I have had to return my first one of these because it failed to eject the media I put into it! The retailer had no problem replacing it with another lgdr4912 but this failed on the recording side of things.I didnt return this as I felt it a waste of time .I use it to route my other equipment through.Overall my opinion would be too rude to print!Hence to say no more lgs for me!

It works well with 2 exceptions. There are 2 SCART sockets, but one appears to be input only and the other output only, this makes it impossible to connect my Pioneer DV99 home cinema system, my TV and my VHS recorder. There is also a problem with synchronisation between sound and video. When I play a DVD-R or -RW that I've recorded from VHS on the LG it's ok, and it's ok on some cheap DVD players, but when I play it on my Pioneer the sound is ahead of the video so the lip-sync looks silly. When recording it's even worse. I want to take it back but I'm not sure if it's the recorder or the player.

My first desktop DVD recorder, bought after a lot of consideration becuase I wanted one which was compatible with both plus and minus format. Very robust looking and well built, this recorder scores well by having plenty of inputs and outputs - there's two SCARTS on the back (1 of which can be switched to support RGB), there's composite video and audio out, co-ax and optical out, as well as component video out making it a good choice for use with LG's matching high end televisions. There's a DV camcorder port on the front, as well as another set of composite video/audio ports - these are hidden away behind a flap. RF in/out is provided for those who still get their TV pictures through an aerial or analogue cable.

Recording is very simple, even if you've never used a desktop recorder before. The menus are slick and neatly presented, with nice fade in and out effects. The menus created on the recorded discs vary with the type of disc used, as does the degree of editing functionality, but the DVD+RW chapter editing is very good, and in all modes -/+ r and rw you at least get the option to give recorded programmes a title, in +R and +RW mode you can give them a selectable thumbnail graphic as well, and the menus's even play full motion video previews of the recorded title. -RW has a 'playlist' feature which allows you to edit out
commercial breaks from the recorded stream.

If you want your own menus, or complex editing, you can easiliy transfer recordings made on this unit on to your computer, and use MPEG editing and DVD creation software to make a complete custom DVD.

Picture quality is impossible to fault, I have done a number of test recordings from various sources, and even in the 4 hour recording mode there is very little picture degredation from the original source, perfect for recording movies from TV or VHS. Chapter marks can be automatically created at selectable intervals (5, 10 or 15 mins) or created manually via the remote control.

A basic VCR like timer is included, which claims to support PDC (program delivery control), but I couldn't find any videoplus, not that that is a problem as I use a PVR to record my programes from live TV, the DVD recorder is being used to archive the programs I want to keep - this is an ideal arrangement!

Playback of normal and recorded DVD's is fine - good sound quality from both digital and analogue outputs.

In short, if you're looking for a feature packed replacement for your VCR, or a way to archive programmes from an exisiting TiVo, SKY+, freeview or other PVR system, this is a great recorder to go for, especially considering it's ease of use and compatibility with all different media types.

It's currently being stocked by Currys and Comet, but I got mine from Richer Sounds in the UK.

My DVD/VHS Combo is LG V8826W and would not play any other region code but 4.
Tried to use the reset menu to change, and even when reset to 'US' would only play reg. 4.
Tried the hack for LG DR-4912 and this worked--
power on
open tray
press remote '0' three times
changed region to '0'
press 'pause' to exit
Works fine now on regions 1,2,4 or 'all'
Thanks heaps for the help---

Well I tried the region hack, and it worked like a charm.

If I do the same once again I can lock it to region 2 as it was at the beginning.

Don't know how to region lock it to region 1, If someone wanted to do that.

Don't know if there is a limitid amount of times you can use the region hack. On some players you can only change the region a numbere of times.

Conclusion:

This is an awsome recorder, and I'm very pleased with it.
