| New units are coming out this spring from Panasonic with faster transfer (copy) speeds. However, don't throw this unit away, it's still an excellent machine. X-Copy is good for backing up your DVD movies, but only if you have a DVD Burner installed in your computer, but what if you don't? If your like me, you purchased this unit so that you would not get frustrated trying to find the best dvd copying software. Plus, what about backing up your copy protected VHS Tapes? The newer units, although improved, still won't remove copy protection. For less than 90 bucks US, purchase a device from www.interneeds.com that will allow you to use this machine to make backup copies of your (any?!@) DVD or VHS movies. The device is called "vidtrackusa". There is even a convenient "converter link", which will calculate the actual price it will cost for your country. Guess what? for the same price as DVD X-Copy, you just upgraded your DMR-E30 without opening up your computer. I have backed up just about all of my DVD and VHS movies without any problems. |

| My only problem with this recorder is: I have recorded shows on this at varying speeds. I have used Ritek 1X dvd-r and Memorex 1X dvd-r and they work fine playing on the recorder, but they will not play on my other stand alone players. I have a region free Daewoo 5800 and an Apex 1110. They play fine on my Playstation 2 system. Anybody else having this problem? |

Just thought I'd mention a feature that none of the other reviewers have mentioned about this excellent recorder:
You can start watching the beginning of a recording while the Panasonic is still recording the end! For example, if you are recording a football game that started at 4:00pm and you get home at 5:00, there is no need to wait for the recording to end. You can start watching the game right away, and use all the features like timeslip, etc. The recorder will continue recording a later part of the game while you're watching an earlier part! If extended use of timeslip has you "catch up" to the spot where the recorder is recording, there are no problems except that it simply won't allow you to timeslip anymore (logically enough).
Simply a great recorder!!! The manual says that it won't play DVD-RW but it does. It just won't record to it. (It only records to DVD-RAM and DVD-R).

| Purchased my DMR-E30 last Thanksgiving (2002) and paid $625.00 at Sound Advise...worth every penny. Burned approximately 200 DVD-R disk, at all modes (XP/SP/EP/FR),w/multiple programs (ie. "Lord of the Rings I & II) on each disk, all digital quality from a DirecTV Satellite Receiver. All perfect...all work in each player that I own (ie. Sony 301+1 DVS870, Pioneer DVL 909 DVD/LD, HP XH485 AMD 1GHz Laptop and Panasonic Super DVDBurner II - SW9571-CYY). Media - for this unit I used General Purpose DVD-R by Leda (White/Silver) from Shop4tech.com, at .76 to .84 each, you can't go wrong (not 1 error on any disk). Copy from VHS is a little brighter than original, but your eyes adjust before you even notice. This is an excellent machine. I like the new units with the hard drives, but they not perfercted them yet (can't copy from DVD-R back to hard drive for multiple burns, if data on the hard drive gets erased). Besides, the availability to record to RAM disks is like having CDRW/Hard Drive capability. The prices have really come down...run out and get one today (still better than a VCR)! If you want to watch or record RAM disk on you computer and you don't already have a burner, pick up the Panasonic Super DVDBurner II at Shop4tech.com for under $140.00 bucks. Yes...I'm a happy camper! |

Compatibility problems with recorded DVD-R on other machines (Princo and Proformance discs), I have solved this problem recording on DVD-RAM, and transfering to my computer with my Panasonic multi drive SW-9571,($179 at "Newegg.com)and Ulead Movie factory 2).
Don,t buy Memorex DVD-RAM unless you can exchange them at the store, about 50% of the ones I bought are bad, I have to keep exchanging them until I get good ones. No problems with shut down at all yet, have used mainly for recording movies from the sattelite, using FR mode, you can.t tell the difference from the original.
See more of my comments on this machine on the DVD players section. |

| This is one fantastic unit. I've already burned over 300 disks and starting on #400. The only mistakes I've encountered were the ones I made. I trade tapes all over the world and now burn the DVD's for trade. I had burned an order for someone and wnated to see the difference on quality. So I played the VHS tape and the DVD I burned from this tape. The DVD came out better than the orginal tape. Very satisfied with this recorder. |

