I have nothing bad o say about this wonderful DVD Recorder. Have copied dozens of home made VHS tapes with it and recorded many favorite movies from satelite dish.
The transfer from DVD-RAM to the Hard Disk is SO FAST and generates no loss of quality. Transfer form the HD to DVD-RAM or DVD-R is also very fast. :)
The options in color for the Man Menu is great and makes your home made DVDs look really nice. :) |

I am very pleased with this machine and share most peoples positive comments. However, there are a few annoying omissions that Panasonic could easily have offered on a top of the range machine such as this. Firsty, the IEEE1394 port is only one way (input) unlike the equivalent Pioneer machine.
Secondly, having transferred an anamorphic recording to DVD-R, the fact that the recording is anamorphic is not recorded by the DVD. Therefore if you subsequently watch it on a 4:3 TV it will be displayed in anamorphic format rather than letterbox. This is not the case with a DVD RAM recording where you can specify how the programme should be displayed but given the cost of DVD RAM discs I can't see many people using them.
The most annoying thing is that you cannot dub from DVD to HD even your own copyright material. You can of course plug the output to the input and record the units output but why on a top of the range machine should you have to use work-arounds?

I have both a 100 and an 80. The 100 has a few more features. Dubbing is a little easier. Shows starting frames of each selection unlike the 80. The hard drive on the 80 went out after only a few months but was covered under warranty. I haven't used the extra card slots. There are so many menu setting choices, but little explanation of their ramifications, so why put them there? I tried using a PC, but the rendering time was outrageous, and failures were common. The Panasonic desktops are easier and more reliable. A salesman at Tweeter's told me there were compatibility problems between DVDs created on Panasonic and other players. Out of approximately 40 DVDs, I have only had one that would play on the Panasonic, but not on a Sony player. Overall I am pleased, but am looking forward to the day when Panasonic will provide greater editing capability built in.

I bought this recorder last week and am already disappointed.Let me explain:the quality is great, but I can't accept the fact that the most expensive model of the Panasonic recorders range has no inbuilt manual or automatic chapters creating possibility,it has no components outputs and thus no progressive video play mode, and most of all,you actually can't transfer a non copyrighted DVD from the DVD player to the hardrive, not even those which you recorded yourself. So my question is: isn't it expensive enough (1500 Euros),or are we only allowed to buy theirs products so as to participate in the economical process but only on their terms as they will impose you the limits within which you are allowed to use them, easily forgetting to leave you the necessary space to exert your legal rights ( which are smelting like snow under the sun)like for instance make a copy of your own bought or made DVD?.It's outrageous. In fact it begins to look like we are just expected to buy and shut up.I'll bring this thing back this coming week and buy me a good PC video card as it's more flexible (how long still?)and enables you to compensate for the lack of legal rights which they do not want to grant you by using third parties softwares.

I tried to play 5 different TDK DVD-R 4X disks. 3 wouldn't load. Screen appeared indicating the disk needed to be formatted before editing or recording. I wasn't trying to do either, just play backed up movies using DVD X copy platinum with Pioneer DVD-A06 buner. Fourth one played but was poor quality. The 5th was a HI-8 tape transferred via video capture card and burned with the same Pioneer burner. It was the only one that would play. Will most likely return the unit.

I have setup the system to record my favorite shows every week. Burn 6 hours on a single DVD-R and take it on the road with me, in fast mode it takes about 20 minutes to burn 6 hours on a 4X DVD-R, and it generates DVD menus and can play on any DVD. I use the 1394/firewire connection to download family video from digital camcorder and create multiple DVDs for the grandparents. The machine has an SD and a PCMCIA slot. Can read from both, but can write only to the SD card. Tested copying a half hour sitcome episode in MPEG-4 to the SD card, it plays in my PocketPC and Laptop, but no sound....there are a lot of configurations that needs to be done from the menu for mpeg-4/SD setup, so I might have missed something. The half hour sitcom took 42Megs on the SD card and took less than 2(two) minutes to download to the SD card.(.ASF file,Audio Codec G.726 32kb/s, 8kHz, Mono, Video codec ISO MPEG-4, Bitrate 282 Kbps, 176 X 144 resolution other resolutions available also) Some SVCD CDs play choppy, but others play OK.

The best part about this unit is no monthly subscription fees to TIVO. Thats why I wanted this little jewel. Also has SD card and PCMCIA card slots, can record in MPEG4, Dolby digital sound and has a DVD menu editor built-in (not many options, though). This is the start of some great PVR's to come. Lots of connections to choose from; Component, composite, RF, S-Video and Optical Audio out.

I bought the DMR-E80H (came out just before the 100, has a 80 gb HD) -- It's been WONDERFUL... my only complaint is the remote control is hard to use in low-light conditions (Odd, since Panasonic was wise enough to put a "light" button on their Wide Screen HDTV remote!). I have encountered the situation where it displays an error message when trying to record copy-righted material when using a LINE-IN configuration(if you try to dub a VHS tape you'll see it), however, if your hookup is such that you are recording "off screen" from your television rather than through direct hookup, you won't encounter the problem. It plays VCD's I created on my computer (Toshiba SD-5002 drive) beautifully and movies recorded on the Panasonic play perfectly on my older Toshiba 2300 player. Only wish they'd incorporated DVD-RW compatibility but understandably since they've allowed for DVD-RAM they probably felt it was redundant. (Unfortantely, my PC's DVD drive takes DVD-RWs but not DVD-RAM!)

I've had this unit for 2 weeks now. So far it's been great! The 80GB HDD is fantastic, and very simple to operate. It's as easy as recording on a VCR....but with better quality and more benifits. I've only used Princo (printed, not blank) DVD-R so far. They're cheap and off a spindle and I've had no problems with them. The editing features are brilliant...I just have to figure out how to make a playlist work as chapters on the finalized DVD, and a couple of minor tech things. The options for the finalized DVD menu are a little boring....but there is 9 different colours (styles?) to choose from so it could be worse. The manual is hard to read at first, but after a bit of trial and error, going back and forth between book and machine you'll pick it up. My basic rule is to follow the numbers (ie 1,2,3,4 etc) matched with the drive you're using (ie DVD-R, HDD, DVD-RAM etc)....this may save some confusion. The unit is also multi-zone....I've used regions 1, 2 & 4. All in all I'm very happy with this machine so far....I'm sure people had horrible things to say about VCR when it first came out, but DVD has all but taken over from the VHS tape....so this is your obvious next step.

Just picked one of these up on eBay. So far I love it. It has a 120 gig HDD not 80 gig. It has a IEEE1394(firewire) input on the front as well as analog inputs. It takes a little learning to effectively record shows and remove the commercials, but once done the results are fantastic. I keep reading about a copy protection CPRM that will prevent me from recording onto the HDD then recording that content to a DVD-R, but I have yet to encounter it. All in all, I can see this unit quickly taking over the duties of my many analog tape machines. I am going to conduct a test of recording directly to a DVD-R then ripping that content to a PC for authoring of more complex DVD programs. I will post when I have results.
