does anyone have had a problem with the system not completing the preparing of a new disc. Mine stops at 27% and then spits out the disc. I uploaded the firmware (march 2006) and still doesnt work. It all started with the Sony -R media. I tried with the brand i was using before and it still doesnt work. Help! This unit used to work so well for the last 1.5 yrs. |

I have been having problems with "jitters" and freezing (usually around the 80-minute mark or longer) on DVDs burned with this machine. Almost none of my friends' other DVD players can play the discs. One only plays them at abour 4x speed, although they were burned in SP. Another can't play back the sound. Most of the others just skip all over the place.
I had an all-region version of this unit, but Lite-On told me to fix the jitters I should download the new firmware, which I did in April, 2007. Now that I did that, I lost my all-region ability. The hack on this site doesn't work with this new firmware version. |

Overall I am happy with the player. It handles a wide range of media types including xvid, divx 3.11, 4, 5, and 6 in a wide range of container formats (eg: avi, divx, mpg) with a wide range of audio support (mp3, pcm, wma, ac3).
It also plays multiple subtitles and multiple audio tracks integrated into .divx container formats.
It also sports many nice features for recording and playback -- truly a full featured device.
However,
- It takes about 11 seconds from power on to first functional video
- It takes about 10 seconds to load a disk
- It's menu system is not easy to navigate (I am still discovering functions)
- The worst part -- It seems to have issues with media that is aging. Disks that play find on my Phillips 642, my computer or another divx player i have tend to hiccup and choke on this -- copy the movie to a new media and it plays fine. -- I am guessing this is simply a cheap dvd-rw drive integrated into this device.
For Lite-on:
- A remote with a subtitle button would be nice.
- A file listing would be good for disks with multiple tracks (instead of simply treating each file on a movie disk as a chapter)
- A higher quality dvd drive would be good |

Here is a workaround to convert PAL VHS to DVD:
1. Use a new DVD, No not try to add to an existing DVD
2. Hit Play on the VCR
3. Unplug the RCA Video cable(Yellow) from the DVD recorder and make sure that the audio is still plugged in.
4. Once you hear audio hit RECORD on the DVD RECORDER, Wait 2-3 sec and plug back the Video cable.
5. That's it.. Now it will record PAL...
The trick is to plug in the Video after the recoding has started, However, if there is no audio the unit may not start recording, That's why you need to hit play on the VCR and wait for few secs for the audio to start before you hit Record on the DVD RECORDER...
Drawbacks:
You can not edit the titles after recording, You will still get an error message "Wrong signal type"
Too bad that I am not an hacker.. I am sure there is a way to change the firmware to allow PAL recording.
It's obvious that the unit can record PAL with no problems...
I managed to finalise the DVD and test it on 2 other players.

| This is a PAL machine and will play 25fps video nicely. NTSC DVD and NTSC DIVX/XVID have jerky playback due to the frame rate difference. The software update can't really cure this so instead you get audio / video out of sync on NTSC playback if you try the upgrade. |

When i first bought this dvd recorder/player it played back all of my xvid movies fine, however some of them would play back with jittery video.
i updated the firmware to 8/21/06 expecting this to fix this problem. indeed it fixed the stuttery video, but it caused another problem. any xvid with 25fps play in sync with the video/audio, but for example a lot of movies are in 23.976 fps, when i playback an xvid movie now there is no stuttery video, but the audio lags behind about 2 seconds.
i also tried the 8th january 2007 update, cannot see whats changed, but has not fixed this problem with out of sync xvid when 23.976 fps. has anyone else had this problem with this dvd player/recorder? |

