I have owned this unit from new since 2005.
The DVD drive failed on it and I returned it while the 2 year warranty was still valid, as detailed by "Bill" as per comments on here.
The drive stopped working again and I was about to junk the unit. Then I saw a how to replace it guide here:
http://ccgi.mgillespie.plus.com/liteon/smf/index.php/topic,4853.0.html
(This forum is pretty well "dead" but all the info is still available)
Since then the burner has performed faultlessly. And the 5045 is used most days now with a through the aerial digi box to scart.
I also found that the hdd in this unit is readable on a Windows PC, again from this site, I take the lid off the liteon and connect a USB adaptor from the hard drive to my laptop to archive and covert any programmes I want to keep, again from this site, there is a link to one of the user's guides:
http://tinyurl.com/2x744k
It is a bit dated, but even a numpty like me could follow it. This eliminates having to tranfer stuff to the PC using the burner.
Hope this helps anyone trying to get a bit more use and life out of a 5045. |

Hello to all with frustrations with the LVW-5045.
I just about put my foot through mine tonite after trying to record to dvd-rw(no luck),dvd+rw(which I ran out and purchased...no luck again), then tried my old stack of previously working dvd-r's and now they wouldn't work now either, so after a little tantrum,I gained my composure and decided to disassemble it.I removed the drive and tried connecting to my Mac(figuring I would just transfer all of my shows onto my computer's drive and proceed from there) but no success there(still would like to find a way to transfer directly off of the drive and onto my Mac's internal drive). I then proceeded to disassemble the dvd drive to clean the lens.Luckily I own a decent stereo microscope that I use when cleaning and repairing all kinds of goodies(cameras, electronics etc.).If you can't get access to a scope, at least a decent magnifying glass or loupe or ?possibly a digital camera with a macro lens(snap a picture and zoom in)...it is essential that you get a real close up look at the lens as it may not look dirty to the naked eye.
So I checked the dvd's optical lens under the scope and saw there was a fair amount of dust and grime(?grease) on the lens.Used a lint free chamois swab and alcohol(99% not 70%) to rub it down gently while viewing through the scope(vision is blocked while wiping). After a few wipes(keep a tiny amount of alcohol in a small glass to clean the swab of any accumulated grease/grime between wipes)most of the crap was gone. A little bit of compressed air to blow away any little hairs remaining and she looked pretty clean to me.Reassembled everything and threw in a dvd+rw and low and behold it worked! Tried a dvd-rw and it is currently copying in the machine right now as I am typing. At first I wasn't too optimistic about the cleaning but once again I was wrong.Keep it clean, crystal clean! and it may just work for you. |

Bought in Sept 2005 and untill now it has worked satisfactorily.
The Menu 'bounce' is a pain but as was suggested to me, just point remote away helps.
But it now seems to have an aversion to playing Region 4 disc (my area)
It has been on Region 'FREE' for most of its life and has happily played 'Burnts', Regions 1,2 & 4 untill yesterday, (21 June 2008)
Put in a Region 4 disc and it seemingly takes forever to finaly show 'Invalid Disc'. Even when I change the Region code back to 4, there is a 1 in 5 chance it will not play that or any other region 4 coded disc's.
Of course I have cleaned the disc's and tried several but with no success.
I read other reports of UK/US users experiencing problems with the player but none with it refusing to play a specific region.
The last firmware update for Australia is 2006 which I have done.
Based on other comments I am now looking to see if I can find a replacement DVD player for the unit if it becomes obvious that it has failed.

When i got this machine i was very impressed with the features. Since then it has become an increaing nightmare with the DVD player gradually refusing to accept different types of disk to playback. Now it as good as unusable. The hard disk side is mostly ok with a few glitches when you try and edit files but the dvd side is awful. I have had increasing problems for about 9 months now having owned the machine for 2 years and 11 days. Then i discovered that this product has a 2 year warranty in the uk. Having only just missed it and had increasing problems for the last 9 months i rang liteon and explained it to them. As soon as they realised that it was out of warranty (albeit 11 days) that was it. No help at all. Lots of sympathy - finally they suggested i changed the drive myself! I then emailed them to suggest they might reconsider and included a link to this thread. I pointed out that it must be a design fault to have so many people with the same problem. I also asked for contact details of their MD who might be interested in the bad press his company was getting. A couple of days later i had an email back asking for purchase details etc. I replied and a couple of days got a simple email saying sorry it is out of warranty! No contact details for MD!
Does anyone know where we stand legally with this recurrent problem so many of us have experienced?
In short DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE and based on their customer service do what i will now do and stay clear of Liteon products altogether. |

