Worked ok at first - but then the "Loading" bug hit. We've had the machine replaced TWICE under warranty. Seemed to be working ok for a whie, then in Feb we got a new telly. Plugging the "DVD" socket on this into L2 (ie so we could record from the telly) caused the machine to go to "Loading" again. No fix this time. Then recently the DVD player started rejecting brand new prerecorded DVDs with "Disc Error" messages. An old crappy twenty-quid DVD player is fine with the same disks....
So all in all, not a good experience.... good when it works, but went wrong far too often. About to go in the bin.

I have had the unit for over 2 years.Found it easy to operate for my first dvd recorder.Used it mainly to replace my vcr.Never succeeded in using it with bell
expressvu to record directly. It would not accept to
sync to the time of the expressvu.Always had to do it manually.
The unit gives a choise of quality for recording. On the 6 hours setting it is comparable to VHS quality. It will record also on DVD RAM.
After a few months of use i began having "WAKE UP"
appearing everytime i turned on the unit.I wrote to JVC
and they suggest i make a reset. This did not fix the problem.
A few weeks ago started to have "LOADING" appearing
when i turned on the unit. When this happens there is
nothing to do except wait a long time.No way to eject
the disk or to turn off the unit.Everything is frozen solid. After a some time the unit would turn off by itself. If i tried to turn it on again it would show "LOADIND" again.I succeeded to make an eject and put
in a purchased film to find out if it was caused by
the disk that i had recorded.Still same problem
of "LOADING"
Tried to call JVC never got a answer. They never called back.So i brought the unit to there service center.
The service center was not aware of the "LOADING"
problem and kept the unit for evaluation.
Got an answer last week that the problem was the DIGITAL BOARD that had to be changed. The board cost
$373.00 plus labor. The service man called JVC who refused to cover this cost.Needless to say i did not have the unit repaired.
I now have the unit in a box in my garage and i am
keeping it to remind me NEVER to buy anymore JVC
product till i die.I am now looking for a PVR witch
i think will be more reliable.

| It seems that my fan always is on even the recoder is turn off /standby mode. My sound is suddenly worse (scratching noise) with only recording. The picture is ok. The temperory solution is to turn the power of the whole thing off for a hour and then power on. But it seems it getting back. It needs go back to a service centre for a repair. But first I want to check it out for a new firmware of this recorder. I can't find on internet the latest firmware to upgrade. Do anyone know where I can download the firmware of the JVC DR-M10S ??? Please help me. |

| Must follow the manual to get maximum result. I am able to record directly off HBO to DVD. The biggest problem I have had is not being able to digest the manual. I would recommend it to replace a VCR. |

| I too, have had the Loading bug. Called JVC and sent in for warr repair. Only cost was shipping to them. So far, the repaired unit seems to be working fine. Quality of recorded picture is very good even at longer DVD times (4 hrs, etc.). I hope that it will not fail again, but time will tell, as I have only had it back about a month now, with light usage. |

Got the "loading" bug after about 4 months, repaired under warranty, so far, so good...
Other than that, works well, seems to sometimes dislike DVD-RWs but DVD-R and DVD-RAM is fine. Finalised disks work fine on other players and computers.

I have used this recorder for about 2 months now with now problems. I have copied my entire VHS collection dating 10 years back using this unit.
Fairly easy to use. I only which there was a way to make the menus for playback instead of just you get the general blue screen background with the titles that you have to put in with the remote.
I have taken the DVD's to my computer and added some nice menus.
Recording could not be easier. Play on the VCR and push record on the DVD player. I recorded 30 Min VHS-C tapes and put 4 of them on each DVD. This way each 30 min. tape comes up as a seperate selection in the DVD menu. I have done over 60 30 min tapes with no issues.
I have used Memorex 8X DVD-R media. Once finalized they work on every player I have tried. |

Within the first day of use showed the LOADING bug.
I asked the sales kid at Dick Smith Electronics about the bug before I bought. He said that they had fixed the power supply and replaced some solder. In other words - he made up a story to sell me the unit. JVC obviously have no idea what they are doing.
Apart from this - the features are what I wanted - DV input particularly useful. I'll give a few more days. |

