I am having the SAME EXACT problem as the last post! Seems freaky this is the same date!!! Blank DVD disk will take FOREVER to intialize, mine stops at 25% forever and the same at 98%. I have upgraded the firmware this morning, still to no avail. It will attempt to start recording but the counter on the On Screen Display (OSD) will not move. Then the unit will stop and sometimes I will get a message in the upper left corner of screen saying either blank disk or unknown disc. I noticed this problem last week. Have had no other issues with this machine, now it just seems to have a mind of its own and has quit recording. It will however play DVD's that it has recorded, and other DVD's such as movies just fine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

i bought my 5101 at wally world last year,it worked well, and i was very happy with it.but i just got rid of my 47 inch tv becouse it was always green.i found out this was caused by cabbage head, from the 5101.i also am having problems with getting it to record at all! it starts to initialize then stops at 25 per cent for about 5 minutes, then creeps up to 98 percent in about another 3 minutes, then another 3 or 4 minutes to complete.then it may start to record then pause. it may tell me the disc is unrecordable.i will then check the disc and it will say recordable blank.i have had a hard time finding the web site for uploads, and am going to try that next.thanks to those that reported the e mail address for liteon!

Unit worked upon receipt, then after I played a couple of MP3 CD's on it, it would no longer read or write any DVD's. I updated the firmware successfully per the LiteOn website, and still no luck. Tried cleaning the lens, etc. . nothing. After contacting LiteOn, they gave me the runaround about having to go back through the place I purchased it (online). They gave me NO suggestions or comments to help.

For what it's worth, one other comment:

I sometimes need to turn the unit off and unplug it for a short time before restarting. This will clear up many problems such as it locking up when Auto Initializing the disc.

I just switched over and am having good luck with Staples DVD+R discs.

This unit has worked relatively well for me. Like other users, I've had to become a sharpshooter with the remote.

One tip I've learned to avoid making coasters: Record 30 seconds of paused video first. For example, I record directly off TIVO and just record the program description. This gives nice thumbnail images of each program on the disc as well.

The unit appears to get overwhelmed if the first 23 seconds have lots of video action and mine goes into pause mode and locks up. Since I started doing the above, I rarely make a coaster now with the Sony and TDK media, I've been using.

This is not a example of the best product that Lite-on makes. I bought it because I had good experience with their PC burners. I can only say the LVW-5101 is cheap.

I hope the post from "tipstir" is correct. I just updated the firmware to 5/3/05 today (8/3/05).

My complaints are:

1. Extremely poor remote range. I have to move towards the unit to get it to work (under 10 feet). There are too many buttons with tiny print. It's not a remote that you use everytime you watch TV so you have to try to strain to see what is in your hand.

2. The clock gains more that 15 minutes per month. That makes it useless for TV recording without constant clock corrections.

3. It always plays the subtitles with a rental DVD, no matter how I change the settings in the default menu set-up.

4. Rental DVD's will not go directly to autoplay or the root menu. You have to press the source input button inorder to start a DVD. It should over ride the current source when you physically load a DVD into the tray. It should be an obvious conclusion that your want to watch a DVD when you open and close the tray.

5. This is the second unit that I'm using. I returned the first to Sam's Club after a month. I'm not sure that I will keep this one. I bought the extended warranty. The LVW-5101 was pulled from the shelves by April, 2005.

I ran across this web-site when I "googled" LVW-5101. It looks like a very viable source of user experience with DVD issues. I'll use it and referr my friends to the site.

Since owning the LWM-5101, I've updated the firmware twice to fix to major problems:

1. Power Shutdown no turn on - 1st firmware 2004
2. Clock Advancing Countinously - 2nd firmware 5/2005

I'm happy with it, because it does one thing it can record off Comcast Digital Cable into Stereo Hi-Fi. There are multi-connections I/O best to use 24K gold plated A/V cables and Optical connections, but A/V and Analog Stereo cables are just fine. I know this model doesn't have a HDD to record, but you can burn and re-burn using DVD+RW and the unit will playback DVD-R as well as DVD+ dual layer.

I prefer using HQ DVD+RW by Verbatim works excellent!
If you see this unit buy it, it inexpensive but a good deal now after the 2nd firmware 5/2005, just don't forget to pull out the CD update you burn with Nero when the tray opens.

Take care all...

I've been using this particular model for over six months now and, like so many others, have noticed the pros and cons of this unit.

PROS:

1-It records off television extremely well. Haven't seen a better picture or sound quality from such a low priced unit any where else.

2-Seems to be more stable and reliable than any other unit produced by its parent company.

3-There's an 8 event timer recorder (other Lite-On units have only 5).

CONS:

1-Picky about the media it will sucessfully record on. Makes many coasters if not done right (will explain further).

