| It's been great for the price (as has been said around $50 from WM a year or more ago. I JUST WANT TO KNOW, hopefully, how if ever you can use timer recording on Overwrite???? Just like you always used to wear out a VHS by timer recording multiple times. The instructions show how to do Overwrite, and it's easy to find on your own. BUT, no mention of timer use in this way and how many times are you going to want to record something as you stand there? I can't reuse a disc to save my life for "the program I'm away from home for." |

ATTENTION:
How's this for a find, The PYE PY90DG is basically the same as a Magnavox MWR10D6. The menu's are exactly the same, Either remote operates both units exactly the same, Flawlessly (use the PYE remote to run the Magnavox, or vise versa). And the ultimate find,
If you have a Unfinalized disk from the Magnavox recorder, put it in the PYE, It will not only read it, it will allow you to edit it,add to the disk, but it will also finalize the disk.
Yes you heard me right, The PYE will Finalize a DVD made on the Magnavox!
How do I know, I have both the Magnavox MWR10D6 and the PYE PY90DG hooked up at the same time to my flatscreen and can switch between players.
I have tested this out and know this for a fact!!
If you can find both recorders, buy them! No more unfinalized coasters!!! |

Does anyone know (or can speculate) the difference between the MWR10D6 and the C-MWR10D6.

I have been buying DVD recorders since they first came on the market. My early DVD recorders had tons of problems. I attribute this to the early age of the industry.
I have used this recorder for 2 years, with no complaints I can remember.
Six months ago at WalMart I saw these on sale for $50 each (according to the WalMart's website they are asking $88.00 these days).
So I bought seven (7) more of them, at $50 each. At the time, my excuse was the reliability of the unit, the fact that the unit pre-dates troublesome "Go" copyright protection recorders, and my knowledge of how to swap parts between recorders, in case of future breakdowns.
Then this past summer, I got the idea to transfer all my VHS tapes, to DVD. That is about two thousand (2,000) VHS tapes. I realized I could get this done a LOT faster if I used all my Magnavox recorders at the same time.
With the aid of some A/B/C/D audio-video switches, nearly every RCA cable I have collected over a lifetime (I was born when Kennedy was elected president), and a bunch of used VHS players I bought at garage sales (none of which I paid more than $5 for (the cheapest were 3 for $2 each)), I set up all my DVD recorders to transfer tapes.
I expected one or more of the new units to be a "dud". Much to my surprise, NOT ONE of the Magnavox's was a lemon! They all worked flawlessly. I transferred all my VHS tapes over the summer, running the seven new machines simultaneously. Then I gave away all my VHS tapes through craigslist. |

If anyone knows where I can find a used remote for the MWR10D6 I'd really appreciate it - please email me at johnjosephgoodman@gmail.com
Perhaps anyone who's frustrated with the unit or having problems who wants to recoup at least a bit of cash?
I think they can be ordered for about $50 but I don't want to pay as much for the remote as I did for the DVD recorder in the first place
Thanks |

| Got for $50 at Walmart. It plays mp3s but I can get it to do it only if they are not in a folder. If I "hide" chapters and finalize they still show up on my other DVD player a old Mintek. Being my 1st DVD recorder I really don't have anything to compare it to. But I can say it's cheap and does most of what it says. |

The unit doesn't have a decent interface, navigation in the menus isn't intuitive. Zoom and other features are in the display menu and should be on the remote.
The unit sqeaks and makes all sorts of noise when playing a DVD+R or RW when it has been played a few times and forget about using cheap media, the disks skip so badly they never load.
I bought this unit to replace a sanyo DR-500 which quit reading DVDs. |

I LOVE this unit!!! I'm on my 5th spindle of 100 DVD-R. "O" problems. Most of the time I use the 6 hour setting...and am well satisfied with the output quality. Mostly, I'm recording the old films shown on TCM. Went to Walmart to purchase 1 or 2 more 1-20-08. Out of stock. Darn!

