| Very cheap recorder, £67 from Tesco. Easy to use but very slow to switch tp the AV channel when you turn it on (at least 10 seconds) and slow to start recording and stopping. Plays DivX and XVid but sync is way off so it is not watchable. Also, terrible remote control, you really have to press hard and point it directly at the player to get it to work. It's one of those wafer thin clicky bathmat-type remotes, like an old ZX81 keyboard! But all said and done this is a good player for the money. |

Pros - cheap, plays divx.
Cons - you can't quickly record. It takes one/two minutes to set itself up once the disk is inserted and then a further fifteen seconds if the disk is not in the recorders particular format.
- if you turn the recorder off at the mains, conserving energy, the date and time is lost, so this needs to be reset if timer recordings are wanted.
- items recorded by the recorder are ok, but if you've recorded on your computer, then play on the recorder, some items may not show up. Folders not shown.
- If you have more than one recording on disc, you cannot delete individual recordings. You have to erase the whole disk.
- Seemed to have a slight out of sync problem. Reading reviews, if any recorder is cheap it is more than likely there will be slight sync problems as a cheap converter chip is used. I exchanged for another, still the problem. Upgraded firmware but still out. However after four weeks it now seems to have settled down. You can correct any recording using VideoRedo Plus, but it then converts to mpg format and takes time.
- problem with Tesco +RW dvd disks. If you start a recording manually, then stop almost immediately, the disk then shows up as invalid. I can however record on this disk on my computer system, but no matter what I do, reformat, erase, write, the disk cannot be used on the recorder. This problem has now occurred when I erased the disk in the recorder. No good if you want to use RW disks ! Hasn't happened to Imation +RW or HP +RW. Yet ! |

Simple to set up, vey good value for £67 from Tesco. Have only tried SP (2 hrs) and HQ (1Hr) recording but both are superb.
DVD+/-RW do not require finalising and can be transfered from machine to machine with ease. DVD-/+ R must be finalised before playback on stand alone players.
Very good connections ie SCART , AV, S Video and Firewire ports.
Onscreen "Guider" makes recording (and erasing RW's) and timer recording simple.
I have provided a mark of 8 because I have only used this player for 2 weeks and have still a lot of functions and formats to try out.
Anyone who knows the LiteOn brand from PC DVD Burners will be aware of the build quality and as a machine to set up easily, record and watch playback on this is perfect for the technophobes out there.
I guess a lot of stockings will include one of these but they won't last long at their current price. |