It seems to me that if its the DVD burner that's failing (mine has now completely died), that should be replaceable.
Does anyone know where to purchase replacement parts? I know that people refurbish units, can't this one be? I want to do it myself, as to pay someone $200 to do it is ridiculous.
Please let me know if you know -- where to buy replacement parts for the LiteON 5045??? |

The 1st example I purchased had a duff internal clock, so timer recordings couldn't take place. I had it swapped-out and got a second example with a better build date.
Note that updating the firmware will see your settings and channel definitions scrubbed. The process is reasonably easy - I use a Mac, so I burn a CD with the firmware patch file using ISO9660 format and Roxio Toast. I'm currently on firmware 203.
It has an intuitive interface for everything other than timed recordings - whereupon things start getting a bit dicey. I've found the best thing to do it set up a 1 minute recording session at the end of defining your timer-based schedules. You will then be prompted to turn off/on the recorder - why I dunno, must be some kind of Windows thing (I use Apple) with a Microsoft back-end. With the recorder reset you can be confident your programmes will be recorded.
Recording to hard-disk is a doddle. Just keep the disk defragged once in a while. I have my LVW5045 attached at the front phono plugs to an external security camera - it works fine and has done for over a year. However noise from the Front AV channel seeps over into other channels (such as the SCART interface) which is just poor design.
I don't have cable, just a UK Freeview setup. The tuner quality is pretty dire - but I find that analogue TV broadcast quality is better than anything other than HD broadcasts in the UK. Using a combination of the Freeview tuners timer and the LVW's I can be sure of being able to catch anything I want. Not having twin tuners is a bind, but only for those rare occasions when you want to watch on Freeview and record something else on another Freeview channel.
Recording to DVD is a nightmare. Actually anything to do with the DVD is a nightmare. Many commercial DVD's don't play - so as a result I've purchased a £20 DVD player that is attached to the spare SCART of the Freeview tuner. This kinda defeats the idea of the 5045 being a complete solution-in-one-box. A cheapo £20 DVD player performs what it should be doing as a minimum. When I did manage to get DVD's to play, the drive made a hypersonic racket.
Recording to DVD is worse - finding media that the unit accepts is one thing - but don't expect the same media to be accepted the next week! As it is only 4 x media appears to (intermittently) work, and as the unit gets older that is harder to find. On the few occasions I managed to record from hard disc to DVD the copies played fine. However the process is so full of doubt because of the units touchy attitude to media that I don't bother.
So...I ended up with a reasonable HD recorder, and an outstandingly useless DVD recorder. The numerous interfaces are useful, but the entire concept of the product (to replace a VHS recorder) fundamentally failed. I still have a VHS recorder and still use it on occasions (I never had a problem selecting VHS media brands, in 20 years usage!)
I could of course return the unit (it has a two-years manufacturers warranty) but I wouldn't get a useful credit and in the end I have constrained my usage of the LVW to avoid using the DVD recorder technology at all. Lite-On of course committed long-term commercial suicide with the 5045 - so many customers have experienced bad tmes with theirs its unlikely Lite-On will exist in 10 years time. I wouldn't buy another Lite-On again (I've chosen to avoid them for two other purchases in the last 12 months) wouldn't recommend them and, although the LVW-5045 was supposed to represent ground-breaking technology at a new price-point, I have to regard the product as a lemon. |

An update to my report September 06, 2005
The recorder had worked ok until the DVD drive went faulty, discs made on it were unplayable, stopped recognising disc etc, many people seem to have had these problem.
I was going to replace the drive myself until I found out that here in the UK Liteon have a 2 year guarantee on this unit.
I phoned them up they arranged carriage etc and the unit was returned to me within 8 days with a new drive fitted.
It has worked perfectly since.