I love the machine ..... WHEN IT WORKS !
I am already on my second model, the first unit was "repaired" and had JVC upgrade fitted, under warranty, but that only slowed down the frequency at which it crashed.
When the fault persisted and my retailer warned me that they had to wait for more new parts to be supplied by JVC, they offered to exchange the unit for a new one.
The second one HAS THE SAME, VERY SERIOUS FAULT, but doesn't fail quite so often as the first one did, and the symptoms are SLIGHTLY different.
At indeterminate times and regardless of what make of DVD-R or DVD-RW Discs I am using, the machine will suddenly decide to shut down.
Output to the TV via the SCART socket blanks first, and then a second or so later the machine resets itself. All the front panel illumination flashes on and off at around 1 second intervals, while the display blinks "LOADING", and for about 1 minute you can do nothing with the machine.
In the case of the first machine I had, once the "LOADING" process had completed, the machine "remembered" what it had been doing before it crashed (in my case that was usually recording) and resumed recording from the same channel.
Where the second machine differs, is it DOESN'T remember what it was doing before the crash, and just powers down after re-loading its operating system. (Which is ESPECIALLY BAD NEWS if I had programmed the machine to record TV programmes while unattended).
"Sod's Law", or is that "Murphy's Law", predicts that the intermittent failures will ALWAYS occur at THE MOST INCONVENIENT MOMENT. |

| I have had this for about a week and I am very happy with it. I first tried a SONY VCR/DVD recorder combo, but it didn't even have an S-vido input. The JVC has two S-video inputs and seems to record good quality DVD's from both analog signals and from my digital cable box via S-video. It plays the DVD +R/RW's I burn on my computer with an HP external DVD burner with no problems. |

| Have used this for about a month now with no problems copying from VCR or recording from Satellite. Some of the menus are hard to find, but it has done well so far. It has a large cooling fan on the back that runs while it is on (it is not that loud). I have it in a cabinet that is open in the back for max airflow. It might have "issues" in an enclosed cabinet with no airflow. This may or may not have been part of the problem others have commented on here. Have recorded to DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD-RAM so far with no problems. It will not record to any DVD+R or +RW disks, but it plays the few I have recorded on my computer without problems. |

A word of caution. Although this machine has numerous positive attirbutes, it also carries some baggage that is well documented in the forums but not necessarily in the reviews. Of note is the 'loading' error: http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=241001
I've been very frustrated with what would have been an otherwise exceptional machine. |

| I have been using this unit non-stop for the last 6 weeks and I love it.I have been transfering a lot of my vhs over onto dvd and this machine does the trick.I bought a Panasonic e30 last year and hardly used it because I didn't like the end result. The JVC has some awesome internal hardware that elimates all digital artifacts that I can see with my eyes.I can't say the same thing for my old Panasonic unit which has already been sold.I have used Fuji,Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden dvd-r's and this thing has not made one coaster! The only thing I would have liked would have been a little nicer menu creation but this is par for the course with stand-alone recorders.Buy it and enjoy it! |

I have had this machine for a couple of weeks. The DR-M10 is fairly easy to use and the quality of the dvd's it produces are very good. Compatability with my Plextor DVD -/+ burner is fairly good although some disks spin a long time before they are read by windows. Time shifting when using DVDRAM disks works well.
There are a couple of problems with the DR-M10 though.
High power consumption in standby.
Although the DR-M10 will play PM3's on a DVD+/- disk, there is no way to navigate through the folders, this limitation does not apply to MP3's burned on a CD-R(W) disk.
In some video output modes, for instance SAT Video the fan runs continously, even when the DR-M10 is on standby.
If it were not for the above problems I would have given this on a 9 or 10.
I would recommend the DR-M10 though, especially as it supports DVDRAM which in my opinion is the best format to replace (S)VHS. |

Excellent recorder ! Recording quality up to 2 hours is superb. In the 1 hour mode there is no difference between source and copy. 2 hour mode still very good, ideal for transfering analog camcorder signal to DVD. I was suprised how good the DVD-RAM format works and that is was readable with my Lite-on DVD-ROM. This machine also plays DVD's with mp3-files and/or JPEG files. It has some problems with a few DVD+R's. After some scanning with DVDinfoPro I found that DVD+R from the Ritek factory all work fine. Also tested some XVCD and VCD, the all played back in excellent quality.
Very good value for the money ! |
