It worked well until 5 days ago. Now it doesn't read DVDs. Does anyone know the replacement part for optical unit? It continues reading CDs supports.

An amazing player/recorder. Has got all features except recording in 16:9 IFO setting, which makes an 16:9 film looking tall and skinny on a 4:3 TV.
I record on RW and uses IFOEdit on my PC to change to 16:9 and then reburns on a DVDR.
Maybe a FW update is coming?

Purchased two of these units (one for me and one for my dad). My dads failed after the first day, coming up with "hello" on the screen, looking around I found out this is a known problem. I got a replacement from scan and now works like mine. One other issue is they lock-up once in a while, and the only way to turn it back on is to power it off at the plug! This wasn't good when doing a timer record! I tried the latest firmware but had no joy with the problem, so I download and installed the firmware from H&B drx-430(same machine different badge). It now works a treat and can even plug an old 20Gb HDD into the USB to watch Divx from it! Would recommend this player to anyone who wants a cheap recorder and is willing to try a different firmware!!!

(Adapted from my Amazon.co.uk review)
Very robustly constructed and, I think, looks very classy. The Ellion's extreme slimness, the LED, and the disk-tray hidden behind a contour-following, black, drop-down panel, all enhance the impression that this recorder has evolved beyond the legacy of VHS design.

Divx compatibility has been very good, however the player doesn't appear to be handling 16:9 screen-sizing properly as it cuts off the top and bottom extremities of the picture (yes, it has been set-up for 16:9, and my very cheap Skyworth handles the same files without similar problems). Original DVDs, back-ups of originals from X-Copy Express and DVDs authored on Nero Reloaded and DVD Santa have all been handled without problem.

DV-In: once your DV camcorder is connected to the DV-In (nicely hidden on the front panel) you can control all the camcorder functions from the Ellion's remote. Pressing "Rec" automatically sets the camcorder playing and starts recording. (The Firewire socket on the 530 is a four-pin; probably like the one on your camcorder and not your PC) Moving movies off DV and onto DVD could not be less hassle-free - if you're happy not editing. Personally, I make master-copies on the Ellion, then move these recordings to my PC to edit and re-author.

Set-up is extremely easy. The tuner is high quality and surprisingly sensitive, picking up more marginal signals (and setting the clock at the right time) than my JVC television's tuner. My unit is hooked-up to my Sky digital box, via SCART, accepting RGB. If your TV does not have a SCART, S-Video, or A/V input, be aware that the aerial-lead from the 530 does not provide an RF-out signal.

Recording quality is exceptional. The four-hour EP setting is good enough for day-to-day needs, SP and HQ are as good as faultless to my eye - the quality of your input is more likely be the limiting factor. Ease of navigation is greatly enhanced by the ability to auto-add chapters every five minutes during a recording.

A Menu screen shows what you've recorded onto the disk and what remaining time is available for new recordings. Each new recording automatically receives an Index Picture (which you can change later through the Title Edit facility, if desired), so you can always be sure what's on a disk and, even more importantly, if you are using +RW disks, what you are about to erase or over-write.

Timer recordings: there is no Videoplus so all recordings are programmed manually. I do have a gripe that the unit always has to be instructed to record the SCART signal each time rather than defaulting to the last setting used.

I have had one problem with blocky playback from a Philips DVD+RW disk. However the problem appears to have been resolved by fully erasing the disk before using it again in earnest - all subsequent recordings on the same disk have resulted in perfect playback (it could even have been the signal being received from my Sky dish!)

The root-menu has also had some problems. After changing the index-pictures, twice the title-menu has not displayed the recorded titles properly, even though the player still recognises that they are there and you can play them okay. The remedy is to re-index-picture any blank titles (even if the menu looks as if it has gone forever) and all the titles on the disk are then restored on the menu - the titles themselves are not lost, so don't reformat or erase the disk, they just don't display on the root-menu. However, this has not reoccured recently.

Splitting titles: once it reaches 98%, you still have another 4-5 minutes to wait, so be patient, it hasn't locked-up, it will *eventually* move to 100% and finish processing. By the way, despite the issues mentioned above, editing titles is a breeze from a user-interface perspective as all the functions are activated by one button on the remote, then on-screen navigable menus.

I suspect that a firmware upgrade from Ellion would solve the 16:9 picture-sizing issue, but that all the other niggles are media-related rather than anything inherent in the recorder (a friend bought the same model at the same time as me and has experienced no similar problems with TDK-branded disks).

All in all, when you consider the features of this supposedly budget machine, I consider the Ellion 530 to be outstandingly good value and straightforward *better* than many of the machines carrying big-name brands!

Great spec machine that looks nice too.

All divx movies tested on it only played in the correct apsect ratio when the recorder was manually set to NTSC - even PAL-spec avi's :-(

DVD-RW recording seems to be pot luck - recording manually seems to work ok, but using Timer Record usually ends up with the program getting 'lost' on the disc... most annoying, having bought dvd+rw packs from 2 different manufacturers trying to find a brand that works.

I've tested 2 seperate units now, and both experienced random lock-ups every now and again and manually unplugging the unit was the only way to power it off.

The tech support (via email) for Ellion Digital is non-existant... ironic as their website gives the impression that they're out to look after the customer.

I had high hopes for this machine but feel badly let down.

Even though other people on here recommend it, I'd have to say shop around and consider alternative machines.

Really great DVD-Recorder, plays DIVX with no problems. Recording is also of good qualtiy, depending on how long the recording will take.
I also bought this recorder from Scan.

Well I bougth this DVD Recorder, because I wanted a DVD Recorder that could also play XviD video...
Getting any info on what this recorder would play is very hard (even the english manual doesn't mention MPEG-4/XviD/DivX).

But I got it and it works :)

All XviD and DivX videos I've tried have worked so far, but I haven't checked enough info yet...I'll try and report back.

The first problem I ran into was the main SCART Socket had an obstructed pin, but once that was sorted all has been fine. Records great (only tried 1 Nashua DVD+RW so far (works fine))

I'll try and post more info soon, but as of writing this, I'm very happy with this XviD Player/DVD Recorder/Player.

ps
I bought it from www.scan.co.uk
