I purchased the repackaged LiteOn 1101 DVD RW drive last year under the Presidian[R] brand name. [the 5505 model is the OEM 'internals' in many other re-labeled, re-branded units and experiences the similar "Invalid Disc" error message from what I have read on the WWW].
Recently the Presidian-branded model started reporting "Invalid Disc" whenever new media was inserted -- all new media [!]. Also, old recordings (dub from camcorder to disc) that had played back in the past were no longer working on this one, but were on a Sony.
So I did a little research where it was suggested to open up (well, it was past warranty) and actually "clean" the lens using a "Q-tip[R]" and ethanol.
First, I disconnected all cables, ***especially the power cable***. Carefully removing the five cover screws (3 black in the back, two chrome on the side) that held the top lid in place, the insides were then available. A fine black soot had accumulated, hardly what I would think of as "really" dirty -- but in laser optics, this matters.
Next, two black screws that held a cover over the lens assembly were removed, and the internal cover removed. On the bottom of the unit is a small light blue plastic slide lever that opens the tray when the unit is powered off. This opened the tray.
This also exposed the lens, which was gingerly cleaned using a 40% alcohol solution and a cotton swab. Also dust was "blown out" using compressed air. Follow-up to this, all other signs of dirt were removed using more cotton swabs. Lastly, the inside of the covers were cleaned.
The unit was reassembled in reverse order.
The connection to the TV unit was reconnected as before. New media was inserted and it formatted just fine.
Seems this unit draws in a good deal of air through that small fan in the back, and this in turn, necessitates a frequent cleaning of the optics.
I did not try a "non-wet" cleaner, available at many stores, and that might have been a simpler alternative for those not wanting to open the case and reassemble.
Note bene: This story makes no warranty for its applicability to any individual situation; it just documents what was my experience. I hope it is helpful. -- Jaculis.Org |

| We record live video via Firewire and it has worked well. Occasionally we have gotten a strobe effect of the on screen movement, that is really the only clitch. Our recordings are on the two hour per DVD and the reliabilty and the quality (no dropped frames, no freezing up) has been good. I am guessing we have recorded 150 - 200 disks. If I can resolve the strobe issue I would buy several more. |

This unit is a good recorder and a so-so player. From what I can tell it is a rebadged Liteon LVW-1101.
After aquiring a nice selection of different media from several manufactures to try to get a Cyberhome DVR-1200 to work (took that POS coaster maker back to Walmart), I can say that this thing has no trouble even with cheap media. I've been working it hard backing up my VHS library and have burned at least 25 DVD+R's and 8 DVD+RW's with not a single coaster. I have tried TDK, Sony, Memorex, GQ, Hypermedia, Fuji and Imation media with it. All work well.
The only things I miss on the recording side are:
1. No way to edit out commercials before finalizing the disc. It has no editing capabilities at all.
2. No S-Video inputs or outputs! Picture still looks good with composite but I can't help but feel I'm losing some quality.
There no real problems with playback quality, but the Guider menu system that makes this machine easy to operate when you first get it requires many button presses to get to a lot of basic functions like zooming and subtitles. I would have liked a few more dedicated functions added to the remote.
A few commercial DVD's don't start correctly and jump into the middle of the movie. A few play normaly, some take 30 seconds or more for the menus to come up and some won't play at all. Unit reports 'Invalid Disc'. No problems with any disc I have recorded on this machine itself or made on the computer, only commercial DVD's have issues. It's probably a firmware problem that will be worked out soon (I hope).
This unit plays XviD and newer DivX pretty well, no DivX 3.11 support though. It plays a lot of XviD that my old Phillips DVP642 wouldn't play, but won't play the older DivX that the DVP642 would.
The most bothersome thing about this machine is the way it handles data files on CD and DVD. You can't get a directory listing on MP3 or AVI collections. You can only hit 'Next' and 'Previous' to move blindly from one title to the next. On an MP3 collection with 50 or 60 songs on it, it is a pretty clumsy way to navigate. If they come out with firmware to fix this I'll give this machine a 7, but for now it's a solid 6.
After I wrote this review, I decided to check the Digital Max website for firmware before I sent it. I installed version DMMBU018.DA3 when I first bought the machine last week. The new version on the web site is DMMBU018.DA6 and it fixed the problems I had with at least two commercial DVD's. As long as it doesn't turn the unit into a coaster maker it looks like a good upgrade. Everthing else in this report was based on results with the DMMBU018.DA3 firmware.
Bottom line, if you need a cheap recorder, this one works pretty well in that capacity. I'd keep another machine online to handle the tasks of a player though. This one has some issues.

| Unsure about all other features, but the tuner on this recorder inputs only in monaural. Any signal entering the ANT input is converted strictly to mono. Other versions of this player (Presidian PDR-3222 [Radio Shack], LiteOn LVW-1011HC [BBY]) offer an identical or near-identical feature set with the addition of a stereo tuner. Will return and buy an alternative. |

| Bought this for my son, I had to set it up. This is a good DVD recorder to buy before we take the plunge. Can not believe how easy this machine is to use. Still need to hone up on all the tech information, so until I can grasp the technology of DVD recorders this suits our need just fine. |

For the money, this little box is well worth the green.
Setup is dead easy.
I purchased this for my older parents as an easy way for them to backup my little brother's football tapes. They don't usually understand how to set the clock on the VCR but were able to understand the Guider without a question.
With 5 levels of quality (1 to 6 hours) there's plenty of choice. The lowest quality does show the usuall mpeg2 blocks and bleeds, but it is completely watchable and if you're not looking for archival, is good enough for viewing your favorite tv show.
LP, 3 hour mode, is the lowest quality I could choose without seeing a lot of mpeg2 encoding issues.
I had no problem finalizing the DVD+R and viewing on all my DVD players. I was using Sony 8x DVD+r's that were recently on sale in a 50 disc cakebox.
I'll report back when I've had it burning for a couple of months. But for now, I couldn't be happier.
Now, if I could just get my father to stop asking me how to make coppies of his rental DVD's with this unit, I'd be happier... |

I connected my DV camcorder with a FireWire cable (not included) and recorded to DVD+R. The process worked fine: the recorder controlled the camcorder and stopped automatically at the end of the tape. It was very simple. I recorded 2 1-hour miniDV tapes to a DVD.
My problem is that the resulting DVD had various glitches: jumps in the video (probably several dropped frames) and one point where the image froze for several seconds before resuming. I'm hoping for a firmware update ... or a recommendation to use some other recording speed (I used SP).
Also, I've heard that some DVD-recorders capture the timecode from DV camcorders and make it available as subtitle information; but the DMDR0501 doesn't (as far as I can tell from the manual and on-screen setup). The DVD Titles have a timecode based on when the DVD was recorded, and a Title name that you can edit. I set it up to make chapter marks every 10 minutes; this works in that I can hit the "chapter forward" button on my DVD player (an Apex), but the "scene selection" menu only shows two entries, one for each 1-hour DV tape I put on the DVD.

| Just purchased this from Circuit City for $75. So far, so good. Interface is easy to deal with and so far has worked with the included +rw disc and DVD+R disc (Verbatim 4X - RICOHJPNR01). The DVD+R works in my other DVD players while the +RW does not. Haven't quite figured out how to "rip" files from the disc to my computer yet.... |