2-Sometimes will not even read the discs that it burned.

3-Produced a green-tint in the upper left corner on your recorder, causing older tapes to look like several generations from original...even if its a good off-air-recording.

4-Sometimes unit will pause, for no reason, during the first few seconds of a new recording, causing the final recording to skip.

There are a few other quirks regarding this unit, but overall, it's pretty good for the prices. There's just a few things that you can try to get better recordings out of the unit:

1-When burning a new disc, burn the disc completely before removing it from the unit. You won't be able to burn a title, remove the disc, then come back later to add on to it. The unit may end up erasing everything altogether as it will reintialize the disc, making it appear blank.

2-Make sure that when using old VHS tapes, particulary those taped in SLP/EP speed, make sure that the source tape is tracked properly. No excessive dropouts or tape skewering, for this will cause heavy pixiliation and lack of audio synchronicity.

3-Try to use nothing lower than the EP mode for SP source copies.

4-Always test finalized discs on unit that burned it, and a nearby DVD player.

Like I said before, the unit has its quirks, but it's probably the most reliable working unit that Lite-On has put out so far. It may not have the Easy Guider that the others possess, but it's reliable. I've had mine since Christmas and have used it extensively and it hasn't had to be repaired yet!! Think about it!!!

Good recorder. Quality is very good. If you are having problems with it. I recommend that you do a restore to default to correct the problems.

It has a DV input. Very useful for digital camcorders.

New firmware flash:

http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download_dvd.htm

Download and un-zipped the file and burned to a cd. Worked flawlessly. I have no idea what the update does, but hopefully it will correct some of the known issues.

For those who have trouble flashing, be sure to name it Mediatek (case sensitive) and burn the files to the disc but not the folder. This is my second firmware flash, and I've had no problem doing it.

I've now burned nearly 100 dvd's without any problem at all. My clock has been running fast, and I hope this fixes the problem. I don't use the timer; my primary use is in transferring vhs tapes and recording from my Tivo.

Unit works generally well. 3 problems noticed so far.
1- Clock runs fast. Gains couple of minutes every month.

Next 2 problems are intermittent.

2- Unit will forget to record a programmed event.

3- Powering up unit, even if there is a disk in the unit: it will show NO DISK ( Opening the door and closing solves this situation )

All above problems have been experienced on two different units.

Luckily, both units bought at Walmart, so no problem returning units.

This is the second day. I have been burning DVD+R discs all day long converting old VHS to DVS+R. Works like a champ!! Great value for the money. I bought it at SAM's. I asked why this was so much cheaper than the rest of the DVD's. The department head said this was a PC computer components maker getting into the video market with an unknown name. He told me SAM's is commited to customer satisfaction and has taken units back even to one year old if satisfaction isn't there. I was sold on this. So far this unit is proving to have ease of use. I would recommend this to anyone. Longterm ----- time will tell. I was reading reviews at Amazon.com for machines three times the price and I came to realize that price is no guarantee to having a nice running machine. I read a lot of sad stories of other brands that rather scared me from buying via the mail and having long waits for a new machine if things were not right. This is why I shopped locally and bought at SAM's.

After buying this recorder from Sams for $140,I have used it for about 3 months with no problems. I have copied home movies from vhs and recorded from cable TV. So far so good. Lite-on brand is well know for their PC burners. Even though this recorder uses DVD+R,RW is ok with me. The copies I have made all work on 3 dvd players that I own. Some of the older dvd players have trouble playing but most newer ones are more compatiable. Good product for the money.

In response to the Guy who says the door wont open and the unit just says Hello. You have to use the video composit out to view the setup menu. The COAX will not work. The door will not open until you have completed setup.

I don't have any good or bad things to say yet about this deck as I only bought it yesterday. I had no problem hooking it up or doing several test records with excellent output. I have both a phillips and sony dvd player that see the DVD+RW just fine.

Alot of the lockup and freeze problems people encounter may be related to heat. This is a small windows embedded computer. Whats happens to your system when the CPU fan quits turning? I plan on installing a fan in mine, right now I have it in a well ventalated area. I recommend others trying this to see if this fixes any of thier problems.

Update on earlier post. When I did the initial flash on the unit to correct some issues, as others reported also, nothing seemed to happen at all. I recently flashed another of my Lite-On pc dvd drives, and, as always, a flashing screen came up. So, I decided to try flashing again, and, this time, I got a screen prompting me to continue or abort the flash process. This didn't happen before as others reported. When I proceeded, the flash process was exactly as I expected to proceed as with my other drives; when it finished, I got a screen saying so. Afterwards, the unit does seem to work better, and 20 of 20 dvd+r discs since have been perfect. I also haven't seen the off-tint on the recordings as others have reported.

