Waited long enough and got my first DVD recorder from Future Shop for $99.99 when my VCR started to act up, I use it mostly to record TV programs when I am not home and the occasion VHS to DVD transfer. I choose LiteOn based on my excellent experience with their PC optical drives, they provide frequent firmware upgrade and make the drive for bigger brands such as Sony, but at half the cost. So far so good and very easy to use and I wonder why people need to spend the money for a model with a hard drive when direct recording is so easy and seamless with this LiteOn. I love the fact you can play the contents back wihtout finalizing on the machine or on any other DVD player when using DVD+R, but you must finalize for DVD-R before it works on other players. 4 and 6 hour recording is pretty good and looks better than SP on VCRs so using 1 or 2 hour recording mode gives excellent quality.

Applied the region free hack and all is good.

Recommmended for an under $100cdn recorder !

I use this to record my PBS shows.Overall I'm satisfied with my purchase.

Pros 1 small foot print approx 11" wide 10" deep
2 No problems playing discs burnt w/different
NEC drives and Nero
3 Good price $75
4 1,2,3,4,6 hour recording settings

Cons 1 Tuner isn't as good as on my LVW 5005A
2 No front display
3 No buttons on unit, break or lose your remote
and it's useless
4 very slow to load a disc
5 You'll need a Sima GoDVD if you want to use
this to back up your Macrovision flicks
6 buttons on remote not very ergonomic

Lite-On must have taken down the the link to the firmware upgrade, I can't get to from the IT-America or Global site. So far, had trouble hooking in to my main system with a JVC receiver. Tried to connect it through Sat Receiver w/TIVO to receiver could never get a video feed, I ended up bypassing the receiver and connecting straight to the TV's front RCA inputs like a camera. I prefer the S-Video connections and of course this model doesn't have any. I ended up connecting it to the Sat receiver and TV/Monitor in the Den worked fine with component out. Overall I am happy with it, but haven't had time to do a lot yet. Both shows I recorded with it worked fine on my stand alone player.

Will not play DVD-R burned on a Pioneer 104 or a Pioneer stand alone.

Since DVD-R is a major player in the field, it seems ridiculous that Liteon would not make this machine compatible.

Wish I had better luck with it, liked the picture quality, and the 3hr mode, however, like my 3 dead Ilo's it was unreliable, giving me 5 invalid disc errors. 4 errors on blank dvd's, 1 on a recently finalized dvd from that recorder, it went back. Maxell +R seemed to have a half a chance of working, Memorex +R, Verbatim, Sony, Memorex -R's didn't seem to want to work, even after the firmware upgrade

To get the latest firmware, 1.9, go to www.liteonit.com and choose International IT as your region, then you'll be able to find the firmware.

Within the past month I've had 2 ILO DVDR04's die on me that I bought a little over a year ago. Got decent mileage I guess out of both, probably over 500 dvds burned on each. Both got to where they were creating lots coasters by either not "finalizing" or by giving a "fail" error during "finalizing". I had my eye on this one for awhile, having heard on some forums it has the old LSI chipset and another reviewer here saying he successfully hacked the Macrovision by using Mr. Wizards software from http://ilohacker.tripod.com/ If you go to www.liteonit.com and download the latest firmware, and start version 1.5b of Mr. Wizards fix, it does come back and say it successfully took care of the region code and macrovision. Burned the hacked file to cd, inserted, it did update, went to burn some dvds from vhs and some will burn and others won't. For instance, the movie "Catch Me if You Can" vhs will come back and say "Protected Content" immediately on the top of the Lite-On recording bar, which you see at the top of your TV screen while recording, then within about 5 seconds the recording stops. Interestingly, the movies "Blade 2" and "Total Recall" would record to this unit from the original vhs of each without saying "Protected Content". Didn't feel like having the macro hack sometimes working and sometimes not, so I reinstalled the original firmware. Then I did the "2960" region hack mentioned here, which btw works, hooked up a Sima CT-200 GoDVD, hit record on the "Catch Me if You Can" movie, and it recorded fine without a "Protected Content" message or auto shutoff. Why am I mentioning all this? Because I bought this wanting the macrovision hack to work 100% of the time like it did on my ILO's. It doesn't, so I think others should know this, before they run to the story hoping for an absolutely clean ILO-like macrovision hack.

This unit is small and elegant, silver with a black front panel. Its reasonably fast and supports 1,2,3,4, and 6 hour recording modes. The quality on 6 hour mode is pretty good and I've tried out my recordings on DVD-RW disc's on other players and they work excellently. I've only tried Fujifilm 2x DVD-RW's with it but the manual says it works with +RW as well. It only supports 480p on progressive which some people might want to know before purchasing.

There is a hack on the internet which disables macrovision and enables region free which you can already enable by entering 2960 while having exit highlighted on the setup menu.

All in all I dont think you can beat this unit for the price!

Has worked great so far. Internal tuner seems better than LVW-5005 but will have to check the specs to make sure (this one says it will do dolby digital 2 channel stereo recording ++++).
Plays both VCD and SVCD on CD-R media.
Macrovision and region free hack worked perfecly.
Follow the instructions exactly on the following websites.
Get updated liteon firmware V.19from their website http://www.liteonit.com/DC/English/download.htm
Then apply V1.5B hack from this website: http://ilohacker.tripod.com/
Applied hack just like done on my LVW-5005 : http://www.videohelp.com/dvdrecorders.php?DVDname ... ndcomments
Unit has worked fine. Have also tested all recording modes with no problems. Have not tested straight 6 hour long recording (haven't had a need to) but have filled a dvd with 6 hours total of recording with no audio sync issues.

Purchased at Best Buy model LVW-1107H1 for $99. Played the following encoded avi files:

Created with AutoGK V2.27 using either xvid or divx codec.
Created with Simple DIVX using either xvid or divx codec.
Both encoded files worked with either mp3 or ac3 audio.
Had problems with playback if video was encoded to odd size not standard profile like home theater or cinema standards at 720 x 304 or equivalent. Also wouldn't play divx files unless file extension was changed from divx to avi then played flawlessly. Even though player only says it will play mp4 or avi files IT WILL PLAY divx files if the extension is changed to AVI. Wouldn't play nero mp4 files at all.
Worked with RITEK-W04 -RW 4x media as well as memorex 2.4X +RW media.

Has stereo ca-tuner so recording directly from inside tuner is great (dolby digital.

No luck yet on macrovision hack but plays any region with the following hack:

Instruction for Remote Region Code Hack for the Lite On lvw-1107hc1

1) Enter "Setup" button on the Remote control.
2) Scroll down and highlight "Exit".
3) While "Exit" is highlighted enter 2,9,6, and 0.
4) Press "Enter".
5) A hidden menu pops up and you can select any region or "Region Free" option.
6) Browse to “Region Free” and press “Enter” to select.
7) For exit press "Setup" button again.

Good Luck and best wishes!!!
