| I started using +R's and recorded some disks, if the disc becomes full and ends I have had issues with it updating the disc menu, but was able to finalize it. 2 did not and I could not use the disc and guess I lost what I recorded? Went to +RW and got a couple to record, but now I am having disc error problems. It would record the show, but when it would go to update when stop or end time reached I would get a fault, then the disc could no longer be used as it would show disc error. Now it will not read any disc at all and it is being sent back for exchange after just 2 months. I wish this would have happened before the 30 day mark, I will learn to test things hard the first 30 days as this one would have went back to BestBuy for sure! Now I have to hope for a good exchange and pray the discs I have not completed but have stuff on will be able to be recovered with the new box. I hear they can be fixed on a PC but I do not know how or where to find help for this. This seems to be a weak link that only the recorder you use can read the disc until finalized, whats with that? Maybe an edit thing.... who knows... I feel I was burned on many hours of lost programming, I will have to catch re-runs now at some point. |

In a nutshell - not ready for a primetime yet.
Had it for about 2 weeks and returned to BBuy.
This was the only player I could find that did MPEG2 in 6hrs mode, all other are doing MPEG1. MPEG2 ws half D1 so it gave nice resolution boost to 480 lines.
Lots of recording qualities - 1/2/2.5/3/4/6/8 hr mode.
Encodes audio to AC3, has component input (interleaced only), S-video in on front/back, DV input.
Now the bad:
The remote is totally unintuitive, it''s missing basic functions like - Display/Info. Menu system a bit cumbersome too, lots of navigating before getting to the part of interest. The biggest let down is that it will not be able to use disk that was used on a PC, it says unknown data and cannot even erase it by itself. I've found a trick to do that, you have to FROMAT it (not erase) on PC, one program that will format it is Nero CD/DVD Speed in Extras menu).
Picky about media, can produce disks that it will not read by itself later on. If you let the recording run till the end of the disk it will not properly finalize it so it will show as empty in the menu (you can still recover the recording on PC). Fast forward/revese functions are very flaky too. There is no progress indicator so you don't really know where you are.
Overall there are probably better products out there (although I'm still looking for one).

I got the unit at best buy. Model: MRV660/17
I have burned over 100 DVD's with the recorder so far.
It has locked up a couple of times only because the video camera connected to the firewire was acting up. I just disconnected the camera and powered the unit off and back on again. As soon as I got the camera working it worked ok to create a dvd from it. It needed the heads cleaned.
Scheduled recording works great. If you don't care about the video quality the 8 hour mode gets a lot of 1 hour shows onto 1 disk!
It has lots of inputs and outputs, including component!
I have seriously considered buying a second one so I can record 2 shows at once.
I have tried at least 3 brands of media and all have worked ok.
I bought the unit for recording, not for my player, so I haven't tried to play a lot of different discs on it. I have other players I use for playing discs and save this one for recording.

This unit works OK for DVD recording. The picture on 6-hour mode is better than 6-hour mode on VHS. However, due to the vast number of limitations, I will need to return this unit to the store and try something else.
1) Will not read a picture CD properly. I have a CD with 5,526 pictures, and it only sees 128 of them.
2) Pictures appear painfully slow. Quite disappointing when a 3-year old unit displays them instantly.
3) Could not get it to read a DVD+R with MP3 files at all. CD media works OK, but will not show folder names.
4) Unattended recording only holds 6 events. I haven't seen any kind of recorder that does less than 8 events in about 15 years!
5) Cannot set the intervals of automatic chapter placing. |

| This unit work very well for 1 month. I have been using new HP DVD+rw discs. On the 5th week it began to freeze on recording for no apparent reason. Many times it would quit recording just after 15 seconds. I was recording TV broadcast only. Finally after the 2nd month it would hardly work at all so I sent it to the Philips repair center where it sits today. I don't believe this is a lemon but an inherent design flaw of the Philips/Magnavox recorders. |

I have a few issues with this recorder. Maybe I have a lemon.
1) Sometimes the erase function doesn't work for a show recorded on a DVD+RW. If the unit is restarted, erase will work correctly.
2) The firewire input gets glitchy. Sometimes the video will separate into large digital blocks. Kind of like a satellite dish will do when it starts to lose a signal. Switching between inputs will either fix the problem or cause it. Only happens on firewire.
3) If a signal is lost, the unit will do one of three things (randomly). It will either detect the signal and resume as normal. Or, it will fail to detect the signal and sit until you switch between inputs on the remote. Or, my personal favorite, if the signal is lost repeatedly from a bad vhs tape, the unit sometimes just turns off.
4) Switching to the composite input that I use for the cable box, the recorder will say it doesn't detect a signal. I know the signal is there so I wait... 15 seconds later, poof, it sees the signal and works as normal. Count to 15, it is not as short as you might think.
5) If the DVD+RW has data on it from a computer, the player will not be able to erase the data. You need a virgin dvd to record onto. If the player recorded it, it can erase it. Otherwise, it will not erase it.
6) Sometimes the output is black and white. I can't figure it out. I power cycled the unit and the color came back. I also experienced a color shift when using firewire. Not all the time, but once the color yellow was to the left of where it should have been. It makes no sense to me why yellow... but, once again, a power cycle fixed it.
7) I almost forgot. It has a fan on the back. My unit has a bad fan. It chirps and squeels. *Very* annoying. When the fan is behaving, it is quiet. But usually in the middle of recording, it will start to act up.
*If* there was a firmware update, I would be willing to try it, but there isn't. So I will return this unit and try another brand. If everything else worked perfect, I would replace the fan with a higher quality one. This unit, however, is not worth the time I have already spent on it.
