I've had this recorder for some time and recently it has stopped recognizing new, unformatted and previously burned DVD it had made.

I've read a few forums about the recorder and this seems to happen often to this unit.

It played normal, manufactured, stamped DVD's fine.

Being an electronics technician, I didn't have any problem with cracking the case.

After unplugging the unit, I carefully opened the opened the case, located the burner unit, removed the copper shield tape gingerly to keep from tearing it, and unscrewed the the screws in the top of the burner to remove the top from the case of it.

After using a soft clothe to gently clean the fine dust off the laser lens and exercising, manually, the laser carriage on it's track, I reassembled everything in the reverse order and plugged the unit back in.

I inserted the previously unrecognized DVD's and everything worked fine.

Hopefully it's not a quirk, but so far everything's operating as it should.

This machine has worked great for me. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 rating is because of the mono tuner and the clock that doesn't autoset. When I do record programs, though, I use the AV input from my digital top box and that gives me stereo. When doing a timed record, I set it for one minute early for the start and one minute late for the ending to make up for any clock drift variations. It's easy to just split them off and erase them. Just replaced the standard 80 GB IDE internal hard drive with a 320 GB drive. On the desktop computer, I hooked the old and the new drives together off the secondary IDE port as master and slave and transferred all files directly from one to the other. Installed the new drive and everything that was on the old drive was successfully on the new drive.

Very happy with this machine...

Great player, had questions when I first bought it after reading some previous reviews. I didn't update the firmware of this player out of the box, and it works like a charm. All features work as advertised. I have recorded many hours of TV, burned onto a DVD and played on other players. This player is saving me many VHS tapes a week that I would otherwise use. Before I had this player, I taped less than half of what I am recording now. I can't speak highly enough about how this player has worked for me.

Bought from Walmart for $280, if you have any concerns buy from Walmart and send it back if it does not work for you.

I too have had the machine not recognize it's on DVDs a little while after burning them. I've gone back and found quite a few that aren't recognized. I've used that verify the contents of a DVD, doesn't care if it's data or video, and some come back with errors saying, "Hardware I/O error reading an unnamed file." How do you get an unnamed file on a DVD? I'm using FUJIFILM DVDs, which for the most part haven't given me any problems. I'm thinking I'm going to switch to another brand and see if that doesn't help, one that's on the approved list, of course, but I could have sworn this was on their list.

Got this on ebay, brand new, for 180$. Loved it the first week - very easy to use, nothing fancy, no frills.
After one week the unit froze - would not boot beyond HELLO welcome message. Phoned Ilo, was put through reboot procedures - none of which worked, and the tech determined it was a known problem - some units freeze beyond repair.
Having purchased it on Ebay, my only choice was to send it to Ilo at my expense, for replacement.
7 weeks later replacement came. It was a used unit (but not the same one!) with visible scuffs and scratches. Oh well, I figured, as long is it works. Well, there was a reason why someone else had returned it - sound recorded through coax delivers annoying thump, however only heard at higher volume levels. I don't mind it so much as I don't record a lot through coax for keeps. Recording through s-vid and other cables is fine though, so copying my minidv tapes works and that's what I care about. Firewire does not function properly - causes momentary freezing in the connected camera.
I complained to ebay seller to no avail, however Paypal complaint process resulted in full refund - kudos, but... Recently I've discovered a disturbing issue - some dvdrs previously recorded on Ilo are no longer recognized by this unit, even though they play perfectly on a different machine. I'm using Ridata, 8xspeed.
I would gladly give this 10 for ease of use but Ilo tech treatment (sending a used and malfunctioning replacement) deserves 1. Compromise is 5.

Just received in the mail yesterday. I immediately tried upgrading with the file off of the internet. Didn't try it first. (Wish I would have) After upgrading, it started giving me an action error, can't remember what it is now. I tried upgrading half a dozen times, tried re-burning the CD in different ways. Didn't fix it. Started wondering if recording to the DVD would work. It worked fine. Couldn't record to the HD. Started thinking, if this was a PC, what would I do? Erase the HD. I found where there's a place to erase the disk and erased the hard drive. It works fine now. Go figure. I didn't read anywhere that I'm supposed to do this.

