Just a short note for your information.

Ilo made by Cyberhome is out of business. A couple of months age the FBI and other US Federal and CA State officials comfiscated over 20,000 Cyberhome units, in the San Jose, CA area.

Cyberhome I believe is out of Fremont, CA or some place on the east bay. Any how Cyberhome was using Phillips technology in the DVD's without license.

Thats why there online site and phone don't work.

I read this in an industry magazine that for the life of me I can't remember, sorry.

My mother gave me an ILO DVDR05 ZU, and I have worked with the headaches it has given me. Overall, it has proven to be successful, although I have cussed it out when a recording fails for no obvious reason. My guess for a long time has been that the unit easily overheats because it will feel very warm to the touch.

This past week, the unit stopped recognizing recordable data. The only way that I could get it to try to utilize recordable data would be to insert a DVD+RW that was set up on another platform (i.e., my PC). It would try to reformat it but would fail at 80%. A web search yielded a good possibility as to the source of the problem, which is a failure in the power circuits. I found a repair guide but have yet to try it out. The suggestion of the author to install a fan to keep the unit from overheating is primo (but there is currently a broken link for the instructions on this suggestion). I am hoping to repair mine.

Of note, I found that Verbatim DVD+RW were the best option for the ILO DVDR05 ZU. Many other brands would fail completely, most notably Imation and Phillips. Staples store brand, which are made by Memorex, work okay about 75% of the time.

Ilo DVDR05 has been a real disappointment. It will not record any DVD's at all now after about 1 year. It has had problems off and on but now it gives me an error stating that the disc is not on the supported media list. Previously the worst problem was that the music on DVD recordings was warbly. I have tried both DVD-R and DVD+R. Even though you are supposed to use DVD+R/RW, DVD-R worked before as did the DVD+R. I am going to try another brand of DVD disks but if that does not work I am going to trash it and find a better recorder.

Like many of the latest post's i just finished reading here, after approx. 1 year of owning my (DVDR05/MU1 November 2005) it has just completely crapped out. It never did play divx/xvid very well. Some xvid movies it was just fine but some it would play real jerky or not at all while my other expensive divx players had no prob. My problems began a few months ago when it would no longer burn and dvd+r's. Then later it wouldn't burn any dvd-r's, then it wouldn't even PLAY and dvd's at all, even retail dvd's. So now it's down to only playing "some" xvid cd's and thats about it, I went out and bought a new RCA DRC257N today to replace it.

I will probably avoid any Cyberhome or ilo products in the future.

Ok, I have left previous comments that it was picky about recording to Sony 8X discs.

Now something major has happened.

Yesterday it began with the recorder shutting off by itself twice.

Then I had a movie sitting in the drawer and it wasn't playing and then all of a sudden the movie started to play. I tried to eject the movie but it wouldn't. So I had to disconnect it and replug it in and push eject, That worked.

Now the major problems started.
First at times I had no audio at all, from any source.
Then the video started looking strange.
The time display that was on the front of the machine disappeared.

Now all I get is no audio, video with strange white herringbone patterns. And the display is displaying a strange pattern.

Looks like it went out on me.

I would advise everyone to stay away from the ILO brand . It's pure junk.

I purchased this DVD recorder about a year ago. My sister bought one about 6 months later. Mine worked fine, until I unplugged it a month ago and it didn't turn on-high pitched noise when plugged in. My sisters experience the same thing a few days earlier. My sister's had always had problems of recording on the same DVD+R's that mine was able to record on. These were March and April 2005 ZU models. I think these recorders were designed to last for only 1 year-no more. I went back to Wally World(Wal-Mart) and noticed that they don't carry the ILO's anymore...I wonder why? LMAO. POS recorders....STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!!!!!!!

As with other users, this unit IMMEDIATELY started reporting "bad disk" after recording. Some recorded and I could read them before finalizing, but once "finaled" the recorder stopped recognizing them. They were also unreadable by other machines I have. The only one that has worked is a DVD+RW disk, but given the coaster status of everything else I tried in it, I don't give it long.

This is a ZU model dated January '06. Don't buy it.

After owning the unit for 6 months it's started to act up.

First when I would play back recordings certain scenes would be jumpy. For instance, when someone would move through a scene it wouldn't be smooth, rather it would be jumpy.

