Guess I must've been unlucky with this one,and despite installing every firmware update it's still a piece of trash.

It detects & 'prepares' only approx. 6 out of 10 disks, whether they're authentic Taiyo Yudens,Ridisk,Rivision or whatever.

Those it spits out again are rendered useless for recording, even on the PC based DVD recorder,as it appears to put 32bytes...(yes you did read that correctly)of something or other on each disk.

If I'm stupid enough to eject a disk which appears to be properly prepared, prior to recording onto it,in order to play a pre-recorded DVD or whatever,it ALWAYS fails to recognise the supposedly prepared disk if it's placed into the recorder again, and just puts a ? in the TLH corner of the TV screen.

I now have about 30 useless disks, all with only 32bytes of whatever on them, and I've lost count of the number of disks that have supposedly recorded ok,then failed to finalise on this machine, usually getting to 29% then saying the disc is in the wrong format FFS !!!

Fortunately I've discovered that an app. called CDRoller can usually recover the file,(this m/c records a whole film into 1 huge vob file !!!)which can then be split using VOBedit & remuxed using IFOedit.

On the plus side,it has a pretty blue light when it's switched on,but I can't think of anything else in its favour right now.

Certainly this device the best!!!!

I tried:
Schneider DVDR HDD 160;
Thomson DTH8550E;
Xoro 5500;
LG HDR 589

The unique device which can copy DVD-HDD-DVD, at copying DVD-HDD is kept even navigation (menu)
The unique device which can is high-grade to edit records even made on others rekorder. (split - merge, hide chapters ) advertising will remove - easily!!!
The magnificent menu of management of the device
Quality of a picture - is indistinguishable from the original (quality above LP)
The best design of the case, the board
Practically silent
Divix Xvid - it is excellent
avi/mpeg-4 reads 80 % (on reads old codecs at me their and the computer does not read)

It is the best device I put 10 points

I really like the player, except it does not seem to take many older .avi/.mpg files (don't know version) and short "interrupted" clips. I haven't found/seen a single player that can take all .avi and .mpg files you throw on it though... Really annoying! Why can't the stationary players be as good as computers???

Does anybody know if the DV input (Firewire) can be used for Portable HDD as well?

Final bug report:

No AC3 audio support

No widescreen xvid playback except in letterbox

Intermittent vertical stripes on XVID playback, mostly associated with widescreen NTSC video

Annoying DV onscreen controls cannot be removed from monitor during DV playback (though they don't get recorded.) You have to tape the DV input then play it back to watch it clean.

Unequivocally this machine the best!!!!

I absolutely freely copy protected DVD films on HDD. For this purpose it is necessary to choose zone DVD - 0.
Really wonderful machine.
One lack. During record of one film there is no opportunity of viewing of another. (such it is possible for example at Schneider DVDR HDD 160).
This machine deserves the highest estimation.

This machine is BRILLIANT !!
Had mine of about 3 months now and it seems to do what it says on the box... no problem.
Cost me £299 from Ideal World shopping channel (saw it quite by chance while channel hopping) and just HAD to have it !

It was simple to set up, has produced great results (so far) and makes life much easier than using all sorts of software on the computer, then finding you have guffed it up by using a wrong format etc and made stuff in-compatible with other equipment...ACE for a less than competent teccy !!

I have not tried every feature yet but its doing everything that I have tried with my limited capabilities so far !

Nice idea from Lite-on is the firmware updates, so one can iron out any problems should they arise, not to mention keeping the machine up to date (nice)

Finally.. If one could get around the copy protection feature, this machine would score 10 out of 10 !.. it would be fantastic to be able to keep a few favourite films and clips on the hard drive for instant access !
(I'm sure someone somewhere on the Internet will come up with a hack sooner or later.... here's to hoping anyway)!!

Over all, I really rate this machine and would recommend it to everyone !!

