to single frames. Great job Panasonic.

Superb picture quality. What sold me on this unit is the "Flexible Recording" feature that intelligently calculates the recording length and the space on the media and automatically adjusts the capture bitrate to make full use of the space. What a great engineering feature and a surprise that the other biggies like Sony and Pioneer and others use a block-select for bitrate where you are limited to 60, 90, 120 180 and 360 minutes. What if you want a movie that is 2:05? You are forced to use the 3-hour bitrate which is considerably worse than the 2-hour rate, quality-wise. Another feature that this unit has and the other big names don't is a built-in time base corrector (TBC). This is a must when capturing video off VHS tape because of tape stretch and mechanical slop. I already have one on my component video capture system, and the Panasonic models are the only ones I found anywhere near this price that have one built-in. Outstanding job, Panasonic. These set-top recorders have come a long way from the first-generation models to the current 4th gen models. These can truly replace a VCR now, and they have hit primetime. You can't go wrong with the Panasonic DMR-E50.
My wife recorded a movie off DSS satellite onto DVD-R and she swears the picture is better than a store-bought DVD! My wife is very technically un-savvy and she hates learning new gadgets, but she is pleased with this Panny unit and how easy it is to set up. Easy timer setup, fairly good manual and excellent menus. The only thing I would do is make the remote button layout a little more logical and group functions together better. That's a minor point and I think Panasonic deserves a standing ovation for this unit. |

Unfortunately discs created using Pixplay will not work on other DVD's around the family.
Since this was the only purpose of wanting to save pictures for TV veiwing I'm not sure whther to purchase.
If only I can see them than my PC creates better slide shows. |

| Tested unit extensively. It produced good quality video, but had poor menus. More importantly, the discs it produced were not compatible with any of the stand alone players I tried. The same players all worked with discs I produced on my computer using Roxio 6.0, Ulead Movie Factory 2.0, & TMPGenc DVD Author. Returned unit for refund. What a waste of time. |
