Very impressive dvd recorder. Records very nicely to dvd+ r discs (also to dvd+ rw). Set up is pretty simple. The software is not as easy to operate as say, Liteon's Easy Guider, but you quickly get the hang of it. My finalized discs, incredibly, even play back on my Mintek DVD player that is not progressive scan and won't play a lot of home recorded stuff. Like the first reviewer said there really is no error that can be done that cannot be corrected with this dvr. I hear that there is an easy work around on the copy protected discs and tapes that works very well. You can even set the thumbnail picture from your recording for your menu screen (although you may have to let the disc play through to get back to the title page). There are 5 recording lengths that I'm still getting used to as opposed to Liteon's 4. This is a very substantial, heavy dvd recorder with a nice clean look. Powder blue vacuum lcd and rounded function buttons set this off very nicely. It is possible to set this to region free (using a sequence of buttons on the remote control) but I haven't tried it. I don't get too many dvd's from say England or anywhere other than region 1 so I figure why mess with a good thing. I'm very impressed with the quality of this. Put your hand above the loader tray and it feels just like a freight train coming down the tracks - you can actually feel the power of the ball-bearing loaded disc drive. Remember that these units are not under warranty and if you call Medion support they will require a $25. fee for technical support. You can get a few free pointers at http://www.support.medion.com, though. Remember that if you purchase one of these be patient and don't do anything rash, like say head straight for the factory reset feature if you get a menu you can't back out of. The first couple attempts I made at recording resulted in a CD track menu that I couldn't seem to back out of so I simply unplugged the unit and threw those blank dvd+r's away. Read the owner's manual and let the computer teach you the best way it is programmed to operate. If you get stuck unplug the unit for 15 or 20 seconds and allow the chipset to initialize and reset and try again. Note that if you are lucky enough to find one of these that prices have come way down. I bought mine on a certain internet auction sight for about 1/4 of the msrp. This is the dvr of my dreams! Cheers.

This is the best recorder I have ever had I bought this about 2 years ago and have never had a problem that couldn't be corrected! If you can still find one I'd say get it!! I use to be upset with the copy protect problem but i figured out that all you have to do is start the recording before you start to play or watch!!! I can't believe some of the bad commets on this item maybe they have changed the firmware or something but if you can find one from say 12/03 production code then you will have the same one I have and it will impress you!! Also I love the 5.1 SS out of it!! Also I cant find out why but the so called REGION FREE hack doesn't work on mine but like I said it still does everything I need it todo!!!!

Very disappointed in this DVD recorder. Especially when I researched MEDION on the internet, and it turns out this German company has a very good reputation for their computer brand. This DVD recorder is sold in ALDI stores in Germany, England and the USA. Unfortunately their warranty service here in the USA is appalling. After my first MEDION failed I was told I would have to wait for a replacement until "the next boat arrives from overseas". This was a three month wait. Then, when they finally shipped the replacement unit, it turns out to be used. "Refurbished" maybe? Or did they just give me one someone else had sent back? Same problem eventually developed for the second unit, that is, suddenly no disc will finalize anymore. Instead displays a firmware error message. Yes, I tried the firmware upgrade. Same problem both units. Stay far away from this product.