I have also discovered that there remains a quirk that I don't understand, but I can suggest other users try this. After the disc is initialized, select the input source to what you want even if the default is set to the input you want. For some reason, it seems that this is needed. Before I found this quirk, the unit did occasionally say there was no signal even though it was set to the desired input by default and there was a signal being fed to it. I'm hoping this will be corrected in a future flash. Lite-On has supported my drives very well for the past couple of years.

I still have the clock problem; it does gain time, but I don't use the timer. I also still find the remote's range somewhat limited, but it does seem better after the flash.

I use the unit only to record programs off my Tivo or to copy vhs tapes to dvd. It does very well with both of these.

For those who still have the units and reported the flash process not appearing to be done, try it again. Mine clearly did the operation in the manner expected, and if it didn't do so for anyone, it probably didn't flash.

I'm getting good results for my use, and the price is still unbeatable. If it fails, I did take the 3 year package from Sams, and that company has excellent customer support.

Absolute garbage. I bot 3 and they all freeze, lock up in various modes of operation. Tried to do the firmware update and none of them will recognize the disc (all 8 of them). Liteon will only supply the update if you send them a blank CD AND a prepaid return mailer! Two have loud static in the audio at random times - no predicting and it deos not show up untill after the disc is recorded.

I received the Liteon 5101 from Walmart for XMAS and was initially pleased with it. Unfortunately the clock gains 20 seconds per day! And that means I have to keep changing it once a week which is a PIA.

After about a month of recording shows, I realize everything has a green tint to it. Arghh! I contacted LiteOn by phone and they admit a "small" percentage of these units have this problem. They recommended I RMA the unit back to them or return it to the store.

I would have noticed this green tint sooner but it also appears on the live signal so it is not just when viewing the recorded DVD's. I'm using RCA cables directly from a satellite receiver. When the cables bypass the LiteOn and goes directly into the TV, the green tint goes away.

So I'd recommend anyone with this model to flip back and forth between the signal from the LiteOn and Cable/TV to see if they also have a green tint.

After 2 - 3 months, the unit was showing problems. I updated the firmware, but to no avail. I'm currently contacting their tech support and I'll try to post how that goes. It seems I'm not the only one. I'm getting disappointed after the long time it took to reply to my e-mail, the long expected wait for their tech support line, and the difficulty to find info on their player on their website.

This was the first DVD Recorder that I bought and thought that I could move DVD recording off of my PC and that we could get rid of our VCR.

I was very disappointed with this DVD recorder, that I took it back to Sam's.

Here are the problems that I found:
1) Interference with the tuner, so much that I was not going to use this unit to record from cable.
2) Remote had to be within 10 feet of the unit and was hard to use because you have to point it just right at the unit.
3) The remote has a lot of buttons, which tend to make it more complicated.

Back to the store this unit went. I finally ended up with a RCA DRC8040N and so far has been very happy with it.

Picked this up at Sams ($140) to use with my DVR. I've burned everything off the DVR successfully. The firmware flash was done as mentioned by others, and it was apparently successful; as others reported, it seems to do nothing initially, but then it does its job. I don't use the timer and cannot comment about it. My clock does gain time, but that isn't an issue in my application. My only complaint is about the remote's limited range.

I use Ritek dvd+r discs and the copies are generally excellent with only an occasional pixelation or sound glitch. Overall, the quality is better than that which I was getting by using my pc to capture and burn from the DVR likely due to the capture card I was using in the pc.

I bought this after having excellent results with Lite-On pc dvd burners. The manufacturer has been good in making regular updates for the firmware on my pc burners, and I anticipate this will happen with the 5101, especially given the initial problems others have reported.

I have old vcr tapes that I'm now copying to dvd. This unit is working well for me for what I bought it to do.

Purchase the liteon 5151 at Walmart, great deal $200 Canadian. Unit froze all the time, I updated the firmware and reset the unit to default which solved most of my problems. Still had minor issue with frezing which I could live with. My biggest issue was the remote only had a 6 foot range, now that drove me crazy... I had no choose but to return the unit for a refund. I recieved the Liteon 5101 for Christmas. I was able to copy my wedding to a DVD. All worked well, but I would like to back up some of my older VHS tapes and put all my daughters "Little Bears" on one or two DVD's so I do not have to play "pop the tape." Can anyone tell me how to get past the copyright protection?

Comments:
Update to earlier posting. During the last week the LVW5101 just went haywire. It kept locking up. Tried timer recording, put blank disc in, unit recognized it as blank disc, set the timer, and got message to insert a different "recordable" disc when unit turned on to record. Also I get "unknown disc" when trying to load most disks. Will be taking it back to Sam's this weekend. Haven't decided if I will exchange or get my money back and get another ILO at Walmart.
