I had to send this back while under warranty twice to have a failed drive replaced. I learned that the reason why the drives fail is almost always due to lack of ventilation around the unit. If you keep them in a place where they can have plenty of air circulating around them - (mine is now housed in the middle shelf of a computer desk - the cheap ones on wheels, which I use as a TV unit) - they do not over heat and the drives are okay. However, if this unit is kept in a confined space in a TV unit for example, the drives almost always fail after a while. It's an object lesson for all DVD players/recorders, but this one seemed particularly temperature sensitive. If the disk drive starts to click, or comes up with 'FAIL' when you load even new disks that worked perviously, as with PC disk drives, it's probably 'the-click-of-death'. A friend who had the same model successfully changed the failed drive for a PC one (it was out of warranty) and it's been fine since.

After starting with the 5001, I had a few problems with it, so I upgraded to the 5005. My, what a major hastle. My advice to people out there is STEER WELL CLEAR!!!! If it was on the other side of the country, its still too close!!!!
I went through 5, YES 5, of these 5005 recorders all in a two month period and everyone failed! The worst was the 2nd one. Straight out of the box, set up and 24 minutes it failed to burn anymore. The best I got was 3 weeks then it failed too! After the 5th replacement, I basically gave up as all these seemed like failed products. All the supplier would do is exchange it for another one. With the 1st one, I recorded all my tapes to DVD+r, and all 76 disks FAILED!!!! It would burn them, but not be able to read them after the first time.
What a waste of $449!

In my opinion, the LVH-5005 is the biggest waste of money ever!

I have now purchased an LG dvd recorder and never even skipped a beat.

Recorder works great for dumping shows off of my DVR. Recently hacked for 3hr mode and macrovision free. 3hr mode works great, but still can't archive my kids old vhs tapes. Keep getting message 'protected content'. I've yanked the VCR from my rack for the the DVR, but now my kids cant watch their old movies. I had a 5001 sucessfully hacked until the drive fried up on me? Also, I'm hearing that I may jsut be able to replace the drive on the 5001? Is it as simple as it looks? I've taken it apart and gotten the old one out. I'd really like to get our vhs collection converted to DVD.

I've had several video recorders since they first came out. The best one by far has been the LiteON 5005 which I gave just a little over a hundred bucks while it was on sale and with rebates at CompUSA. Out of the box it worked fine and recorded to DVD plus and minus discs with no problem, from the cheap Princo to the highest price best quality I could find for some family videos just to be sure. All the discs I made over a year and a half still play back perfectly. Another nice thing is the fact that it records to cdr/w discs and for watching tv programs the slight downgrade in quality isn't that much of a bother for us, it's definitely better than a VCR ever was. This feature may not matter for most but we have a closet full of blank cdr and cdrw discs. In fact we have been so pleased with this unit we are considering buying the 5045 model for our living room to replace the Pioneer 510H that is in the shop more than it sits in the living room and we gave almost $700 for it at Good Guys. The only feature that I miss is there is no on-screen programming guide but for the price I guess you can't ask for everything.

A lot of features and a lot of burning problems.
Bought new DVD+RW and DVD+R disc's from PHILIPS. No DVD was burned correct. The most DVD's gave a FAIL error message. After reading some postings on the forum i tried to downgrade the firmware from the Lite-On 411s recorder using my PC. It didn't changed a thing. Because the recorder was out of the casing I did some cleaning. The lens was covered with a layer of dust. I cleaned the lens with some lens cleaning fluid. Put the recorder back where it belonged and tested the recorder. Wow it works again. I think that the heat and the dust gave the lens a thin layer that prevents good reading from DVD+R/RW disc's.

Used Liteon cd burner on my pc for some time and found them excellent, so after returning a Goodmans DVD recorder which was faulty to the shop after Christmas, I exchanged it for the Liteon. Initially I was very happy with it. After a few months of light use, mostly playing commercial DVDs and very little recording, I found my new recordings would skip when played back, in this or any other DVD player, and that my PC could not copy files from the dvd's to the hard drive. Playing a cd lens cleaner cd improved the skipping temporarily, but did not rectify it and the situation quickly returned to it's previous state. While it is still working to a fasion and has played anything I have thrown at it, I have opted to replace it with a different brand. The only media Ihave ever had it fail with is some really cheap unbranded DVD+R which my pc will not accept either. (If anyone wants some really crap dvd+r let me know!)

