Just an update - better late than never.
It's been working more or less OK for the past year with the replacement PC drive in it. I got around to hacking the case and fitting the drive in properly. Cunning Lite-On had made it a different fitting to the standard PC drive, so some minor Dremeling had to be done, but electrically it fitted fine.
It writes HDD recorded material to the DVD disc no problem but there's a minor glitch on playback - it plays ok, but FF and FR doesn't work too well. Still, it's ok for the main purpose I bought it for, which is timeshifting and transferring files to and from the PC.
Would I buy another? No way, José.

I was given this as a warranty exchange for a dreadful Wharfedale and it was great for a few months. Excellent menu and very easy to use and set up. Only minor gripe is that you can't title a recording as you set the timer - you have to do that later once it's on the HD and you intend to keep it or simply keep track of it.
Then a well-known problem started rearing its head (well-known to those who own one, but not very well-known to anyone else) - the DVD drive started being unable to read some discs and wouldn't format or record to DVD+RWs. At first I thought it was dodgy media, but no, it did it consistently with other makes.

As it turns out, the DVD burner is a weak spot on these and Lite-On fitted one of thier own to it. Normally Lite-On DVD burners are fairly good, but (I assume) because of competition on price in this sector they really cut costs and corners with the drive and it's a nasty cheap unit that will only last for a few months if you're lucky.
I was happy enough with the whole unit otherwise, so instead of sending it back and getting another crapshoot, decided to simply replace the drive with something more reliable - like another Lite-On; glutton for punishment, eh? As I said above, normal PC Lite-Ons are OK, and it was just a question of finding what one was the best match.
This thread here was a good source of information [url]http://tinyurl.com/3pyrq3[/url and I fitted a Lite-On DH-20A4P which works very well electrically, but isn't an easy fit in the case, so is sitting on top of the case at the moment. From another thread there I see someone has gutted the old drive and fitted the new guts with no problem, they both being from the same maker, so I will look to see if that's possible with mine.
