The dvd-drive in the JVC DR-MV5 is very very poor. So change it. Any
good IDE DVD-recorder fits. If you know how to change the dvd-drive on your
computer, you can change it on your DR-MV5. Just remember to set the drive
as master. |

I got the JVC DR MV5 DVD/VHS recorder to transfer old vhs tapes to DVD. It would not play + at all, even though the manual said it would, so I began using only - to record copies. And the DVD copy it made could not be duplicated (at the time) on a computer... Really defeated the purpose of getting it. And the retailer would only replace it if broken, so I got stuck w/ close to $300 machine. To bad there wasn't any user reviews avail. then.
The VHS tuner side stopped working so only used to play/record DVDs for several months. Then when I wanted to get it working again, unplugged it and it sat for a couple of weeks while I looked for the misplaced extended warranty. Just as I was going to pack it up, tried firing it up again and the VHS was back on. Guess a cold reboot did the trick.
Found use and programming seriously not user friendly.

I have had this unit for 1yr and must say i have had no problems with it as far as what i use it for.
I bought it for my wife to use due to her having issues with my ilo unit.(she has no pacients)More speed settings than my ilo .
Picture quality up to 4 hrs is superb.
She uses this unit on a daily basis and as long as she cleanes the lense as required it has been flawless.
Redid all of my home movies with this unit and i swear the dvd looks better than the tape.
I would agree that the instructions are vage at best.
And if it had a hrd drive like my ilo i would probably buy another one for my livingroom.(i use the ilo like a tivo) |

| 90 days labor, 1 yr parts. This unit when it was working did a good job. It is manufactured in China. Not as reliable as other JVC units I have owned in the past. Both VHS and DVD player. Poor reliability, can't recomend this unit. Waste of money... |

Great picture quality and easy to use once you figure it out. Dubbing was extremely simple and accurate. Manual is poorly written but have been able to figure things out intuitively.
It appears that it is not able to handle closed captioning. I have contacted JVC Support but have not received a response. If this issue is resolved I would increase the rating to an 8.
Would recommend the unit if you're able to get it heavily discounted due to the end of model year. It is also available around the same price as a refurbished item. |