Since purchasing this Recorder I have backed-up about 80 VHS tapes and recorded from TV about 25 times, all without a problem except for 2 times. Those 2 times were caused by a defective DVD+RW disk that been used too many times.
The function that I liked most was when I found out that I could capture to CD the sound from a 24 channel sound Mixing board. The CD recorder that I was using quit working and as an emergency I hooked up the Lite-On and have been using it for this function for about 2 months.
I have found quite a few great features on the Recorder.

I spent USD279 from Chiefvalue. It worked at the begnining. If fact I just used it for few hours and then switch off and didn't use it for around 6 month. When I tried to use it again, I found the tray refused to open. Call the helpline, call the helpline ... (try it and you will find regret to buy that product), gave me this idea, that trick... all failed. I had to mail it to Seattle to fix it. It's changed for a used one. The tray could open! But the next day I found the picture signal split. Call, call, call... Oh man! I cannot imagin it how long you need to keep waiting for the technician to give you another stupid trick or explanation. I had to send it back again. Several months later, when I wanted to use it for a while, the tray stuck there again...
One of my friends bought a liteon dvd rw driver from compusa. It broke in one week.
I lost interest in liteon brand. No matter how you enjoy your machine.

How do I make the firmware work, how do I make 16x media work?
Does anyone have an idea?
Otherwise this recorder ist working great, never failed.

Re: replacing the DVD drive in Liteon 5005 with a newer Liteon drive. I just replaced a broken drive with the new Liteon IDE model SHM-160P6S (16x record) after flashing the newest BiOS on a Windows PC. It plays and records fine so far, haven't fully tested yet. I had trouble removing the old drive, broke the silver outer door cover off. Can the 5005 BIOS be hacked to record double-layer, or does the drive itself control the writing process?

Larry,,

You said the drive in the 5005 is easily replaced. I take it, then, that it has a standard IDE interface. Will any Liteon drive work? I've used Toshiba dvd readers in an APEX player. I did not know Liteon was build this way. I didn't want to break any seals and void warranties. Can you detail the advantages you've noticed with a replacement drive?

My first died, but after a bad firmware hack upgrade. Normally 5005 tolerant of this, but I tried a function at wrong time. Generally a breakthrough machine in dvd recording, especially considering firmware can be safely hacked to add another recording speed, and remove macrovsion protection. Although different drives are used, they all are pretty poor. Easy to replace with a better Liteon PC drive - and works fine with 5005 firmware - result is much more reliable burns, and more blank media tolerance.

In general, with this unit you should use the best quality media. Otherwise good chance that burn will have playback issues, although generally not fatal.
Note does not record DL media, but plays back at least +R DL, bitsetting DVDROM not required.

I am quite happy with this machine except for the noise factor. And then there are a couple of improvements that I would like to see:
I have finalized several discs only to discover that I forgot to add a title to the file that I had recorded.
I think it would be a good idea if Liteon added a step in the finalizing procedure: Once you hit the finalizing button, a prompt should come up reminding you to add a title and possibly showing the current default title. You could then go to the edit procedure where you can enter your title before returning to the finalizing procedure.
It would also be nice if there was a five-hour recording mode so that it would be possible to record an entire week's worth of one-hour episodes on one disc. The six-hour mode is not great; not even as good as recording on VHS in EP (6-hr.) mode. The improved quality of a five-hour mode would be a welcome addition to an otherwise great machine.
I liked that a CD-RW 700MB disc burned as a VCD contained almost 75 minutes of video. (minus 11 seconds.)
I was also surprised to find that a CD recorded by RealPlayer in RealAudio would play on this machine. None of my other DVD or CD players will do that except for the ones in my computer.

Bought this unit mainly because of low price, for Canadian $149 (after $30 discount)from Costco in Canada. I installed the hacked system firmware and the latest drive firmware. I only used it for 2 days, but quite satisfied with the unit. It is very easy to use, and I have successfully transferred 10 VHS movies onto DVD discs. I used single layer Memorex 4X +RW, Memorex 8X +R (made by Ritek) and Maxell 8X +R (made by Ritek) discs, at 2 hours and 3 hours recording speed, and so far haven't generated any coasters yet. Recorded discs can be played on a standalone Electrohome DVD player without any problems, except I couldn't fast forward or play backward at speed greater than 2X. The Liteon website could be a bit more useful if they tell the users of how to verify the version of the system firmware or the drive firmware, and a more clearer screens of burning the firmware on a CD disc (currently, the screens are fuzzy and some items are listed in Chinese language, as opposed to English).

The TV tuner, as other users have reported, needs some improvement for better tuning (I am using rabbit-ear antenna though).

Hope this unit last.