Now the worse thing has happened.

Now when I make a recording the following happens.

It records to the disc OK.

When I stop recording and it says about pushing the Title button.

When I do, instead of the Title Menu coming up a little pop up in the right corner says "Disc Empty".

I push eject and don't finalize the disc and when I look at the disc I can see that it has been recorded to.

Sometimes I can Name the Titles, but when I record again the same "Disc Empty" message comes up when I stop recording.

Now all the recordings that I did in the past plays fine as do regular DVD's.

It seems that now it won't recognize the disc once I recorded to it.

Looks like I'm going to have to contact ILO to see what's exactly wrong. It should still be under warranty as it's less than a year old.

I have the Ilo DVDR04 and it's recording picture is jumpy and blurry so I went to Walmart and bought this DVDR05. I also previously just ordered the DVDR05 online too and that one is on it's way. Had to have 2 for the amount of tapes I have to record for business. There's so many problems with this recorder. Tried 2 different brand DVD-R, at 3-hour or 4-hour mode, it would stop recording and says disc full...the VHS movie still plays. Ilo needs to check their compression level setting in these recorders, it's finishing too fast making discs full too soon. Tried Ritek DVD+Rs, while preparing discs, sometimes says Bad Disc, a 3-hour recording still says Disc full too soon and tried finalizing, said Disc Not Compatible. This one is the ZU version, Updated the firmware, ran Frontend first, then Backend, don't know why 2 is there. No explanation on website, and i'm not bothering with TechSupport. After firmware upgrade, I put in a Ritek DVD+R, preparing disc stuck at 99%, had to pull the plug. What a piece of crap. Tried a DVD-R, it prepared the disc rather quicker than any other time. Recording in 3-hour mode, after VHS finished playing, I pressed stop, disc icon spinning for a while, then message said "Poor Disc Notification - Disc recording not successful, please change disc! If you look on the bottom of both DVD-R and DVD+R disc burned, looked like there's a big gap during recording, like it's empty in between recording. I have spent so many hours on this piece of crap half A55 recorder, ILO and Walmart should pay me for the blanks waisted! These 2 companies know what a POS product they are selling and they continue to sell. A petition needs to be made so a big lawyer can sue them and reimburse customers for pain and suffering! When the one I ordered online comes in, I'm going to return it right back along with a big bag filled with my Doo-Doo. POS A55 product, same with the DVDR04, crap, crap, crap. Hey ILO, why don't you manufacture Doo-Doo instead, seem you're pretty good at it.

Plus you will get better reading capability on DL disks.

First of all. Everyone MAY be wrong about what type of media the Ilo dvd05 records. When I first purchased it from walmart it would not use my pioneer dvd+r or my memorex dvd+r media. Sure, it would format and record but when I tried to FINALIZE it said "disc error" or "disc bad" and I would be stuck with coasters; I had wasted 8 dvd+rs that way.

I then decided to EXPERIMENT with my GQ dvd-rs and guess what? They formated, recorded and finalized, BUT I could only play them on the ilo recorder. I couldn't play them anywhere else.

So, THEN I downloaded the upgrade for the BACKEND of the ilo dvdr05. I have the "ZU" model, not the "MU" (you can see your model on a sticker on the bottom of the player).

I can now burn GQ DVD-R media. The specific brand is: GQ DVD-R 8x (not the 1x - 8x). I have burned and finalized 13 dvds so far and they play on ALL MY DVD players and my computers. I have not downloaded and installed the FRONTEND upgrade because I don't know what it really does.

IRONICALLY my Memorex 8x DVD+R STILL do not work, but who cares. I have tons of GQ dvd-rs.

While Ilo's website says GQ is a recommended media (listed last among all the brands), NOTHING says that dvd-rs should work, but for me they do!

My BIGGEST problem is that EVERYTIME you turn on your tv and the ilo, you have to select source and then select the tv tuner. Why isn't the turn MEMORIZED??? I turn my tv off on channel 3; I turn the tv back on, it REMEMBERS channel 3. I turn my vcr off on channel 4. I turn it back on, it remembers channel 4. I turn the ilo off on channel 4. You turn the ilo back on and you have to select source and scroll across to tv tuner. It is a waste of time if you want to record something RIGHT NOW!