I'm facing problems since 3 months ago when using blank DVD-R midia. It does not recognize them anymore. I've tried several brands 8x (Samsung Pleomax, QVI and Sony) and one 4x (TDK) without success.
Last month I forgot the unit open and my kids broken the tray by accident then I decided to replace the drive by a LG DRU-820.
I had to tweak the mechanics a little bit to fix it but finally it is working...but...no way to recgonize DVD-R or DVD+R media.
The LG unit works fine in my computer therefore my conclusion is that some component in the main board is deteriorating after 6 months.
All DVD+RW and DVD-RW work fine. I think I will survive until I buy my next device.
For sure it will not be LiteOn. |

Having just discovered this site I was saddened to learn that many others have experienced the same problems I am having with this God Aweful machine, and it's zero Technical Support.
As others have said it was fine for the first 6 months, and produced some good results. Then it started to get very unreliable - particularly when it came to copying from Hard drive to DVD.
Some days it is OK, then other days it just refuses to recognise that there is a blank DVD in the tray. Even if that blank is from the same pack of blanks that it quite happily recognised and recorded to - yesterday. DUH????
Do NOT buy this machine - it's rubbish and seriously unreliable.

I've experienced some of the same problems as others. My unit was awesome for the first few weeks and then it started to go south. At first it did everything as promised. I bragged about it to my friends.
Then, it started to go south. The problems were in the copy of files fron HDD to DVD. At first they were easy and high-quality. Then I started having problems with the initialization of new disks. It finally ended up in this endless initialization that ended with the disk being ejected.
But wait! These disks were from the same stack that worked so well before! Huh?
Come on ... These are Sony 8x from Wallmart.
Is this a problem with hardware? Software?
What really scares me is that we are seeing a product that is so great out of the box, and then seems to have some kind of clocked in schedule for working its'way into the dumpster.

I bought the Lite-On Stand alone LVW 5045 in March of 2005. The first unit was finicky. The DVD player/recorder didn't always recognize empty media, nor recorded media. Whether commercial or not. In fact, in all three of the recorder/players that I've had from this company -- each has had a fine hard drive, but lousy DVD recorder than gets worse and worse with time. The company now tells me to use max 4x DVD media. Where can one find that easily? So, I have to order all media on line? Because most stores now carry 1-16x or 1-8x. Why doesn't this player work with whats out there?
I finally returned my first unit for "repairs." The company sent me back SOMEONE ELSES unit (and they only returned a unit at all after I complained about it taking more than six weeks to fix it -- I had paid for overnight shipping to return it to them!)! The "returned" unit had someone elses video on it, and it was pretty beat up as well. I checked and yept it ha a different serial number.
I finally found the number to a corporate manager at Lite-On. He said that he'd send me a new unit and empty media to make up for all of my losses. He promised to "test" the machine for 2 days.
In the last month, not only is the DVD NOT recognizing or preparing new empty media, it won't read previously burned (and corrected closed) media burned on this machine! Anytime that it does choose to "record" a DVD -- it plays with skips through out.
I cannot believe I wasted $400, plus hundreds more in phone calls for support and shipping charges.
I really would like a refund! But now its nearly impossible to reach anyone who can help.
I knew that the Lite-On Standalone LVW 5045 machines manufactured previous to Jan 2005 had problems, so when I actually went and looked on the back of this latest machine (the third one), imagine how shocked I was to see that the "new" machine that the company sent me was manufactuered in Nov of 2004! This unit is older than my original purchase!
Why didn't they just send me a model manufacted after the Jan 2005 date? Now, I'm way past my warranty.
There is little good to say about this unit. By the way, they lied about sending me "empty media" to make up for my losses. Do not buy this machine! |

Quality is excellent. Better than my old Panasonic E50H. It records DVD+R(W),-R(W), CD-R and CD-RW. It's complete. But...
I have same problems with schedules on Saturday and Sunday. If I don't turn it on on Saturdays and Sundays, schedules on those days don't start. And they start on next day. It's a firmware error, but Liteon tells me to call the reseller, but I bought it from a US store. |

DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE. IT IS ESSENTIALLY UNSTABLE.
On purchase, my inital impressions were favourable. I had a few minor niggles: the menu system is cumbersome, it can't re-quantise files to fit when copying from HDD to DVD, and it makes a lot of mechanical noise when the hard drive is spinning (and be aware that if the timer is set to record a future programme, it keeps that drive spinning 24hrs a day). Generally, though, it seemed to do what was asked of it.
Then gradually, week by week, it started getting flakier and flakier. The biggest problem was that on playing back files from the HDD, it would freeze at a random chapter point and refuse to play any further. Hiding or deleting the errant chapter marker just caused the freeze-up to move back to the previous one. I lost several important programmes this way, including two crucial episodes of HEIMAT. I was not happy!
In an effort to cure the problem, even though the HDD was mostly free space, I tried de-fragging. This made the situation even worse. I ended up having to delete everything and start again.
Then I made my biggest mistake: I took LiteOn's advice and downloaded a firmware upgrade (0201). I installed it as per their instructions, and at the end of the process, the machine announced that the upgrade had been successful.
Result? The previous problems are still there, and now, the LVW-5045 refuses to play any of the discs I have authored using DVD-R media on my Mac. (These are finalized discs that played perfectly well on this machine before the "upgrade", and on every other machine they're put into.) Bizarrely, the LiteOn mis-identifies them as UNfinalized DVD-RWs! So I am now in a posiiton where my only domestic DVD machine won't play 70% of my own disc library - thanks a bunch, LiteOn!
My lst attempt to fix matters was to use a DVD-drive lens cleaner. No improvement.
I emailed their support service with the above issues. Their reply completely ignored the HDD problem and on the subject of DVDs, exhorted me only to burn on media from the LiteOn "Recommended Discs" list. I AM burning on media from that list. Apart from that, their only suggestion was that I send the unit back to them for repair.
Unless I can get a definite fix for these problems (which I believe to be software/firmware based)and quickly, I shall cut my losses, i.e. remove the HDD for use in a computer and smash the rest of the thing to bits with a sledgehammer. |

| I Like this unit, however YOU should know the EDIT function (edit HDD recorded video before burning to DVD) and the hard drive is very flaky. Frequent lock-ups that can only be solved by unplugging from wall. Also recorded video shows that can not be accessed due to disk error. Unit has a defrag but no scandisk function. Yes I updated the firmware. Still flaky |

Noticed a new firmware upgrade on the Liteon site. Downloaded and installed version 201. BIG MISTAKE. Lots of lock ups requiring unplugging the player, trouble preparing DVD-R (which had worked perfectly before).
Luckily I could reinstall the 197 update (which has was no long on their web site but might be back) and everything returned to the previous set up.
I had installed the same update on a friend's lvw-5045 and had same problems there so it wasn't specific to my machine but might just be specific to the US update.
Make sure you still have your 197 disc before you try the lastest firmware update. (There were some good things, the editing responded much quicker and the remote seemed to operate better).

As a follow up to my previous post about copy clips from DVD (DVD+RW) to HD, there's a way to work around the problem until a fix is provided by liteon (I contacted the company). After recording a clip from DVD to HD, I switch the machine to HDD mode, record a few second from TV source, then I can transfer another clip from DVD to HD.

I have sucessfully used the following features of the the player:
. Timer recorder
. Time shift
. Copy from HD to DVD
. Play back pre-recorded DVD by another player
. Upgrade the firmware to the version 201
After copy a clip/chapter from pre-recorded DVD to HD, I had to turn off the player before I can copy another clip/chapter to the HD. I'll contact customer service again about the issue.
After created a DVD by the player, I wanted to make a copy of the disk by using my computer + DVD Shrink and Nero Recoder, but it was not able to read the disk. The DVD played fine on my computer though.
I wish that I can mark multiple chapters on the HD before issue the command to copy them to the DVD. A multi slot card reader would be nice also. MPEG4 & DL DVD would be a bonus. Well, maybe the next model would have those features.
So far, I'm happy with the recoder. I think that it will serve my need. |

| I really wanted to like this DVD Recorder but after having tried 4 of them I must say they are complete junk. Both units I tried that were manufactured in January 2005, sometimes recordings would become corrupt and unplayable after defragmenting the hard drive and both that were manufactured in February would record timer recordings on the wrong day. Updating to the 197 firmware made no difference. |

It's a very good recorder. I've found no bugs so far. Good thing is that the internal TV receiver swicthes automatically between NTSC and PAL-M so I can record broadcast TV in Brazil without transcoding.
I miss a speed selector button in the remote (only abailable in the setup menu) and a pause button on the front panel.
Navigation when you have more that 30 movies is a kind of slow.
Image quality is excelent.
Hidden region hack in the setup menu works perfectly.
