The remote is rather small. The buttons are small too. I guess you can't put big buttons on a small remote. The buttons are labeled well. But the remote is definitely not the strong point of this DVD recorder.
I am using this recorder to record off of satellite feed. The satellite I am using is one of those huge 12 foot satellites. Reception is excellent and so are the recordings. I honestly can't tell the difference between the 2 hour setting and the 4 hour setting. Both are very acceptable and much better than VHS.
I tried the finalized disc in two Panasonic DVD players; a 5 year old model and a 2 year old model. The dvd played just fine in both.
The disc also played on the computer. Windows Media Player version 9 had no problem playing the disc. However, Nero Showtime 3 had issues. My best guess is that Nero doesn't like the .BUP files. This is the file structure of a 2 session, 2 hour per session recording:
\VIDEO_RM
VIDEO_RM.BUP
VIDEO_RM.IFO
VIDEO_RM.DAT
\VIDEO_TS
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VTS_01_0.BUP
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.IFO
I used Verbatim DVD+R 2.4x speed discs. No problems.
Verdict: A great price for a DVD recorder. Bought at Sam's Club for $100.

Bought this machine to serve as a replacement for old VHS recorder and so far has more than met my needs. To date have only fed it +RW and -R disks, (Maxell & Verbatum). All disks recorded are good and play not only in this machine but my Panasonic DVD player as well.
On the not so good side are: Remote is physically small so big fingers are not an advantage. Layout of buttons could be improved. Finding disk finialise function in the set-up screen is not intuitive. There is no display on the machine which you may or may not find a disadvantage. With a large screen TV, I'm setting back far enough I can't read the displays on most of my equipment so viewing functions on the TV OK for me.
Trying to operate blind, without OSD can present a couple problems. With a RW disk in the machine you can't turn on the machine and just hit RECORD and away you go. You must first hit STOP so the TITLE screen drops out. This is not true for record once disks. If you try to edit out the commercials on the fly, there is no indicator on the machine to show you if you are in the PAUSE mode. You can mark the commercials and hide them so they are skipped when being played. Not all players support this function but does work on this machine.
Overall this is a good basic machine for recording and a good value. The qlty of the recordings are quite good when connected to your TV with component cables and have been recorded in the 1 or 2 hr mode. These recording look good for SD even on a large HDTV screen. |
