Plays nearly everything I have thrown at it. VCD/SVCD is excellent picture better than old player. Divx and Xvid will play in the machine but 1 problem for each codec. The hacked version of Divx (3.11) will not work at all. Had an old disk with a cartoon on it done in 3.11 and it stopped the machine flat, had to be unplugged. The Xvid files need the bitstream unpacked, no big deal just a quick run through mpeg4modifier and fine. This is a little hassle because every file has to be checked or if it is played with the bitstream packed it will jitter and skip. Recording is only allowed on the dvd+ family and it does a superb job. The best quality setting is prime and I cannot tell the difference from the source, TV or VCR. Setting 2 is pretty good too but some blocks can be seen. MP3 worked fine but I have only played one cd and it only went one folder deep. Picture disk worked fine and pics were burned as data. I would suggest this DVD recorder to anyone. Wide spectrum of formats and the pic quality is great from its own recording and from other sources.

This is a pretty good recorder/player. It does its job as far as recording, but the audio is recorded very at a very low level. Only records on DVD+R. Buggy behavior when trying to play .avi files. I'm not sure if it is supposed to support divx & xvid, but some work and some don't. If it comes to a file on a disc that will not play, it is supposed to skip to the next file; however, more often than not it freezes. The only way to un-freeze it is to unplug the machine. It is really annoying. Plays mpg and mpegiso well. If you want this recorder for .avi file support, don't bother. If you want a cheap DVD recorder that works, you found it.