The Panasonic DVD-RAM works the best when burning directly from the player. Tried the Memorex DVD-RAM and it worked for about 10 times and then the disk just quit.
Burned 1 DVD-R from the player and it works pretty well.
Been using Memorex DVD-R burned with a Sony DRU510A to dub home movies. Haven't made any coasters with the DVD-R. Haven't had any success with DVD+R, though. Like to remind everyone when buring DVDs from your computer to burn at 2.4x, 1x is more preferred.
VCD works good with Roxio 5. Have not tried Roxio 6 yet with VCD.
Player is a great alternative to the VCR mainly due to the bulit-in tuner. Haven't had any problems with the exception of the faulty disks. |

| This is my DVD burner, so I'm learning. Everything I burn plays back on this unit just fine. But I'm having one consistent problem. I have tried Imation and Accu discs and they are both showing the same issue. When playing the burned discs on othere players (and I have tried about 10), around 80-90% through, you get pixelization. I have tried several sources (laserdisc, VCR) and even bought a video enhancer to boost the signal. I can't figure out if it is a heat issue, or a head alignment issue. Should I send this in for service or different media? |

| I happened to watch an old home vid from 1995 and noticed a lot of glitches were popping up, so I wanted a dvd recorder primarily to transfer my home video to disc. I Started pricing the E30 on line about 3 months ago and found it on a cnet link for about $475. Last month I was at BestBuy and found it (open box) w/all components Mint for $300. I burned a pay per view off the Sat. Flex mode (2hr 21 mn) on dvd-r that came out amazing.I also transfered some old vhs-c also amazing. The downside is ,as stated by other users, is that all the best functions are slated for ram. It's my first dvd recorder so it's not that big of a deal yet. About a week ago I was back at BestBuy and saw another E30 open box for $276 Mint. Well, now I have two! I slaved them together and since transferred some mini-dv onto the ram disc on unit #1 did all my editing ( scene shortening, scene moving, etc.)and copied it onto unit #2 dvd-r. I have only tried Memorex dvd-r's so far and have had no problems. I used the ram disc that came with the unit, obviously without any problems. I ran the component video to my Sony Wega and the picture is amazing. No firewire hookup for the mini-dv as mentioned by others previously, so I use the s-vid route and the quality is still great. I tried playing my creations on 3 different players - I have a newer Apex (not sure of model # right now)and the disc wont play (yes it was finalized). However I have an older Apex, about 3 yrs old and it worked fine. I also recently bought a Sony psyc player and that works fine. I'm surprized about the Apex, they're inexpensive but they usually play everything! My next project is the copycode. |

I've burned and played dozens of discs with no problems,I give it a 9 because of lack of Zoom function and remaining time indicator. Somebody here mentioned that his original VHS has better colours than the recording made with this unit. This can be because the unit has a 'movie filter' in it, it adds some color and some contrast. Im my opinion it makes wonders with most of the sources. Even BetaSP recordings turned better when recorded to DVD-R.
CAREFUL!!!!
Dont make second copies with this. E.G. dont copy a disk you wrote once on this recorder, use the original. The recorder slips the sound around one frame (1/25 second) which is not really noticeable for consumer users (we had some trouble in the professional word) but nauturally a second copy will be 2 frames. 2-3 frames slip can be easy noted at a sharp sound, like a heavy thing falling, or by a punch.
Anybody had problems with SVCD discs?? I cnnot play them back, movements freeze, video gets choppy. Or, normal picture, no sound. |

Bought this a couple of months ago, burned around 20 discs. DVD-RAM is great, but changing between programs can cause freeze rames (just like layer switch). Time slip is very good!! VCD can used, I tried SVCD and CVD, both played back but with lot of trouble. Eithere there are big pauses between every second in audio and video, or (after some fast forward) good picture without audio. I burned it on CD-RW with nero. I found a little trick togo in the service menu, but be careful. Its in the hacks section. Anyway its a good recorder, with lots of features. Cannot turn off the start menu when writing DVD-R :((( Can delete complete programs from DVD-R (doesnt makes more space!) No problems with DVD discs, wrote on a couple of brands, cannot remeber. Always the cheaper..

