I have had a few problems using this over the past 1 year but have found ways to get around them.
1. Sometimes after editing some titles, I get blue screen preview picture on other titles, then they disappear after I turn the recorder off and on.
-> Now I make sure that I rename all the titles uniquely. I don't have this problem anymore as long as I do this.
2. After 1 yr of using this player, suddenly I got lip sync problems (sound lags the picture) after editing advertisements and then recorded the entire title to DVD-R. I did some research and found a software upgrade at a Hong Kong forum
http://hk.geocities.com/homerchau/mypage.html
Installed the upgrade and problem was fixed. You may want to check with your manufacturer in-country before apply this upgrade.
3. Sometimes the player freezes up - don't know why. It does not happen often enough for me to establish a pattern. I get a blue picture preview for my recorded titles. Have to restart but all titles are still there.
4. When editing out the advertisements, the cut off point is about a second after the point that I select. I still see the end of the advert if I don't factor in this extra 1 sec. |

Has ALL the problems listed in the user reports below. Not serious stuff, but annoying somehow.
THe worse problem:
My unit will not keep audio/video sync on the DVD, if I cut away advertising from TV recording before tranferring them from HDD to DVD. At each cut sync goes worse (up to 1-2 seconds for a whole movie, after 4-6 cuts). Now I'm recording to DVD with ads and then re-authoring on my PC (also getting better DVD menus), but it's much time consuming! |

Basic operation is OK and the machine is reasonable value for money. Built in card reader is useful and not common in other machines.
Main criticisms:
> Clumsy menu for title editing - tedious process
> Resulting titles on DVD-R are truncated (display fewer characters than what is accepted when inputting title)
> Fast dubbing is only available for DVD-RW with unedited original material. Result is that most dubbing is in real-time speed (ie SLOW)
> Dual-language recordings record OK to HDD but if dubbed / copied to a DVD, only one channel is avaiable and is usually the one you don't want (cannot be controlled as far as I can figure)
> Sometimes (when hot?) the machine will only record one chapter to a DVD after which it is flagged as "FULL". Can waste a lot of DVD-R's.
> Occasionally reboots itself in the middle of a recording. |

| I've got this machine on loan, to tide me over while my Pioneer DVR420 is being fixed. All I can say is that I'm very glad I bought the Pioneer, the current fault notwithstanding, and can't wait to get it back. Two major problems have cropped up in my short period of using the LG. Firstly, you can't add chapter marks to recordings on the hard drive. Secondly, as Mario pointed out, the lack of a high-speed copying facility is a major drawback, as is the apparent inability to compile a list of titles for burning to disc. Oh dear... |

| good tuner and menu system, but i managed to hang the whole thing by quickly pressing the buttons on the remote control during a HDD playback. had to press and hold the power switch for 5 seconds to cause a "reboot" and with luck only the title being played back was lost. |

I'm very disappointed. I bought it early November
and realized that it has a lip sync problem when
dubbing an edited clip from HDD to DVD. Sometimes
lip sync appears on direct recordings to HDD or DVD.
All the DVDs I burned using the 4820 are useless,
unless I had dubbed the clip unedited to the DVD.
It's been in service for a month and no workaround
or fix has been found yet. No estimate if and when the
problem will be fixed. My model is a RH-4820V (I don't know how the last letter differentiates models).
I've seen comments about the same problem on a LG-4810.
Prospective LG 4820 buyers beware! Or should I say
look elsewhere... |

I bought it before two weeks in moderate price and it works good. I use it mostly to transfer movies from my DV Cam via i-link, and it works fine. Recording quality is good in HQ and SQ modes. I have very good TV and I can not say that I saw any visible difference in viewing quality between these two modes. Recordings in those two modes realy looks like original. I do not use LQ mode, but find it is not very bad when you recording from TV. When recording from DV Cam, LQ mode is not good.
So, everything I record from DV Cam is in HQ mode, and everything I record from TV or other sources (I recorded some old VHS tapes from my old Cam, and some movies from VHS tapes) is in SQ mode.
I do not have problem with compatibility, so everything I recorded I can play in my old JVC DVD (and my brother's Pioneer DVD).
The only thing that is not good is that it can not make high-speed dubbing between HDD and DVD in video mode (between HDD and DVD-RW in VR mode it can) and you must do it in real time. It's a problem for me because DVD-R is much cheaper than DVD-RW, and DVD-R in video mode can be played in all DVD players. Also, in instruction manual stays that only high-speed copies are losseles. In addition, if you want to copy from HDD to DVD (Video mode) you must do it in real time which makes this recorder very slowly compared to some rival recorders (but which are much more expensive - you must give 200 Euros more for rival Pioneer 520S in my country).
What other owners of this recorder think about this "problem" and does anybody knows how much I lose in picture quality when copying from HDD to DVD (Video mode) in same quality in real time (HQ to HQ dubbung) |

| I also bought one 1 weeks ago for 499 euros and think that was the best buy I've made, the first thing I done when arrived home was to open the machine to see the HD and I saw a IDE controler board and one Seagate 80GB ATA :D, I would like to know if is possible to upgrade the HD to a bigger one, or it requires a flash on the firmware??? I'll try it, but if anyone have done it say if it works or if it needs something else??? Best Regards |

| The menu system can become a little tedious. Recorded DVDs create their own menu -- the thumbnails captured on the HDD are not used. Also allows for 2 way copying -- DVD to HDD or HDD to DVD. Time Slip feature available, and his in-built TV tuner. 80 hours recording available on the lowest quality setting -- picture is fine except when moving "shades" are recorded (e.g. water in a swim race). |

| I also purchased one, after reviewing a number of units in store & on-line. This is by far the easiest unit to operate, and has fairly advanced functions that are simple to use. HDD editing could be a little simpler -- it requires splitting of the files, and then deleting the ones you don't want. Even on Low Qual (LQ - 80 hours), the image is OK unless it contains many shades (e.g. water waves). |

I bought one 2 weeks ago for 749 euros and so far I'm very satisfied with it. Easy to use, overall qood quality about HDD and DVD recording (HQ and SQ modes) and playing. The first transfers from a DV camcorder are very satisfactory. I appreciate also to store JPEG and MP3 files into the HDD to play them at any time without any CD or DVD. To be improved : generated menu (too simple) in the video mode for DVD-R.
Overall this is an excellent investment regarding the functionalities, the easy GUI and the moderate price. |
