This machine is horrible!! It can't play regular dvds at all it stalls and says the dvd is bad!! Even $30 dvd players can play a regular dvd. It has a mind of its own you can't control anything. I've managed to record a few movies off of a vcr but thats it. It has 6 outputs for 5.1 channels but no regular just left or right channel!!! How to do you connect the sound to anything!!!???

I went to the www.insignia-products.com website, they offer no manuals or even a place to email for tech support. This thing is most horrible device ever! I'm a die hard nerd/techie since birth and can't figure it out.

Never use this around a girl cause she'll hate you for being a loser.

Records RF input okay, in timer and LIVE modes. Tuner is medium quality but not as clear as your TV.

However, it has problems recording from Audio/Video inputs. It will record for 2 to 20 minutes, and then stop.

Not recommended.

Channel Scan:
This unit does not understand cable TV. The makers assumed you would use a cable box, or rabbit ears. So... Cables 2-6 are channels 001-005, 7-13 are 015-021, etc.

Why they don't have a cable tv scan I don't know.

The RF out is a simple pass through. It DOES NOT carry anything that the DVR puts out. If you don't have a tv that can take 3 rca plugs carrying composite video and 2-channel audio, you are out of luck.

I have a PlayStation2, and I had to plug that into the AV1 input of the DVR because I had to use my video-to-vga convertor to even see the DVR's output.

This device regularily loses all of its settings. This includes all of the rf channels, all of the dvd quality settings, the current time and date... Everything. This has happened three times in the four days since I bought the thing.

If you have a disk in the tray when you bring it out of standby, it assumes that you want to play the disk. What if I had it in rf-in mode and wanted to watch tv? They apparently think you're wrong to want to do anything other than watch dvd's.

They were able to record on dvd+/-rw ok, but they screwed up stuff that my decade-old VCR got right.

Overall rating, -5. This device sucks dead bunnies, and is going back to the store today.

Have also experienced the problems with the channel scan. However, the recorder allows you to "move" channels, so you can put the ones you watch all the time at the beginning... saves a lot of time.

Have used both DVD-RW and DVD-R media successfully.

One Warning... when editing the title of a recorded show (or whatever) DO NOT attempt to hurry the unit by pressing other buttons... it will make the recording un-viewable by any regular DVD player, as well as toast any items left on the timer list. Lost the first 4 hours of 24 because of this one.... :(

The recorder works fine at first. However, today my preset timers and channels got lost and when I rescan the channels, the channel lineup is all messed up. Now the lineup starts on channel 1 instead of channel 2.

I'm very upset that the model I purchased is very different than the display model (Bestbuy and Futureshop). The unit I brought home was missing the component video outputs, the S-video outputs, the digital optical outputs and the 5.1 channel audio output. It only had a composite video output and RCA audio outputs. What a rip off! Anyone else experience the same thing? Where can I get the version with all the features??

I'm going to bring this unit back as I feel I've been cheated.

The Insignia dvd recorder was purchased at Future Shop on Boxing Day. The price was $129 with an instant in-store rebate of $30 for a final price of $99.

The Insignia plays commercial dvd's as well as burned DVD+R\RW's. Has six recording modes, from HQ to EP+. With HQ, you have about 90 minutes of recording time with the DVD+RW's.

A real nice dvd recorder for the money. The only thing I can find fault with is the television channel scanning during the initial setup. It finds all the channels but not with the channel numbers associated with Rogers Cable. For example, TVO is channel 2 on Rogers but is recognized as channel 1 after the scan is completed. Rogers Sportsnet is recognized as channel 14 after the scan but is actually channel 22 on Rogers. When your programming to record, you have to use the channel numbers that are recognize during the scan. Virtually all the the channes recognized during the scan are off by + or - 1 from the actual channels on cable.

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong during the setup but if anyone with Rogers Cable in the Toronto area is able to scan the channels correctly, please let me know.

We have found two models of the IS-DVR1051. The first supported writting DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW and could play back divX movies recorded on CD-R media but was missing s-video and component output.

We returned the unit to get the version with the correct outputs thinking the rest would remain unchanged. This new unit doesn't support writting the minus R/RW's and could no longer play back divX movies (played back garbelled).

Good:
- able to record to both DVD+/-RW, DVD+/-R

A couple of problems:
- Hangs when paused (while playing) for a long time. It happened once, need to unplug power to reset. Haven't try to reproduce it.

- Cannot erase DVD-RW that I've burnt using a computer. Need to erase the disc in computer before writable.