I have had this machine for quite a while. I have seen all these post that are negative and this is what i have found.
1 for those that have invalid disk issues
the problem is your disk not the player
read the faq on the suggested media
(by the way the ilo media sold in walmart is not from the same company so dont use it)
2 The blacker than black test issue was a firmware problem and was fixed with the Feb firmware release.
3 I saw a post about the tuner beeing mono(duh most tuners are, thats why for quality sake i dont use them)
4.Cutting comercials for burning to disk is possible and alot faster than trying to do the same thing on a pc.(also if the program is something you record all the time(in my case the races on nbc,you can setup index marks accordingly to make it even faster.)
I have used other recorder made by pioneer and sanyo that have nothing on tis recorder.they are clunky and delays when recording.when i hit record on this machine it records immediatly.
the only thing i wishthey had as a feture was a way to get rid of the menue on the disk so whe ni put in in the player it stars the recording.

DVD-recorder works ok. Recording to HDD work ok.
However, when editing, the unit locks up and freezes often. Only way to clear it up is to unplug the unit. Once this is done, the unit works ok, but the
recording that was being editing is lost! Either it
must be recorded again or not bother with it.
I had two, both did this and both returned.

Works as advertised. Got it on ebay and below Wal-Mart price. Once I figured out that you need to select source & target from the menu then it's a snap to record to disk or HDD. Better than Tivo. No subscription fee, only regret that it can't record in Hidef.

You get a lot of capability at a low price.
The hardware seems to work fine, but I have had a lot of problems with the software/firmware. The firmware updates seem to have corrected a number of problems, but some seem to remain. For example:

Corrupting +R disks (this is particularly troublesome since the information previously stored on the disk is no longer accessible).

Corrupted HD volumes (same comment as above).

Both of the above may be related to defragmenting, or failing to defragment soon enough. When talking to iLO service they said you should not defragment more frequently than every few months. I find that hard to believe - defragment intervals are a function of number of volumes and degree of fragmentation.

Another problem I have had is that the "computer" seems to "get into loops" that last a long time. This has caused the disk access to not open for hours and for me to "pull the plug". I have subsequently learned to give the recorder a lot of time to resolve the looping problem. Pulling the plug may in some cases resulted in the corruption of volumes and DVDs.

We purchased this unit from Wal-Mart on the interet. They did not have them in store. Hooked everything up. Found menu to operate just like a computer program. I could record on the DVD disk no problem, from the built in tuner or from my Satalite receiver. But can not get it to record on the HDD from same soarce. Tried for 2 days. Boxed back up. Plan to take it back to Wally World. When recording on the DVD is showed that it was recording. When trying the HDD is shows nothing. Was planning to use this in our motorhome. Wife has to record her soaps

This recorder has been wonderful. Took a chance and bought it cheap ($218.00 w/ shipping) from a righteous E-Bay seller. I can't imagine buying one of these without a hard drive. It's essential for any kind of editing and great for marathon "rent and burn" parties. I had no problem upgrading it with the "special" firmware from Guitarman (Thanks). The thing to remember about burning DVD's on this machine is to treat it like a computer. I was having problems with lock-ups on burned discs at the 90 to 120 minute marks, but as soon as I started powering down an re-booting after each session, I haven't had that problem since. Lousy TV tuner, but the timer works fine. Won't play a CD, but who cares? Great machine for the money. FYI the cheap GQ 4x and 8x DVD+R discs that are on sale often at FRY's, work great on this machine.

Pretty good player overall, especially for the money, $278 at Wal-Mart. 2 big issues: 1. There is a greenish tint to the unit while veiwing night time scenes. 2. After the last firmware update (March 2005) this unit will not play the garden variety compact disc.

