Machine good for price of £150 from Dixons. Major flaw is that on play back of recordings some 2 inches of the top is replaced by bar on tv screen and picture shifted down so that base 2 inches is cut off. This means subtitles recorded are removed so that recording foreign language movies rendered pointless. Does not do this for pre-recorded dvds. Really wish had tried known manufacturer and not purchased on internet- as, as noted Liteon do not have any cusomer service quality.

Lots of trouble ripping the DVD I have recorded. Somany programs end up with errors. Seems to play fine on lots of players. If you record Multiple files on 1 DVD,you will never read them.

VideoRedo seems like able to read without errors, but lots of blank images.

have two of these machines.the first one i bought was 5001b and was brill.the second one was the 5001,had probs with it,until i downloaded the updates, now it too is brill.
main reason for this post is that i didnt want to risk the hacks to enable me to record video that were coded,so spent £30 at aldi on a video sender set.set the system up and positioned the transmitter and receiver about a foot apart.now i can copy any video(or dvd)in whatever time the film runs for.much better than putting it onto the pc and taking umpteen hours to complete the job. the system works on any dvd recorder.hope this makes life easier fo you all.

cheers

digidark

As far as I can talk about it, after 2 days of intensive testing ( the seller promissed me that if I liked to return iot, I got 8 days from himn to test the aquipment ) I can opnly say, this recorder does vvhat it's build for: Recording DVD's.
I recorded on HQ and at EP, the EP 4 hrs mode gives a bit grey colored picture but still acceptable after 20 years of VHS;)
Okay the remote control is a bit spartanic nad you need some experience vvith burning dvd's ( finishing after recording and editing ), the manual seemd to be re- translated from Chinese to German and than from German into English but, as far I can see, no heating, no drops, no drips only the satisfaction of DVD quallity.

One question: Does anyone of you if I record a home dvd and send that one to, for example the USA, if it gives problems to play it in the USA because of the region limmitation? Or is the limmitation only for movies that you can buy in the shops or steal from the internet?
I mean vve have some friends there and like to use home dvd's for pleasure, to send them it is much cheaper as sending every time a mini dv.

About the price, it is pitty that the creators of this forum do not have more options, because of the bad rate of the US dollar, I paid in Euro's 189,--, that is about 225 US dollar

Regarding my earlier post I have now returned the unit back to Curry's as I was not able to obtain any support from Liteon either via email or phone. They do not have any UK support and I was not able to speak to anyone in technical at either their US, Taiwan or German office.

As stated a few times before, you do definitely get what you pay for and that is a whole heap of problems if you purchase this player.

The only good thing I can say about it is the picture quality was very good and the firewire connector was useful which is something I don't have on my new DVDR.

I've since paid an extra £30 and bought myself a Philips DVDR610 which is fantastic. I had a few issues with recording but it turned out to be a problem with the PBC which apparently is useless if you try and use it in the UK. I'll probably write some more about this player under its own listing.

An excellent recorder for the dosh, had to iron out those little niggles when i first bought it from curry's though. It reguarly produced coasters and become too hot to touch in places, so i opened it up and installed a small pc fan which sorted out my coater problem, never had one since no matter what disks i use, removed all macrovision, region coding and added the 3 hour record mode. All works flawlessly. I must admit i never record on anything over the two hour mode, if it stretches over this i'll pop another disk in. I back my dvd's up via another macrovision free dvd player and the scart input, no problems at all, and a lot quicker than dvd shrink. Guess i'm a lucky sod

Had the Liteon 5001(european version) for a few weeks
and so far, I am very pleased with the performance.

Recording from cable is a breeze and the picture quality is very good.My reason for posting these comments, is to mention the light horizontal banding I get when using the rooftop antenna. Earlier post suggested that it was interference from the motor. If this were true, it would affect all input signals. My solution was to thread the antenna lead through a ferrite ring a few times (or wrap it around an ferrite rod from an old radio).

It worked for me, I hope it does the same for those of you who have the same problem.

Bought at Heartland for $179, factory refurbished unit. You get what you pay for. Records fairly well, but occasionally locks up and has trashed several titles on disk. +R and +RW media replay well on Dell PC DVD drive, won't play at all on an older Toshiba standalone player.

Updated firmware to 1163 without problem. An inexpensive unit, and performs that way.

I've just purchased this machine today £149 from Currys

Tried the different recording modes. 1 and 2 hours where as good as source. I could watch a DVD recorded in 4hr mode quite happily, amd even the 6 hr mode was ok if I really needed to use it.

Have had 2 problems with it. Trying to view a dvd+rw using my Pioneer DVD player which I recorded in 2hour mode does not play the Audio, picture is fine.
DVD+RW looks blank when I try and play it using my PC.

Thought I'd try and download the latest firmware from Liteon but I got a page not found error trying to download the UK firmware.

If I can get my 2 problems sorted out then I'd be very happy with this Recorder. If I can't then I think it is possible going to have to go back to the store.

Purchased at Sam's Club for $140. Tried less than a day before repackaging for return. 2 fatal problems:

1. The built-in tuner was prone to interference in the form of light diagonal bands running across the screen. The bands seemed to be affected by the unit's drive.

2. +RW media from Ritek & Infodisc (both fairly high quality) would not play properly on Philips 642 and NEC 1100 (on PC). Seemed to play OK with minor glitches on Apex 5131.