Andy (Oxford UK)

Overall quite good. The recording isn't quite as crisp as the original digital satellite tranmission so it doesn't match up to my DV recorder for quality, even on teh high quality setting. But it's acceptable nevertheless.

As I mentioned XVID playback is jammed into 4:3 mode so if it encounters a widescreen xvid it letterboxes it. It also has some faint vertical colored stripes on the screen for some widescreen XVIDs I've played (which aren't there on PC playback) though not all. The first unit I bought made an annoying high pitched whine but the replacement worked OK.

So reasonable value for money but if you care about XVID playback quality as a priority then this machine definitely isn't for you.

One big problem with this recorder I've already discovered.
My Home video burned in Verbatim DVD-R 8x and 16x not play in this machine.
If my home video is burned in Verbatim DVD-RW 4x then play good.
If my home video is burned in Verbatim DVD+R DL 4x then play good.
The HQ quality is 9500 bitrate, that bitrate is excesive, 8000 is the best quality for source miniDV and TV aerial or cable signal.
I return my Liteon 5055 GDL+ If the play problem with verbatim DVD-R continue.

Had this about a week now, played everything I have thrown at it so far, (all my old recordings +/- and my newer +DL's by various manufacturers), went for this rather than the 5045 as I had heard that it was a lot less noisy - which is true as it you cannot hear it, (unless you stick your head on it).
Recording couldn't be easier with the easy guider system.

Anyone know of a method or hack to override / turn off / circumvent the apparent inherent Macrovision that prevents the copying of original discs to the hard-drive? Would love to hear of any advice, suggestions. Thanks

I have only one question:
Is there some remote control build in to switch channels on digital satellite receivers? If so, I would run and buy it. I got DVB-S, have no DVB-T or DVB-C... so this would be a nice feature, otherwise I had to switch channel before it would record the right program... had that before with my old VHS recorder ;)

Thanks for answers (at best by email :) )

As i was buying my first DVD recorder (never mind HDD recorder) i thoroughly searched the web before buying & this one looked a great deal. I needed a large storage HDD, a recorder that would write on all types of media and divx/xvid playback. This one lives upto all my expectations!!!
The menu's/functions are easy to understand even for a novice like me. Recording to Disc/HDD are simple step by step presses on the remote. Easy to setup, easy to set the timer etc... Also recording from HDD-Disc/Disc-HDD & editing is a doddle!
Having only owned it for 2 days i havent had time to try all of it's functions/formats/media types etc and it will probably take me weeks if not months to test them all, but everything i need it for & everything i've tried so far works perfectly!
There are 6 different recording modes...HQ (High Quality)/ SP (Standard Play) / LP (Long Play) / EP (Extended Play) / SLP (Super Long Play) / Just Fit (Variable).
HQ, SP & LP all offer excellent quality recordings. EP & SLP are roughly similar to the quality you get with Divx, Xvid or SVCD (give or take) but both are still well watchable, and considerring you can fit around 320 hours of SLP video on the 250gig HDD or 220 hours EP you cant grumble. Just Fit...yet i have to try, but i think it utilises the remaining space left on the Disc/HDD and fits the best quality recording within the remaining space using the HQ-SLP modes (highest quality possible within the remaining space). User Manual for this model explaining all it's features etc are available from the Liteon Website at: http://www.liteonit.com/DC/english/download.htm

Only a couple of minor problems i've noticed with this machine are:
1) while recording on the HDD you are unable to watch a DVD at the same time (maybe this is normal with all DVD/HDD Recorders???).
2) thers dosent seem to a child lock? so while recording the little one can press stop. (if anyone knows different please let me know).

After finding the player i wanted i had a little trouble finding a supplier within the UK which had this player in stock. The only available company which had this in stock (at this time) were www.amazon.co.uk at a great price of £299.99 + £5 postage, sent via Parcelforce 24HR. (I ordered it on the wednesday & recieved it Friday morning).
As bratgirl said in her comments...This player will do just about anything! and at only £300 (GBP) & with a 2 year manufactures warranty you will be lucky to find better!!! As for reliabilty issues...only time will tell, but if i find any faults i will be sure to update on this site. In the meantime i would HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!! I would rank it a minimum of 9/10, would be a 10 but nothings perfect right?