I have found very little wrong with this unit. After updating to the latest firmware (1193) this recorder has performed as advertized--I downloaded the firmware right after purchase.
I do have two little things though, first I can't seem to copy jpeg's off onto the hard drive and second, I found you CAN record a program and Time Shift at the same time: (1) it needs to be a timer recording and (2) press the browser button on the remote then (3) press play and it should start from the beginning of the recording.

I finally gave up the ghost and returned the thing to walmart for the following reasons:
1. Mono Tuner
2. Random Lockups
3. Sometimes audio would repeat every 2 seconds when recording
4. Poor image quality/color

I tried updating the firmware a few times but it did not help. I'm gong to build my own recorded from an old PC instead. At least I can blame windows if something goes wrong. :)

Great product.

Black Level Issue:

The Ilo DVDHD04 does not pass pluge test (doesn't pass blacker than black level) for proper calibration of "brightness" settings on monitor. The unit needs a option for adjustment of IRE level 0 or 7.5IRE. I believe that the problem is that it is set up as a computer DVD player and not a home theater player.

This player will play my PAL dvd's and seems to output NTSC.

Bernie

This is a warning about the lastest firmware update from 1-17-05. Use at your own risk, high risk. The update before this one worked fine, but this one sucks. Two MAJOR issues have resulted since updating the firmware.

1) Clock freezes when the unit starts up to do a timer record. The channel doesn't change and either the wrong channel is recorded (or it doesn't record at all. Big problem

2) My disc tray doesn't open now. You hit the open button on the main unit or remote and it says OPEN/CLOSE but does nothing. So now, even if they make a firmware fix, I can't get the disc into the unit to fix it. Bigger problem.

This is all I've come across so far but I only installed the latest firmware update 5 days ago. I recommend waiting til they come out with a different fix before you try this one. You'll likely end up having to send the unit in for repair. I didn't spend $300 to send my unit in for repair a month after I bought it. And Wal-mart only has a 30 day return policy. I'm screwed.

Very good for the money. Walmart charges $278, and they are cheaper on ebay. The problem is: some of them freeze up. The first one I bought would freeze up when recording to +RW. When I returned it to Walmart, there was another that had been returned the same day for freezing up. No one at Walmart had heard of this happening before, and one of the salespeople assured me that ILO was a good company and that very few of them are returned. Maybe I was just unlucky.

I decided to try another one, and it seems to work fine. The quality of this one seems good. I called up ILO tech support late at night (it's 24 hour 7 days a week!) and the rep told me that if it freezes it's defective and that it is uncommon. He assured me that if mine is working now it probably won't start freezing up. I have the impression that this is a company that really wants to do things right. I asked if it's necessary to do any previous upgrades if I did the January update. He said if you do the latest, you don't have to do any others.

In terms of operation, it's pretty nice once you get used to its menus. The main functions are accessible from one button. The buttons on the remote are small, though, and the print is too small. Adding a title is not too convenient. It seems to be able to copy a disk that it made, but will not copy a +R disk made on a computer or a -R made on another machine. It won't read RAM at all, but it will play back other formats pretty well.

Edits are made by splitting, deleting, and recombining. It takes enough time that I wouldn't want to take out very many sections. DVD RAM is much better in this respect. What I plan to do mostly with this machine is take advantage of the fact that RW disks are cheaper than DVD RAM for shows that I want to watch only 1 or 2 times, and DVD+R seems to now be available on sale more frequently than DVD-R. Also, DVD+RW will play on most of my players so I can watch in another room without having to have a player that plays DVD-RAM.

I like the fact that this machine is about the same size as a standard DVD player, even though it has a hard drive. I think it is a little bigger than the other ILO model.

for correction, i am fixing my previous post about the il dvdrhd04. I meant that after i reformatted it IT STOPPED THE ERROR "HARD DRIVE RECORD FAILED" message. so the only problems I had were audio dropouts and problems with "infodisc" branded dvd media and other typical problems posted which are minor to me. I wonder will optodisc +rw media will work with this machine. Will anyone release a firmware update which allows bigger hdd to be used?