I have had NOTHING but trouble with this unit. I got it about a year ago. Six months into using it, I started having issues with "cannot record on this disc" errors, timer recordings eventually being the only way I could record, to then end up not working due to the 'cannot record on this disc' error. As well as the error of the DVD not finalizing or not writing at all. It would just freeze up and I'd have to unplug the entire unit (hard to do with a huge entertainment center).
I tried Memorex 16x DVD-R discs, and they worked for a long period of time (on last count I have used 45 of these DVDs), but then I started getting the 'cannot record on this disc' error a lot more, (even on ones that were right out of the package) figuring we got a bad batch of DVDs we switched to Maxell 'UP to 16x' DVD-Rs, was able to record on a total of 5 of them, before the unit gave me the 'cannot record on this disc' error on every new disc in the batch. Found an old DVD, one of the Memorex 16x DVD-R discs, and it worked with no errors....yet it was that batch that had originally started giving me issues! I have also used Maxell DVD-RWs (no speed listed on them) and get the error off and on. I do not have the cash to keep trying different brands left and right!
I have no clue as to what is causing this. I have read on other forums to try to record on only one speed of disc, only 8x speed, not UP to 8x speed, not lower, and not higher. Only 8x speed. I have yet to try this as I discovered this tip today.
Oh, and you want support for the unit? Good luck finding it! On the owners manual it says to contact support through www.funai-corp.com only they don't have this unit listed, although I did put an email into them today. Magnavox also doesn't have this unit listed. I was told it was now a Philips unit. Looked on their website, guess what? No unit listed there.
Another bad thing about this unit, and I don't know if its like this for ALL DVD recorders, is that you cannot watch one program and record another, like you could with a VCR. How annoying!
As for playback of movies from Netflix, its probably their discs, do you see how dirty they are when you get them? I've never had an issue playing a DVD other then it seems like a brief pause 1-2 times per movie (if at all) when its going from a chapter to another chapter, but you aren't missing any of the movie.
I rate this a 5, and it would get a much higher rating if I did not all of the sudden have all these issues with it, as for a basic DVD player it WORKED great. Doesn't work great anymore. |

I bought a Magnavox MWR10D6 DVD recorder for $50 at Walmart in early November 2007. I still haven't decided whether to keep it or take back for a refund.
I have tried recording on blank 16X Playo DVD+R, 16X Kodak DVD+R, and 4X Sony DVD+RW discs. The Playo disc wouldn't work. The other two kinds work OK.
I have used it to successfully transfer about 25 movies from VHS tape to DVD using the 1 hour, 2 hour, and 2.5 hour recorder settings. Those times aren't accurate. The actual times are approximately 1:05, 2:11, and 2:45. The resulting video quality was generally poor, although the audio was usually OK. A few of the transfers were acceptable quality, especially those I had recorded in S-ET VHS mode using a Mitsubishi S-VHS recorder. I only made this attempt because these movies are not available on DVD, otherwise I would order the DVDs.
As a DVD recorder, I would rate it an 8. It could be improved by offering more versatile recording times, such as 1.5 hours. It also makes inefficient use of disc space, generally leaving about 1 GB of available space unused, so the quality isn't as good as it could be. For example 2-hour movies I recorded using the 2 hour setting generally only used 3.5 GB of disc space.
I have also tried to use it as my primary DVD player to play movies from Netflix, Blockbuster, etc. It usually works OK, but there are occasional problems. Something is wrong with the Pause operation, because after awhile (perhaps an hour) it loses its place and won't resume correctly. It also occasionally locks up completely while playing a movie (remote control won't work), especially with episodic movies or TV series, requiring that I unplug it to recover. It has also frozen while playing a movie, cause unknown, again requiring a reset. In this last incident, it played OK on a 2nd try (no freeze), and the DVD movie also played OK on a different DVD player. It skips occasionally, usually skipping the video only, while playing the audio OK. I believe it has the most problems with the Verbatim DVD+R DL discs which I use to backup my movies, although they usually play OK.
So, as a DVD movie player, it is somewhat unreliable, and I give it a rating of 2 in that regard. My old Emerson EWD7003 player from 2002 is far more reliable.
An average of those two ratings means I give it a rating of 5 overall.
On the positive side, it has a Dolby 5.1 digital decoder. It also has plenty of connectors. I use S-Video and it has 2 S-Video input connectors (1 front, 1 back), as well as the 1 S-Video output connector on back of course. The same for ordinary RCA video and audio connectors. It also has RGB component connectors on the back for more modern TVs and will do a progressive scan if you need it. |

Additional notes: Some of the built in feature on this unit are turned OFF, like the "s-video out." It must be turned "on" through the menu.
The unit on the front panel also lacks "recording speed selection" which the SV2000 has on it's front controls.
Use DVD-/+R for archiving programs. Use DVD-/+RW for such things as TV programs and video that you will not keep.
If you use DVD-/+ RW and if you end up with some errors after several recordings, or can't record to the disk, you will need to do a FULL FORMAT. This will make the disk reuseable again.
You may have heard that DVD-/+RW can be recorded up to 1000 times. Keep in mind that when you format and then record to the max capacity of the disk, that these two task reduced that 1000 times by two. So 1000 times is now reduced to 998 recordings.
At the present time I am keeping track of the hours I am placeing on this unit as well as the number of recordings. I am interested in the quality/reliability of this product. I will post figures from time to time and the type of media used. |