TO ADMIN: SORRY, I KNOW THIS IS NOT A MESSAGE BOARD AND THAT YOU DO NOT WANT MESSAGES LIKE THIS. BUT I DID TRY TO EMAIL THE INFO TO HIM ALREADY TWO TIMES AND THE SENDING FAILED, SO THIS WAS THE ONLY OTHER POSSIBILITY.

SORRY.
***************************************************
hello max! your email address does not work.

i have already answered some of your questions in my report on videohelp.com. maybe you didn't understand everything, so i will try again. :)

1) Is it possible to load non-protected DVD on HDD and back?

YES. I explained that in the report:

"It can copy an image of an unprotected DVD from disc to HDD and back. Playing it on the HDD is exactly as playing direct from the DVD, with all menus and features."

2) Is it possible to edit (delete hide advertising) in television broadcast written down on HDD?

YES. I explained that in the report:

"Edit out commercials easily, split and/or join/rejoin (merge) video files effortlessly."

You can also join video files together, so when you cut out the commercials, you can put the film together again. BUT you cannot connect two recordings that are of different speeds. and you cannot put a recording on the same disc with xvid/divx on it.

to make a vcd or svcd, i think it's only possible to do it directly to a disc when it is recording.

3) Is it possible to write down on DVD R/RW television broadcast edited on HDD?

YES. after you edit on the HDD you can write it to CDR/RW or DVDR/RW.

4) Does the clock keep the time, in short-failure of power supply?

YES.

5) Is it possible to change thumbnails (on HDD and DVD RW)?

On HDD yes. On DVDR/RW i don't think it's possible. i'm not sure. perhaps if you don't finalise the disc - MAYBE it's possible. i have not tried this. I think it's not possible to edit films when it's on the disc, but you can copy it to the HDD again to edit ot change the thumbnails. and also, you CANNOT edit DivX or Xvid on the disc or HDD. but you can copy divx/xvid to the hdd.

6) Is it possible to create folders for Divx and mp-3?

No. I wish it was possible, but it isn't. Also, unfortunately, it does not show "folders" on the screen. it only shows the files that are in the folders. i mean about films. for example, if you have folders on a disc with divx/xvid in it, it will not show the folders. it will only show the file names. but when you are playing an xvid/divx film in a folder, you can see the folder name when you look at the film info on the screen.

i don't know about mp3 because i don't play music on a dvd player. i have a stereo that plays mp3. but i think it probably does not show "folders" for mp3. perhaps this will be possible with a firmware update in the future.

7) Is it possible to rewind Back/Forward (x2. x4. x8, x16) film Divx?

Yes, I think those are the speeds, but the manual does not show this and the screen only says 1, 2, 3, 4 for speeds. I would like it to to go back/forward like a normal dvd or vhs tape, but it doesn't. i have other dvd players that do this, but not this one. perhaps this will be possible with a firmware update in the future.

also, i think the speeds for dvd and hdd recordings are x2, x4, x8, x16, x32. hdd recording jump in 10 second pieces, but dvd is like normal back/forward.

8) Is it possible to load non-protected film Divx on HDD and back?

Yes, I explained that in my report:

"It can copy DivX/XviD/MPEG-ISO/MPEG VCD/SVCD/MP3/WMA from/to CD+/-R/RW, DVD+/-/R/RW (including Dual-Layer DVD+R/RW DL)."

9) Is it possible to load non-protected JPG or BMP picture on HDD and back?

Yes.

10)Is it possible to look picture (JPG or BMP) simultaneity play mp-3?

The manual says it is possible, but i didn't try it because i don't listen to music on a dvd player. i have a stereo. and i don't have any pictures and i don't have a camera.