Additionally, I HATE the fact that when you finalize a dvd, you HAVE to have a menu. I don't want a menu! I want to record my movie and then just pop it in a player and watch it. Why not create a recorder that allows you to have the menu at the END of the program?

The other thing I hate is the TIMER! You set it for a specific time and sometimes it will NOT record at that time; it will start a minute later or the clock will change time. That's ODD! You cannot tell the ilo to record channel 3 from 1am to 2am and THEN record channel 4 from 2:01 am to 3:01 am. You just can't. It won't do it. But, if you have digital cable, just have your digital cable change the channel for you.

The picture quality is as good as my cable resolution (analog cable on some channels and digital on others (cox cable)). The sound is OKAY; not as good as my digital channel sound; everything is mono. But, it does BEAT my vcr.

So, all in all I'm satisfied. I can't beat 98.00. I just can't!

Well, I will answer my own question:

YES, but,

ONLY the MU1 model plays DVD+R-DL. The MU model does NOT play double layer. It displays "no disk".

I finally found out the different between the two models.

Have not tried -R of any kind because I don't use them.

One note here: I only tried some Verbatim +R-DL disks. I don't know how any of these models behave on other brands of media.

So far the MU1 receives my 10/10 as it seems to be able to do everything. Including the region free hack!

This unit has done everything I have asked it to do. While only using DVD+R and +RW, I have not experienced zero problems. Recordings have been from 2 hour mode all the way to 7 hour mode with no problem and very little drop in quality. The remote is well laid out and easy to use. This unit has replaced my VCR as the primary unit for recording tv shows. So far, I have found that a DVD+RW holds up to multiple use much better than a video tape used for the same purpose. The only knock I have, and I am probably doing something wrong, is the DVD+R I burn on this unit will not play on my home DVD player. They will play on my laptop. Great unit, I have recommended it to others.

A few more notes:
The ZU went back and I got an MU1 (I already have an MU). I am trying to find out the difference between the two. So far I can say that the region hack works on both of them identically. That's a good thing.
As Michael C reported the firmware available online for MU models does not work with the MU1.

In terms of playback: I noticed a jitter on a divx 640/480 file with the MU1. Strange. It surely was not there on the MU. I will keep testing different formats/codecs.
Both models are not compatible w DTS audio! (will not play it).
Both can read Multisession DVD+R

On the recording part: Both units record in MPEG2 with MP2 audio. Pretty standard, the resulting dvd plays w/o problem on each unit and on my computer. Did not try on other dvd players.

Media: I used Memorex DVD+R and Maxell DVD+RW. Work fine. Both the MU and MU1 units can record on dvd formatted on the other unit. Nothing abnormal so far.

Last night I decided to see if I could record a dvd with copy protection. I hooked up my other dvd player and started recording. I was expecting for the recorder to give me an error or something because off the copy protection on the disc but it didn't. I finalized the disc after it was done and it was a perfect copy. I did the same thing with vhs with macro on them...also came out perfect. I was very surprised because it's states right on the box that it will not recorded protected movies. I am very happy with this machine.
I find that Imation DVD+R work great. Haven't tried any dvd+rw yet, so I'm not sure which brand works.

Well after reading about how much better the MU model was I went to Wal-mart to trad-in my ZU for a MU. I was surprised to find a MU1 instead, so I got it. I can confirm it still plays DivX/Xvid and all the same files it played before. The tuner quality does not seem as good as the ZU, but its not too bad. It seems to have trouble with dark areas from the tuner, kinda wierd.

They do not have the firmware updates on the website, you have to email and ask for them. Didn't notice any changes from the update though. I did notice that it doesn't have the 7hour mode like the ZU did, but no biggy since I never used it anyway. Overall I'm pleased with this unit.

Just bought this unit, tested several media formats without any problems. Tested taping from vcr using newer movies and it recorded them without any macro. Good quality tv tuner, and recordings. No problems so far.
I had bought a CyberHome just before this one and the tv tuner quality was awful as well as the recordings, so I am quite happy with this one for the $98.74 I paid for it.
Hopefully it will be somewhat of a durable machine and last a while.