Ok Day 2 of playing with the MWR10D6; This is an update.
My DVR is set up with the cable line coming directly into the unit ( no cable box is used.) What you see is what you get.
I used the same media that I posted a day earlier on this site. I recorded a one hour show (actually 1hr 5 mins and 16 sec.) and, the quality of the picture was the same as watching the program on the TV. No degration of any kind, no blocks ( which you get on low speed recording) and no noise; The picture was clean and/or identical to the incoming video signal.
I did another recording after reformating the disk but this time, I set the recording speed to "SLP" (6 hr recording setting.) Note: Formatting a disk takes approx 1 minute to do and all brand new disks will be formatted automatically when inserted in this unit--assuming the media you use, will work in this unit.
I did a one hour recording and when played afterwards, the picture quality was better than a VCD recording but not as good as SVCD.
There will be "slightly" noticeable blocks when the picture has a dark back ground and not so much with a light back ground. Picture sharpnes is reduced at slower recording speeds but here, the video recording was still very, very good and I have no complaints.
Fast action video shots, seems to make these blocks stand out a little more. Over all, this speed setting did not distract from enjoying the program.
In comparison to the VCR recording for both speed settings (one hour and 6 hour,) the MwR10d6 displayed an outstanding and great-quality video, respectively.
Note: I gave this unit a 9 rating because it did not have channel selection buttons on the front of the unit like the SV2000 had.

I bought this unit when the SV2000 was no longer available from Walmart. I needed a replacement for my VCR tape recorder which I used only for recording tv shows; The mechanism that feed the tape up against the rotating video drum stopped working properly.
After doing research on the SV2000 and then comparing it to the MWR10D6, I discovered that the same manufacture makes both of these items. Upon closer inspecton, I found that the connections on the back of both units were "INDENTICAL:' Even the metal shell (under side, left and right sides and, the back were identical.
The front of both units were almost identical except the SV2000 had two additional buttons which allowed the user to select channels so that you did not need the remote control to select channels.
I had on hand, an off brand of GQ(great quality) DVD+RW 4X 4.7GB 5 pack disks with their own individual cases: Bar code: PLU # 4089042 UPC 690848105274
The MWR10D6 formated the disk with no problems. I recorded a one hour SCI-FI show at the "EP" setting (4hrs recording) and played it back and I rate the picture quality as being better than an SVCD. It looked great when you compared it to video tape going at the same speed ( 4 hrs on a 6 hrs max recording.)
The unit only cost me $49.98 at Walmart (before tax.) The non-technical folks may have difficulty using this machine since, the manual is quite thick and not as simple to operate as a VCR tape unit.
I'll send additional posts on this machine as I play with it a little more down the road :-))
Additional note: After making this short recording, I threw the disk into "CyberHome's" CH DVD-300 DVD player and it played the one hour recording with no problems. No video glitches, no blocks, no nothing!!
I did not even have to finalized the disk where as, DVD-+R and DVD-RW you must if you want them to play in other dvd players.

Has a very good picture, but there are some key features missing. First, there's no A-B editing (such as editing out commercials), so you have to be careful when dubbing. Second, there's no Flexible recording that I could find; you have to round up to 2 hrs, 2.5 hrs, 3 hrs, etc. Lastly, the S-Video in doesn't seem to have a picture. I don't know why.
I bought this to replace my old Panasonic DMR-E65 since the new Panasonic recorders have a bad picture and black traveling lines on the screen. It's worth the money ($98).
To record movies that are copyprotected, I use GoDVD Sima CT-2 Video Enhancer. It can enhance video quality for old home movies, but it also defeats Macro and the like. Just remember to unplug it when not in use, or it will short out. |

Bought this as a replacement for the ILO recorder that went bad.
This a great recorder. I've used several different brands and several different speeds and all have recorded fine on this machine.
I've recorded well over 20 discs so far and not one bad recording in the entire bunch.
Like that you can name the title and select your own picture for the thumbnail. Also like that you can put the chapters where ever you want and not the times set by the recorder.
I've recorded on the following:
Sony DVD+R 8x
Fuji DVD+R 4x
Memorex DVD+R 8x
HP DVD+R 16x
A terrific recorder and worth more than the selling price. |

