Great value. Made by name brand LG, under Insignia.
Simple, user friendly interface, gives you options to record in 1hr, 2hr, 4hr, and 6hr modes. Quality of recording is very good in 1hr, 2hr and even 4hr mode. Would have been nice to have the flex-bitrate option, and the ability to record DVD-DL, but the unit was only $69 so those bells and whistles aren't there. For a simple, no frills quality recorder, this is a good buy, I have no regrets. Next one will have a HDD, though...

First, the pluses:

ONE YEAR PARTS AND LABOUR WARRANTY! Can you believe that?

Recording quality very good at XP and SP. Menus easy to use, and navigation on disc is great. Seems to be of decent build quality, has a fan, a does not get hot. It probably the best built cheap DVD recorder I've seen at this price point.

Now the cons:

You'd expect a machine that could play DivX and Xvid to also play Video CD and Super VCD. IT DOESN'T--factory pressed or otherwise.

They put the bloody S-Video input on the FRONT of the machine, not in back. This is highly annoying.

Recordings at LP vary greatly depending on the source. This machine does not appear to do any filtering or processing of any kind, so the source material has to be good. LP recordings can look anywhere from Super VHS quality to EP VHS recordings. Cablecasts look appalling, but signals recorded from my HDTV receiver look pretty good.

I gave the machine 7/10 because I think its picture quality at the intermediate recording mode can use some improvement.

Otherwise, not a totally bad machine for $100 at BB.
With the 1 year parts and labour warranty, you could hardly go wrong if you don't mind the VHS-like quality of the LP recording mode.

Incidentally, the DVD+R discs made from this machine will be more compatible than the DVD-R ones recorded in VR mode. That is true of most machines. For those who don't know this, the VR mode for DVD-R is not the same as DVD+R, so don't be confused by the sales associates.

This machine is built by LG Electronics, by the way. It says so right on the box.

Cheers!
