have one of this since 1 year and it started badly burning DVD-R media with plenty of bad sectors unreadable on computer or by itself. I think the lazer header is dead, has someone replaced DVD reader/writer unit ? wich make and model to use ?

I have used this recorder for a 1.5 years now.
It is reliable and does perfectly everything it is supposed to.
I have recorded probably 200 DVD discs with it, mostly old family VHS and TV programs.
It works perfectly with Sony and Datawrite 1X, DVD -RW discs. Do not try to use anything faster than 1X DVD -RW, it want work for me.
For best results, I always transfer the recorded video to my PC, edit, reauthor and burn to DVD-R.
For complete compatibility with DVD standards, use video mode recording.

Works fine, but....DVD-RW doesn't work at all.
I have send the recorder back for modification at LG, but they can 't find any errors??? Back at home the problem still persists!

And when i read the comments here, there are more users with this problem. So, again, i will send it back to LG and hope they will fix it know.

For the rest, i'm a happy user!

The Recorder works fine as long as you do not try to use the recorded DVD-Rs in other players.
I had a variety of bad experiences with that: from freezing or jumping images, to randomly repeating chapters, to just "unreadable". It is just not reliable if you send it out to other people or bring it for a screening etc.
Second: I just bought a new LaCie excternal drive and burned a DVD-R with iDVD. It plays back fine on other DVD players, but it does not play back here. (Well, you might say, this is a recorder not a player)
Anyway, I kind of regret having bought it, I wanted to have it for making quick copies without having to go through the computer.

Have fully recorded 30->40 E-Proformance DVD-RW with very little trouble for a wide variety of transfers (DV Camera-VCR-Digital Satellite etc). Machine has some eccentricities that I have learned ways to overcome, but good value for money.
Does not work reliably with Datasafe DVD-RW x2 disks. LG recommend TDK DVD-RW for this machine, but I have not tried them due to cost and having lots of E-proformance ones that work.

Bought this recorder xmas 2004,i use datawrite -R discs which work without any problems.Tried using Datasafe DVD-RW 2X discs but they caused the machine to hang up during any operation.Bought a single Traxdata DVD-RW disc which works perfectly.
I have connected my vcr to this player to transfer old recordings to disc, this also works very well. One video tape failed to copy to disc so i connected the vcr to dvd recorder via my Sony video camera and Fire Wire port, this also worked perfectly.
This machine has been excellent value for the money, does what it says on the box and plays any disc that i have produced on my PC.

All in all, this recorder has been quite kind to me for 6 months, but I'm beginning to get realy fed up with it not reading DVD-RW. When placing an -RW disc into the machine, it tries to READ and fails. Then your option is to INITIALIZE the disc by using DISC FORMAT which has a countdown of 2MINS & 30SECONDS. When the clock has reached zero, the machine just HANGS UP. By reading the comments left by other users, they have been experiencing the same problems. Going back to the shop with this one. May ask for a different model as this seems to be a fault with not just mines.

The problems concern the use of DVD-RW disks from Intenso and Platinum:
Intenso: after recording at playback the image sometimes "hangs", while the counter proceeds, after a while it plays for a short time and stops again. This continues on and on, so watching properly isn't possible

Platinum: no acceptance obviously, because the recorder "reads", "intialises" , "reads", "initialises", and so on. I can't even get the DVD out of the machine.

Be aware that you cannot connect to a PC via the firewire connection , this will only work with camcorders. This means that you cannot export your video directly out from your video editing software . I use Pinnacle Studio 9 and it does not recognise the DVD recorder as a device.
Its fine with a camcorder connected.

Just bought one of these and so far I'm very happy with it, although I haven't tried out compatability with other players or my computer yet. One thing that I would warn against is that it is very deep in size, I have ot a 32" LG TV with an LG cabinet underneath and it was way to big to go in the cabinet, I had to take the back off the cabinet and modify the cabinet to get it to fit. It says on the box "Ultra Slim" well I would prefer it to be a bit thicker and less deep.

Had this for a week now having had a +R/RW machine for about 6 months.

Generous set of inputs and outputs, nice editing possibilities, great playback operation and recording quality are the best points, Flaky RW recording is a major downer though..Haven't yet been able to record a RW disc and put it into my PC DVD drive for transferring and editing-with the +RW's, it was no problem. I will miss the longer recording time of the + machine (6 hrs against 4 hrs on this one), and although the PIP()Picture In Picture) is a great function, it's a shame it only works while the recorder is in play mode. My last TV had PIP, and it's something I really miss.

If I can't solve this RW disc problem, it will be going back, which will be a shame as it is otherwise a solid machine, and at £199, it won't break the bank as an entry into the world of DVD recording.

Several German users reported a problem w/ Region 2 models: After some time of OK operation the writer won't complete booting, i.e. the status-line "PLEASE WAIT" is displayed and the machine will "hang". http://www.dvdboard.de/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=546836#post546836

Apart from these problems this is a reasonably priced -RW burner with a good user-interface and proper functionality, thus the rating.

I've been using this recorder for 3 weeks now and am very happy with it. Recording to dvd-r in videomode and on a -RW on videorecording mode. Some editing can be done. Scenes can be deleted without any problems by using the discmenu, a scenetittle can be added and with finalizing the DVD a menu is created. Installing the recorder on your local cable frequenties is very easy and automatic however putting the stations in the order you want is very timeconsuming with the Move Function, the you have to name them which takes a lot of time too. The DV-In function is easy to use, just plug the cable in the port at the front, search for the scene on your camera you want to record and press record on the recorder, press play on the camera. The manual is easy to read however some information is missing IMHO. Timer function is adequate however instead of programming the start and end-time, you program the Start-Time and duration.... this takes a little bit of getting used to. Recording can be done in HQ, SQ and LQ.... Between SQ and HQ I cannot see the difference, between SQ and LQ there is some difference however it is not much.

Overall comment:

Very good and pleased with it, Design is nice.....rating an 8

Just got one yesterday, works well enough to use it on sq rather than hq, gives about 1h hq , 2h sq and 4h lq. I say about as it works out time remaining to allow for required bit rate of encoding for acion on screen. 2 free dvd-r disks(4x speed) and a reasonable manual - can anyone send me a region free hack and macro remove as i have to put it through a projrctor and macro screws it up.
thanks and enjoy it if you get one
