nice barebones recorder. Does a fine job on VHS to DVD and camcorder input via firewire. A plus is support for DivX4,5,6, and Xvid. DivX 3.1 not supported. Remote is way better than other budget recorders (such as Cyberhome). Price cited is after BB rebate.

I got the LVW 1101HC1 model at BB around thanksgiving after researching the many models available. I was looking for another model but am glad I got this. First off, It plays any DVD/CD I put in (not QPel or QT - wmv) which is a nice extra. I was pleased to see the cooling fan in the back as I read many had problems in the past with overheating. No S-video in but no biggie since encoders tend to do better with just a good video cable (depending on chipset). Everyone should know by now that coax in/out is a no-no..but I have great results using composite from Dish reciever. SP is best but LP mode is half D1 res that still looks better than VHS. AC3 encoder is excellent. I took a bunch of VHS home movies and encoded in SP mode to DVD+RW and the results were very good. It would be nice to be able to tweak the temporal/spatial smoothers but it's not like this is a near $1000 Canopus device.
I ran into the problems with DVD_VR UDF 2.0 and tried many variations of getting the files onto HDD including ISObuster, VOBrator, MPEGMuxer, etc., until I found the easiest way was to import DVD Video files from the disc into TDA, select track, and edit. I finally ended up with a nicely authored set of DVD home movies.
Now, what would be cool is a firmware hack like the many floating around for ilo and cyberhome for which LiteOn made the guts as well.
If you want this for your main DVD player then skip it. Also true if you want it as a tuner or if you need something that will auto-play everything or has the simplicity of a VCR.
If you want it for what it is, a decent priced hardware MPEG encoder (Dolby Digital, too), then this is a great buy.

I got the unit from Best Buy during the Thanksgiving
sale. I hooked it up to my ATSC tuner through the
composite input and, surprisingly, found the recording
was in widescreen mode for HD programs instead of the
cropped 4X3 pictures. Definitely a plus.
However, I found several annoying items as well.
1. One had to go through a navigational menu and
multiple button clicks to
select audio tracks and subtitles during DVD
playback. Useable but annoying.
2. No DTS stream according to the manual. Sound
effect playback has to be Dolby Digital.
3. No s-video input, what a pain.
4. I can't find any autoplay on media files stored
on a disc. A screen menu always get displayed
to have a user to select video, music, or picture
playback. That means the TV has to be on to play
anything other than DVD, VCD etc.
5. Powering up takes a long time. Without any display
on the unit other than two LEDs, it is kind of
hard to tell what the unit is doing. Even the
tray open button refuses to work until the unit
completely powers up (I think it takes about 20sec
or so but I have not actually timed it).
6. The unit occasionally locks up. None of the remote
button nor the buttons on the unit works until
I unplugged the AC power cord and plugged it back
in.

I saw this tiny little recorder for $69 this weekend at Best Buy and had to buy the HC1 model of the LVW-1101. Sure, it's a little barebones, but what it does, it does well.
Setup and recording was incredibly simple. Just insert the disc, let the disc prepare, and in a minute you'll be using the XP or SP modes to produce very high quality dubs of satellite TV or video from a camcorder or whatever. The sound reproduction is also fantastic, albeit a little louder than I would like.
The unit comes with one quality DVD+RW (ricohjpn-w11-01) so you'll be ready to go right out of the box. The unit only supports recording on DVD+R/W media, but I have nothing against DVD+. Playback of DVD-R and -RW discs is not a problem though. The included remote works well, but the design is nothing special so I will be sticking with my universal. Sadly, there are no s-video or component hookups, and this is a disappointment to me. For the price, component was not expected, but no s-video?
One thing I did not expect about the HC1 when I saw it is that it supports mpg4 video. I tested this unit out with 5 xvid avi discs that came from multiple sources, and all files played without a hitch. Although a few files did have some stuttering issues at times during playback, I am more likely to blame this on the creator of the files themselves than the unit. I also tested out the MPG file playback feature with some clips both in and out of DVD specs, and all played back great.
Time will tell, but right now, I am pleased with the purchase. For $69, you can't go too wrong. It's even hard to find much fault at the regular price of $99. Overall I rated this unit only a solid 7 because it is pretty barebones. Thankfully, the lack of features doesn't stop it from producing great picture and sound at an incredible price, and the Mpg4 playback is a great perk.