*********

so i hope you understand everything now. it really is a wonderful machine. like you said it's a miracle machine. i didn't find any other one like this. i think it's the best one right now. maybe in a few months there will be others like this - or better - but i did not want to wait.

i'm sure there are some things i don't know yet because i didn't try everything yet. but i'm very, very happy with it. hopefully some firmware updates in the future can make it do more things.

i hope you get this machine. like i say in the report, it will do almost anything you want it to do. honestly!

have fun!

This is absolutely the best player and HDD recorder I have tried - and I've tried many. I've had Elta, Scott, JVC, and no-name brands. This newest model from Lite-On (in Europe) outshines all of them by far.

Firstly, it has a massive 250 Gigabyte hard drive (HDD), which can record/copy/store up to 325 hours of video (SLP recording speed). Recording speeds (DVD) are HQ/SP/LP/EP/SLP (and "Just Fit" which I haven't tried).

It can copy DivX/XviD/MPEG-ISO/MPEG VCD/SVCD/MP3/WMA from/to CD+/-R/RW, DVD+/-/R/RW (including Dual-Layer DVD+R/RW DL).

Manual does not state if it plays DVD-RAM or not. It might be possible because the manual also does not mention if it plays XviD, but it does. Before I bought the machine, I confirmed XviD playability with Lite-On via email - and it works!

Also manual does not state if it plays/records dual-layer DVD-R/-RW DL, but it might.

It plays MPEG-4 (DivX/XviD) but NOT MP4, OGG, Matroska, WMV, Quicktime, RealOne audio/video.

You can create a VCD/SVCD on CD+/-R/RW from recordings.

It can copy an image of an unprotected DVD from disc to HDD and back. Playing it on the HDD is exactly as playing direct from the DVD, with all menus and features.

Copy from/to other players (HDD/VHS/DVD recorders) using composite, SCART or S-video.

Edit out commercials easily, split and/or join/rejoin (merge) video files effortlessly.

Has "Showview/VPS+/VIDEO+ Plus" features.

16 recording timers - plus daily/weekly/monthly settings.

Time-shift feature: record and play at the same time.

HDD disc cleanup feature.

HDD defragment feature.

Finalise disc feature so they can be played on other dvd players.

Set-up and all other menus are extremely easy to use and understand. It even has warning/confirmation messages in case you make a mistake, like accidentally clicking "delete" will popup a confirmation warning message.

Create custom thumbnails from video.

CODE-FREE
Can be made Region Code-Free with this hack which seems to work with most Lite-On players/recorders (as I've seen it posted here several times for Lite-On players):

ENGLISH Region free hack:
1)Press "Setup" on remote.
2)Scroll down and highlight "Exit" (bottom box in menu).
3)While "Exit" is highlighted enter 2,9,6, and 0 and press "Enter".
4)A hidden menu pops up and you can select your region.
5)Select "region free"
6)Exit Set-up menu
Player is now Region Code-Free.

GERMAN
1)Taste «Setup Menu» drücken
2)Cursor auf «EXIT» bewegen
3)Zahl «2960» eingeben
mit «ENTER» bestätigen
4)Pfeil nach Rechts bewegen
5)Position «Codefrei» auswählen
6)Setup-Menu verlassen
Player is now region Code-Free

The above codes were copied/pasted from hacks posted here for other Lite-On players. It works!

DON'T FORGET TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE LATEST FIRMWARE!

ENGLISH FIRMWARE
http://www.liteonit.com/DC/english/download.htm
ENGLISH FIRMWARE INSTALLATION GUIDE:
http://www.liteonit.com/DC/english/download/udcp.htm

Sorry, I don't know where to find firmware in other languages. Manuals can be downloaded in Englis, Dutch, French, Spanish at the same url as above.

If you have the money to invest - approximately US$500 (I paid $495) - this is THE player to have. It will do just about anything you want it to do. Honestly!