On the plus side, it plays SVCD & MPGs on ISO with a very good image quality. Image quality at 2 hours speed was nearly identical to source. 3 hours speed was noticably softer.

But many more negatives. Remote has rudimentary controls & is weak - using at about 15 feet was dicey. Remote also behaved strangely - buttons pushed sometimes resulted in unintended actions.

Unattended recording sessions resulted in blank DVDs since the sessions did not close properly when capacity was exhausted.

MP3 on CDR sometimes locked up the unit in the middle of play.

I'll wait until something more robust becomes affordable.

Bought at Currys UK. £150
1st one was faulty (no VIDEO output)
2nd one works fine. brilliant for easy recording of VHS/ camcorder tapes.

Big problem with TDK +R, RW discs. They recorded OK, but WONT play on other Players, even my NEC 2500A DVD recorder.
Bought Philips & Packard Bell +R RW discs and these were perfect, played on anything I tried.

I've used this since December of 2003 to move TV shows / movies onto DVD for my brother who was in a nursing home. It's been a faithful performer and well worth the price.

I've seen reports of these running hot but mine have never gotten any warmer than various other DVD players I've owned.

I was so impressed by this unit that I bought the Lite On LVW-5005 model which reads and writes to everything except RAM and Dual Layer.

Pros
+Cheap at £150 from Currys in UK
+Excellent quality compared to VHS on 1hr and 2hr modes
+Remote is very simple (my wife liked not having many buttons! - may be a con to some, see earlier comments)
+Quiet (but see cons)
+On screen 'Guider' is very easy to follow
+Upgradable firmware
+Firewire input

Cons
-Runs very very hot as no fan (I was worried about putting my DVD's in for a long time)
-Unreliable with media. Out of 3 Philips DVD+RW, 2 failed to format, the other formatted but some of the recordings to it couldn't be played back. I had one Packard Bell DVD+RW that recorded without any problems.

Overall

A great shame that I couldn't get it to work reliably with the Philips DVD+RW disks that Curry's had on 'special' when purchasing the Liteon. Had they worked then I probably would have forgiven the hot running as it is very simple to use and the quality up to 2 hrs was very good (for me 4 hours was worse than VHS but others may disagree). I put in the latest firmware (1163?) but made no improvement with the Philips discs.

I returned, as I need it to work reliably in the living room where the family are less forgiving when the awaited episode recorded turns out to be a coaster!

Just got my first DVD recorder. Updated firmware according to forum from 1143-1163 using liteon website. Was initially unable to get .d11 file, however after changing last character on s/n from c to 8 was able to get this file. Applied hack file (.d11), now macrovision off, LP mode available, and region menu available to choose between free - 8. Hack applied for 3 hour mode as many shows go just over 2 hours. Forum available at http://220.130.29.146/ikonboard.cgi. Haven't burned very many DVDs, however memorex DVD+RW working well.
Primary complaint is inability to change thumbnail in menu, but it seems that most people will do dvd authoring on computer anyways.

Did hack for macrovision and for 3 hour mode successfully, just read what is out there and do it correctly, it works.
Bought second 5001 to get older firmware after burning 1143 and 1163, loosing macrovision bypass. Got had, it was updated to 1143, even though it was built in Dec. 2003. Updating was after removal from box. So I had to find and use successfully the hacks for my now two Liteon 5001's.

DO NOT UPGRADE beyond 1141 if you need to disable Macrovision. Unable to get back from 1163 which is great except for not being able to disable Macrovision, which is more important to me than running cooler and other features. There is a hack that adds Macrovision disable and a 3 hour mode, but I can't find it as yet. Anyone that can get me the hack, or get me back to 1141, would be much appreciated. Legal issues prevents future disable of Macrovision, so don't look for it.

Bought this writer 6 weeks ago in Germany at "Mediamarkt" for 269,--Euro (price includes GEMA fee). Recorded approx. 50 DVD+R, no +RW (all failed).

+ Macrovision may be switched off with firmware 1141

- tried several different +RW media: all failed at latest during 1st rewrite

- MONO tuner: an external tuner (VCR) is needed to record in STEREO

- may drop a lot of frames in EP (4hrs) mode, which makes watching even slow movements or pannings a pain. The same scene may be recorded without visible distortions the next time by chance. It turns out to be a matter of luck (and length of source material) how many DVDs you will need to get an acceptable copy.

- several SP recordings failed with DVD+Rs where EP recordings were already present. The title icon including correct recording info (length) appeared, but the SP recording(s) refused to play.

- colour error soon after screen saver starts: former yellow writing "Light up your digital live" turns colourful. As does the normal picture: Several horizontal zones each coloured greenish to red/violet from top to bottom superimposed to the ordinary nearly colourless picture. Unit has to be switched off and on to return to normal state.

- manual leaves many questions open

- contacted LiteOn customer support 3 times by e-mail: NEVER got any response (since beginning of march). (Questions to Philips and Panasonic customer support regarding their DVD recorders had been answered within a week/2 days, resp.)

When disks are burned on the 1 or 2 hour burn setting, the result is decent quality when played from the Liteon. . The interesting thing is that the disks burned on the Liteon will not even read on my Pioneer 107 DVD-R,+R burner. You will not be able to copy any disks unless you come up with a trick. Disks burned on the Liteon will not play on my Pioneer DVD-440 player, Mintek 1600 or my Cyberhome 300.