DVD-R burned have Compatibility problems with other players
(Proformance and Princo discs), can be solved copying them to the computer and burned into other disc, but still with some freezes and motion problem. The best way I have found is create a DVD-RAM and convert it on the computer to DVD-R with Ulead movie factory 2, of course you need a DVD-RAM drive, I,ve got the Panasonic multidrive SW-9571. ($179 at newegg.com)discs work perfect this way. Problems with Memorex DVD-RAM don,t buy it unless you can exchange them at the store, about 50% are bad, I have to keep exchanging them until I get the good ones. I would have liked a Zoom function and time remaining indicator, still a great machine, bought it 10 days ago I have burned couple dozens of DVDs no problems yet, also no shut down problems so far,
got it as a floor sample for $350. |

I have had this unit for 3 months and have burned about 30 discs without a hitch. When it screws up it is always at the beginning of a disc which is good rather than being screwed out of time and a blank, the time being more important than the blank of course. Overall the picture quality at the variable bit-rate is very good at 90 minutes or less and acceptable at 2 hours.4 and 6 are fine for stuff that isn't important. XP(1 hour speed) has problems where it looks like has dropped frames due to not being able to encode the analog video fast enough so that was a waste of time. It has shut down on me without any warning four times so far. I need reliability and this unit can't give me that. I would say without a firmware upgrade from panasonic this model is a total waste of time. It seems a lot of these units have the same problems.
I rate it a 6 out of 10 and would not advise anybody to buy one because of a 50% chance it will be a lemon. |

To Copy DVD to DVD all you need is the following:
-Apex AD-1500 DVD Player ($50 Walmart)
-Hack from DVDRHELP.COM hack section for removal of region codes, Macrovision and CSS (nerd-out.com). Simple CD-R process to update the Apex AD-1500.
-You are sky free to make perfect copies of any DVD from any region.
Have made hundreds of picture perfect copies.
That Simple.
I would give the DMR-E30 a 10 rating but the occasional freeze up and coasters it creates knocks it down a notch or two. Also with no digital coax or optical in for audio this should be considered before copying. Overall a very good DVD recorder and player.

Ian,
I also had the same pixilation problem as you, with the Memorex DVD-R. It would start three quarters of the way thru the DVD and either freeze up or make viewing impossible.
I changed to Samsung/Beall discs and haven't had a problem since. Memorex DVD-R's have had many issues lately due to shoddy quality and I would NEVER recommend them.

Great to see that everyone is having good luck with this burner. I got mine in December (for $699!! Waaaahh!!!) and was thrilled with it, even though it doesn't allow you to set chapter stops. I've used Memorex Version 2.0 DVD-Rs from the start and they worked beautifully, but suddenly every disc I burned started to fail (i.e. approx. an hour into a movie, obvious digital breakup would occur, making the film absolutely unwatchable). I took it in for warranty service, and Panasonic replaced the DVD-RAM drive (I assume this means they believed it was a real problem and not due to incompatible media), but the problem still occurs.
I am going to try the Accu discs next, and if the issue still occurs, I'll be taking in for service once more. Sounds like it could be either a media problem or just a rare, early failure. Since everyone else seems happy with this unit, I'll assume for now that everything is going to get itself worked out. If I could just burn DVDs again, I'd be happy! I love the fact that there are so many available inputs on the unit. |

I purchased the Panasonic DMR-E30 (manufactured Oct. 2002) in the past 2 weeks and ordered 500 Accus from Meritline.com. I received the discs this Friday and have been burning all weekend. 25 discs later and not a single problem. All the discs are completely full - the finalize fine and play perfectly in Apex 500w, HP100i DVD+RW drive, and portable RCA player. I can't attest to the longevity - but for 79 cents each I could not do much better.
Before I received my Accu discs I purchased a single DVD-R at Wal-Mart (Nashua) to test - and the unit did turn itself off when starting to record the second program on the disc - and again when I tried to set the program titles - but the disc still finalized and plays fine. Interesting that Nero indicates this one disc is improperly formatted and won't copy it.
I have standardized on DVD+R for my computer work and video editing using Pinnacle DV1000 and Adobe Premier - but I purchased the Panasonic DMR-E30 for real time writing where editing and custom menus are not required. I am quite pleased with the Panasonic DMR-E30 unit and the results with Accu discs. I have been using the TB1000 time base corrector for all input with no issues - even on old VHS home videos - TB1000 highly recommended.
As I don't have a DVD-R drive I can't tell who actually manufacture red my Accu discs. They are silver top - somewhat transparent, and each disc has black printed text on the clear plastic center as well as some characters on the inner silver section.