In addition to my previous report and to Michael C report:

After I read things about the ZU model I went to Wally and purchased a ZU model in addition to my MU one. The ZU model is also made in Nov 2005. I have to confirm Michael's report. It does not play DIVX/XVID. As a matter of fact it is kind-of blind. It doesn't see any files if it considers it cannot read them. My MU model is able to display the contents of directories even if it cannot play the files.

Another thing: My previous reports about issues with DIVX encoding were in fact due to larger frame sizes. It cannot read anything larger than 720/576! (Yes it accepts PAL resolution!). I have tried different MP3 bitrates (up to 256) as well as up to 5Kb/s video bitrate and it works fine. I don't really know where the limit is.

And one last thing:
I saw at Wally an MU1 model. There are still MU models there but the MU1 must be somthg new. Maybe other postings will tell us what's the deal with it.

I purchased this unit from Wal-Mart 4 days ago for $98. I have one of the ZU units that was produced in November 05. I have used only DVD+RW disc so far and have not had a coaster yet. I've recorder about 7 hours of video so far. I did have one problem with one of the disc, some kind of error and I lost the videos on that disc. I did not lose the disc though. Just had to reformat it and it was ready for use again.

I have noticed that some times when you first use the unit to record, it records about 3 seconds then skips about 3 seconds, then continues to record normally. This happens rarely and only when you first try to record.

Let me go ahead and get this out of the way, the remote SUCKS. Every button is exactly the same shape and it's hard to tell which button your pressing without looking at it. Unlike my TV remote which has different shaped buttons, I never have to look at it.

I've read that some people on here have been able to watch DivX videos. This does not work for me. I don't know if it's because I have the ZU chipset or what. I have been able to play MPEGs though. By the way I burn everything to a DVD+RW, I don't know if that's a problem or not. If any has any tips on playing DivX please email me at shadowfoxzero0@yahoo.com

On the front of the DVD Recorder it has a icon that says "Windows Media Player". I assumed that meant it could play wmv/wma files but I haven't had luck with either one. I could be doing something wrong though. Could someone clear this up for me.

The quality of recordings are good and I have been able to play the DVDs on my other DVD players and computer. Overall I like this unit and you can't beat the price!

For MU Version

1: First, to explain how the firmware update works:
Download the ***Backend***!!! CD image from their ftp site. They also have some nice girls pics there...

The image file is in *.nrg format. I don't know what this is... I assume is some NERO specific crap...

I use SUSE Linux OS with KDE desktop and K3B-CD/DVD burning app. K3B opens the file after one chooses to force open it. Initially, it will not recognise it as a standard image file. One has to choose "all files" in the opening dialog and then click on the file which is successfully opened and the checksum verifies.

K3B says it is an ISO file so why the .nrg extension?
Why can't they just supply us with a standard *.iso file like all normal people do? If u have trouble try renaming the file with **.iso extension maybe it helps.

In any case, after burning the image onto the cd all you have to do is to power on the unit and then insert the cd. After a brief wait in which the unit reads the cd you will get a small dialog window warning you that the upgrade may not conform with the hardware and asking if u want to proceed. If u are sure that u have an MU unit and the proper MU upgrade say yes.
A progress gauge appears and when done a success message. I guess if u don't get the success message as I did it's time to return the unit to Walyworld...

Don't ask me what the upgrade does in the performance of the unit cuz I don't know. Maybe someone else...
Another thing : when I updated the current version was V4.89

2: I did perform the change to region free and it worked. Exactly as explained earlier by johnvan another MU user (Thank You!). With the 169518 code.

3: The unit works with Xvid AVI files but some don't work. I will do some more testing and report back. It may have a framesize limitation or a bitrate one.

4: I also don't know exactly what are the problems reported with the AC3 audio. Mine plays clips with AC3 with no problem. Even before the firmware upgrade. Will test more..

Got this unit (ZU model)at a pawn shop for 49.00 but it may still be going back. The only media I have is DVD-R and DVD+RW well the -R works fine though I have to "erase" the blank -R disc to prepare it (I guess I am formatting it) like I said it records fine to these prepared -R discs. What it won't record to is my memorex DVD+RW discs.it will read ones that I have recorded on a different recorder but will not recognize the blank DVD+RW media at all....I guess if a;ll I want to record to is DVD-R then this will do