It sure beats a vcr for recording and editing video and digital television (Directv and Dishnetwork).

I bought this DVD recorder & HD unit with two goal; to catch those frequently missed episodes of CSI and Lost, and to made DVD copies of family home videos as well as my wife’s old VHS taped episodes of Martha Stewart (before prison.

I read, and reread, the reviews posted here as well as other sites (TechoLiO, Videohelp and AfterDawn) and decided that while a Panasonic, Pioneer or Toshiba may have provided me the peace of mind a "name brand" bring - the money spent above the $235 mark wasn’t worth it.

So, I went to trusty old Wal-Mart and picked up an iLO DVDRHD04 (Sep 04 on the box).

Before I even powered it up, I did three things:

1. I downloaded and read the user manual. Sounds silly, but reading the manual brought out the ease of using the On Screen Menus (OSM) - which allows the user to do nearly all functions with fewer button-strokes.
2. I downloaded the most current firmware: burnt on CD-R as mentioned in reviews.
3. I downloaded the most current Hack (kudos to Guitarman; http://www.ss3f.com/ilo/ ).

I had an internal debate with myself (the only debate you should ever have - you always win) and decided to go with the Hack from the start. Not that I planned on burning any DVDs - but the region free option works with some Japanese movies I have and with the macrovision removed I shouldn’t have the issues burning from my camcorder.

Once I reorganized my stereo system, pitching my old Laser disk player and moving my VCR where it only feeds the ilo - I powered the recorder up and dropped the firmware/hack disk inside.

The system ran up the hack, froze once at 99%, gave me an error - which I ignored and powered the system off and back on...the system finalized the firmware update and kicked out the CD.

I ran through the setup, date/time/video quality (SP).

I then played a couple of different DVDs - just to make sure the system was operating as a player, as well as testing a couple of backup DVD-Rs I have movies on and all went well.

I then went through the steps to setup timer operation and recorded a 30 minute HGTV episode and another 30 cartoon - to test timer operations, video quality and recording to the HDD. All went well, at SP the video quality was a match for live TV.

Next step was to record from the VCR to the HDD, to test the video input/external source quality. Again, the picture and sound were comparable.

I then tested three +R brand DVDs. I used the provided disk as well as Philips and Verbatim. I had confirmed that these brands had been tested by ilo, per their FAQ, though the Verbatim had only listed +RW not the +R I used. All three disks were burnt using the TV episodes I previously recorded; all three played on my normal desktop JVC DVD player as well as two PCs and my Playstation2. NOTE: finalizing the disk is much simpler using the OSM and Tools than the alternative longer way listed in the manual.

I also used the OSM to quickly record a live TV program when I had to run outside for a few minutes. Worked fine.

There are a few functions I haven’t used, but most are ones I didn’t buy the unit for anyway.

I have only found one annoyance with the ilo, and it’s more of a problem with the remote...the silly thing operates on the same frequencies as my JVC player and keeps powering up that unit as well. No harm, I just have to be careful when I operate it.

While I haven’t had the unit very long and may still run into some hiccups, the advice/forum feedback proved invaluable and has helped make my first run at desktop DVD recording more satisfying.

Comments:
The January 2005 upgrade fixed most of the lockups, but I still get a few. It also fixed the audio missing when finalized DVDs are played on other manufacture players and recorders. Note: a new recording must be made to have audio, previous recordings still have not audio even when copied.

I have difficulty splitting titles and adding thumbnails. The edit window video scene and the place the split or thumbnail are taken do not agree. Sometimes the split occurs as much as a second away from the edit window video scene.

I can single step ahead a few clicks, but that does not always get me the split exactly where I want it.

Ilo technical support suggested I exchange the unit, but this did not fix the problem.

Anyone else have this problem or have a fix?