Bought it at Costco for $120 about 6 months ago and it will go back to Costco.
Only reason I bought this recorder was that it plays European DVDs.
Bad things:
1. Time slip when viewing your recorded TV shows; mouth movements and voice are out of sync. This doesn't happen always, but pretty frequently.
2. No S-Video port
3. It takes about 30 seconds to load a disc
4. Has problems recognizing discs (your own recorded DVDs).
5. TV Tuner is the worst. If watching TV with Liteon Tuner, horrible quality.
Stay away from this device, not ready for prime time

| It looks great and works well (so far at least). Better navigation for DivX files would be an advantage. As I mostly use Satellite Box connected via Scart cable (not included in the box), I haven't tried scanning the frequencies and can not comment on that. Also VideoPLUS+ cannot be used when connected in this way (or at least I don't know how to set it up). |

Just purchased the LVW-5115GHC+ from Tesco (Derby, UK) for £68.84. No rating yet as I'm still trying to get it setup.
For some reason, the channel scanning won't pick up Channel 4 - I’ve tried many times using Auto/Antenna/Cable. My TV(s) and VCRs have never had a problem.
The Channel Scanning facility is pretty bad - there doesn't seem to be any way of manually adding a channel. It will only add channels that it finds.
I'm not going to return it just yet as I'm waiting for a reply from Liteon tech support. At this price, the DVD Recorder seems to provide everything I need.
BTW, Tesco support were not that good - they just stated the obvious - reset to factory settings, take back to store for refund/replacement.
I upgraded to the new firmware (dated 21/08/2006) and still had the same problems.
Also, the Manual & QuickStart sheet only refers to CANAL+ decoders (French). Makes me wonder how much work Liteon have done to get this ready for the UK market.

| Unbelievable that it has neither s-video in nor out. No way to tell that, either, from the box. How do they expect people with digital cable boxes/dvrs to be able to record something? Use the yellow composite input? Ridiculous. It goes back to CostCo today! |

In response to 'The X Man' about upgrading ruining the ability to play unpacked Xvid...
I upgraded to the 05/11/2006 firmware and was able to play an xvid with bitstream unpacked by mpeg4modifier.
As others have mentioned, I wish it had file navigation features. I guess it can't be perfect. Overall, this is a great player/recorder. |

Great DVD Recorder. Works on everything I threw at it.
Time recording works great and recording from all inputs.
Only CON - no s-video in or out. Much better then the Citizen 801DVR I also own which IMO is POS. |

my cousin send me this unit Liteon 5115 as a present from USA, i live in GREECE and the problem is that when i'm trying to setup the tv chanels in the section of region countries has only USA and CANADA do you have any idea how can add more countries from EUROPE in order to search for tv chanels with EUROPE system?

| Excellent Recorder. The only downside I could find ia that there is no menu for MP3 files so you can`t see track names etc. Has anybody trken the lid off to see if there is and IDE connector for a HDD inside as there is very little differnce between this model and the next one up with the HDD. Perhaps if there is a bay for a HDD then the Bios of the machine may see it upon boot up. Let us know if anyone as tried this. Worth a thought. |

| I cant get my player to play back some of my dvdr even though they were burnt on a liteon burner on my pc. Most of the discs are the Ritek Ridisc brand. I've even tried a liteon disc burnt on a liteon burner and still wont play back. Any ideas |

| I am trying to update the firmware with the March 10th download and it does not seem to take. It loads fine and when I restart it still shows 16c in the first set of numbers. How do I verify the version of the firmware? I thought it was the first set of characters in the bottom of the setup screen. |

The new March 10th update seems to add compatibility with DVD+R DL, a previous DVD+R DL disk I had wouldn't play before, now it plays fine.

Warning!! Don't update to the latest DA18 firmware just released on Jan 10,2006 by Liteon.
After the update, all my "unpacked" bitstream Xvid can no longer be played. Only the Xvid/Divx Mpeg4 fles which are originally unpacked can be played. The previous firmware could play the "unpacked" bitstream MPeg4 if I use Mpeg4Modifier to unpack them. It seems it is no longer the case. Tried three prevous burned disc and two newly burned ones. None of them played.
Email Liteon for a solution but no reply yet after three weeks.
