For the person complaining about the video format. You can use any DVD Authoring program to read the contents of the DVD and only author the first track. If you copy both tracks, they will be the same thing, in other words, it seems like 8gb, but it is really one track linked to the other.

This unit does everything I needed. It copies VHS to DVD, and has program timers to record many TV shows just like a VCR. Use DVD+RW and delete old shows to record more, just like re-using a VHS tape, but better.
DVD+RW does not require 'finalize' and you can begin recording as soon as it powers up.

It does not have any fancy editing because it is NOT a computer. It is a one button copy VHS to DVD, and then hit stop when you find the end of the VHS recording. You must watch to stop at the proper place. There is no other magical way to make any machine stop at the right place unless you pay attention. Or you can hit record, pause, or stop any time you please. Very basic and much better than a VCR.

NOT ACCEPTABLE, AVOID
The Liteon LVC-9016G is a VHS-DVD combo unit that can record DVDs from VHS tapes and VHS tapes from DVDs. It has a very good user interface and is easy to use. However, the VHS tape functions are limited and so are the DVD functions. Although the unit performs well as a copy device from one media to the other, it is not as good as having a separate VCR and a separate DVD recorder. A major flaw with this unit's copy function (from VHS to DVD) is that you cannot use the OTR (One Touch Recording) function once you have started copying from VHS to DVD. The problem is that you have to stop the recording manually instead of, for example, setting the OTR to stop the recording automatically after 1 or 2 or 6 hours. This is a real pain if you want to transfer only 3 hours say, of a 6 hour VHS tape. You have to hang around for 3 hours to stop the thing when you want, a real pain in the neck.

You are much better of with a $50 VCR and a separate $150 (0r less) DVD recorder and a simple A/V cable. At least you will have a full-featured VCR and if one unit fails you can replace it easily.

Another, and perhaps more serious problem with the Liteon LVC-9016G (and with other Liteon DVD Recorder models) is that it records DVDs with a very strange and troublesome format. Basically, when you look at the DVD on a computer with Windows Explorer (and other programs) you will see more than 8gb (yes 8 gigabytes!) of files on a 4.7gb single layer DVD. It appears that Liteon records extra stuff for some unknown reason that fools most Windows programs. The bottom line about this crazy format is that you cannot ever reauthor or edit the DVD! The only thing you can do is make an image copy (say from DVD RW to DVD R) but the copy still shows 8gb of files that you cannot reauthor. This is the main reason that I rate the Liteon LVC-9016G as NOT ACCEPTABLE and it should be avoided like the plague.

By the way, the same unacceptable recording format was found on the Liteon LVW-5005 and the Liteon LVW-1101HC1 models and these are also NOT ACCEPTABLE. Paul Holliday (May 2006)

Comments:
I purchased this new Lite-On model at a Costco store in Michigan during the last week of March, 2006. The unit has a manufacturing date of December, 2005. Thus far, I have recorded basic cable programming using both the included DVD+RW disc and Verbatim 16x-rated DVD+R discs. The quality of the recorded video and audio has been excellent. I played back a finalized Verbatim DVD+R on my laptop with pretty good results, the only oddity being some "wavy" type distortion along the top edge of the laptop's screen.

My only real complaint thus far is with the tuner. It brings in Channels 5 and 6 (two local UHF channels) with far too much video and audio distortion. Those two channels are unrecordable. In my case I do not want to record off them anyway, but if I did, I would be forced to get this resolved or else return the unit. This might have something to do with my TV getting basic cable only. If I were routing the signal through a cable or satellite box, maybe the tuner issue would not occur.

A final note: the region hack mentioned for the earlier model, 9015G, also works here. I watched a few minutes of a Region 2 sci-fi TV show with no problems.