Just adding my two cent's on this wonderful machine;
I got so much great use out of the first one I bought, I quickly went out (a month later) and bought a second!
Pros: Works great recording VHS tapes/non Macrovision
and also tapes Cable TV/ Paid Cable (Showtime) great.
Loves DVD-RW, but handles DVD+RW, and DVD-R with out a hitch.
I've used:
DVD-RW:
Office Depot
TDK
DVD-R:
Taiyo Uden
TDK
Sony
Verbatim
records fine without a hitch.
Plays back DVD+R DL Verbatims great without error.
Plays back burnt CD-R, burnt Mp3 CD-Rs, and Audio CDs great.
Also handles VCDs encoded in VCD 2.0 spec using
VCDBuilder on Mac with no problem.
Cons:
Will pickup any stray dirt as bad medium and
spit out disc unable to record.
Apparent re-use on DVD-RW with these units is 4 times max. Fifth time gives you spotty recording effort. So don't re-use your DVD-RW/+RWs
more than four times, without replacing them with
fresh media, or you'll find your timers may not
go off as planned.
No RF modulation, but you can get RF Mods for as little as $9 at Big Lots, just do not use more than one RF Mod
if you have two units like I do: I found that having
two RF mods on my cable in my house caused one
of the machines to not properly record channel 03. Since moving at lest one unit to a newer TV,
both work flawlessly.
The Remote is ancient.I plan on trying to investigate into a larger Magnavox Universal remote to see if that
will help.
Still for my first DVD Recorders, I'm very happy.
I hope Funai still will make these by the summer, I plan on adding a third to the house altogether! |

| Just an update from my last post.I have now owned the Maggy for 4 months, and have recorded about 50 movies and alot of tv shows on dvd+rw,+ and -r discs, unit works fine,no failed recordings, discs playback fine on 2 other dvd players. Also transferred some movies from vhs to discs, and they came out just like original recording, without a hitch.Think all around a great recorder, and can now be bought for only $109.00 at Walmart, great deal. |

Hi folks,
Can someone help me with a set up problem on my new recorder.
I have an older TV that requires an RF modulator, as well as a cable TV box to provide the digital picture.
My set up is as follows;
1) coax cable from wall to cable box
2) coax cable from cable box to recorder
3) coax cable from recorder to the rf Mod. + audio and video cable from recorder to RF mod.
4) coax cable from rf Mod to TV
Can anyone point out what I am obviously doing wrong. I get no picture or sound when the recorder is turned on.
thanks, |

| This is a revision to my last post. I noticed after more thorough use that i was wrong in my previous post the unit DOES NOT play SVCD but WILL play VCD'S. MP3 long file name appeared to work on my first try but come to find out the files all had short names lol with files with larger names are truncated... Another gripe i have is that when there is time left on the disc but not enough to record a movie on it leaves an "EMPTY TITLE" in the index that cannot be removed. no big deal but kind of annoying however to work arround this if you record to the empty space until the disc is full then go in the edit menu and delete the title this may remove the "empty title" from the index. Still over all a great player/recorder for the money still a 9 |

Not too bad for a Walmart DVD recorder. $98 or so.
Made by Funai. Also, for the holidays Walmart has been selling SV2000 WV10D6 recorder for about $80 in store near me. This appears to be same exact recorder. Walmart.com sells the SV2000 for $59. |

PROS: Price tag at $98.00 at wal mart, Easy setup and ease of use, Does everything it claims to do, Decent recording quality at all speeds, Decent Menu and editing system, Decent OSD via the display button on the remote control.
CONS: The remote control design is not very ergonomic and feels and looks rather old school. There is no front panel display, and finally even though the unit is equipped with a cable ready tv tuner There is no RF Modulator, Just a pass through antenna coax so if you have an old school tv with just a 75 ohm coax connector you will need to purchase a modulator for around 20 bucks. These cons are the only reason it gets a 9 instead of a 10 but if i were to rate on over all performance for recording and playback it would be a 10.
I feel it is a good bang for the bucks!!! |

| Decent recorder for the price. Records +R -R & RW discs well. Remote is ergonomically lacking. For some reason, chapter stop edits are not preserved when discs are finalized; leaving you with the default chapter breaks and all commercials- even if you wasted your time editing them out. Magnavox disavows all knowledge of the player's existence & do not find it on Funai's website; so future firmware upgrade outlook is poor. |