(I wrote a previous review, accidently under another name, but my opinion has since dropped.)
I keep having problems with unfinalized disks suddenly not being recognized, thus losing everything I recorded on them. Also, some individual recordings freeze after 2-seconds, and must be hidden and re-done. Lately though, I have had the recorder fail during the finalizing stage, again losing my recordings. I don't know if these can be read and recovered on a computer- I sure hope so!
I did read on another site a work-around, and so far this has been 100% reliable for me. That is to stick with +RW disks, and if you wish to copy to +/-R later on a computer and re-use the +RW. So far with +RW (Memorex) I have not lost a disk or a recording, and in-progress disks always play on my Sanyo player.
An interesting quirk on the Closed-Captioning. I was a bit concerned that it was stripping off the CC, as when I played back recordings there was no CC. Even when the video was simply passed through to the TV, the CC was lost. However, when I played back my recordings on the Sanyo, the captioning appeared on the TV! Apparently it can't play or pass the CC data, but it DOES record it. Odd...
I wish I could find another decent recorder in this price range, but I can't. So I just keep exchanging it for a newer manufacture date and hope for a good one some day! (This one is Dec. 2004, and a May 2005 just sold out but more should be in tomorrow.)

I am having trouble using my VHS recorder to convert and copy my PAL video tapes to NTSC DVD, using the LiteOn 5005 DVD recorder. The DVD recorder drops the picture about an inch, resulting in my having a black space across the top of the screen and my losing the bottom of the picture (the problem is particularly noticable with subtitled movies).

The place where I bought the DVD recorder says the problem is the VHS recorder -- something about it probably putting out a PAL 61 signal rather than a true PAL signal. The solution, they say, is to purchase a different multisystem VHS recorder.

Is this true, and if so, how do I know what VHS recorder will work properly with the DVD recorder?

Also, I used two different multisystem VHS recorders in creating the PAL tapes -- my original recorder died. Tapes created on the original recorder are the ones that literally drop lower on the TV screen. Tapes created on the current VHS recorder fill the entire screen, but they still are missing the bottom of the picture (by the way, when I bypass the DVD recorder and play any of these tapes on a multi-system TV, the picture appears in its entirety on the screen).

any thoughts, suggestions ...

There are quite a few problem with this unit, but the video quality is excellent. the first problem I notice is heat, you can feel the heat when in the play mode. Second, the unit hang up often. Power off won't solve anything. You have to unplug the cord to reset everything. 3rd, can't manualy set the chapter

DVD-RAM?
Comments:
I just bought it from Walmart $199 CAD + Tax.

Problems

1) When recording VHS, it encodes the audio as MPEG 2 - That format wont play on some old style DVD Players. Most brand names (panasonic / toshiba would encode as Dolby Digital 2 Ch)

2) Just one day after recording it stopped reading DVD-R disc that it recorded a night before. Have to eject and reinsert.

3) Same problem as number 2 with DVD+RW disc

4) When watching TV through this recorder, dims the color and the sound, my VHS records far better on a 6 Hour EP than this Lite-On does on a 4 HR Recording Mode

5) Firstly, it wont even record on a DVD+RW have to do the firmware update from Lite On Web Site

Have not tried doing audio CD from audio tape, will update if that thing works.

Thanks

I upgraded from LVW-5101 to LVW-5005.
LVW-5101 records on +R/RW only and the clock needed to be reset every other day.
LVW-5005 seems to work great, easy to set up and program.
One flaw: When I watch TV through the Recorder, the picture is not clear at all and fine tuning did not help.
Contacted customer service, but like most other reviewers, I will probably get no response.

For the price this model does everything I need.

I am interested in the lite-on as it in our price range and the primary reason is to record my Digi-8's from the camcorder to dvd or svcd's; our camcorder has a dv hook up and since this recorder has a dv outlet I am very courious if it records suitably. Has anybody out there been using this recorder for the same purpose as i would intend to do????
please email me with any info you may have regarding this issue... I have not bought it yet but am very interested in doing so....

Thanks
JT

Got this at local costco for 129.99+tax. This version does not have scart like older model. Installed hacked firmware right away to get 3 hr record mode and macrovision free. Transfer some old tape to DVD use the recorder in 6 hr mode and 3 hr mode. 3 hrs mode looks as good as the tape(original). 6 hr mode is accetable(depend how good the source), however, I notice the audio is out of sync of the picture around the 5th hr. 3 hr has no such problem. Anybody has this problem? I have not try the 4 hr mode yet. So far, I have no problem with finalize the disc, it work all the different type of DVD disc I have. The tuner seems works fine adn I don't see any green effect like other claim. This will earn me a 10 if not because of the 6 hr audio sync problem. Overall, this is a good machine for now.
