When I first purchased this player I had it about 2 weeks before the thing locked up, apparently the power supply died on it. Cyberhome had a recall on the faulty units at that time and they fixed it for free, it has been fine since then. I did eventually have to change out the drive from the original Cyberhome drive, which was always flakey, to a NEC ND-1100A drive because it stopped reading discs. The NEC drive is much better at reading discs of all types and now it seems to be a solid unit. Don't buy unless you are willing to deal with the quirkiness of this unit.

Doesn't record my home VCR videos from my Magnavox TV/VCR combo to the Cyberhome 1500. It records TV programs, but when I play VCR tape and hit record on DVD recorder, ERROR shows. Have disconnected cable, as I did on my old Samsung TV/VCR combo, but still doesn't work.

Help!

Thx,
Quest

I have had this DVD recorder for almost two years now. This is my third one (returned the other two due to problems). This unit works fine after I updated the BIOS through the Cyberhome Update site. I have NO complaints about it AT ALL. Works fine and the disks work fine on all my other DVD players. I would reccomend this recorder to anyone that wants to record and record cheap.

This was my first DVD writer /recorder.
I waited for the cheapest unit on the shelf to fall through $250.00 and I got just that: the cheapest unit.
Let me first say that it does work. It burns DVDs that sometimes look better than therir sources..
Now let me say that it does not work well.
A bizzare feature is the distinction between "on, Off, and Standby".
Freqently when I attemtpt to bring the unit from "standby" to " On" it locks up, requiring a re boot from the back of unit power switch.
The tuner - the part that receives input on a standard coaxial cable, proved to be monaural. My first entire crop of disks had a strange flat sound until I figured it out. This is not mentioned in the manual.
Stereo sound is nicely relayed through the component video cables.
Its fortunate because the cr*ppy monaural receiver was causing interferennce through its coaxial feed.
If I do not change the default disk name and pic the disk will not play on other units.
The hide chapter feature is at best ignored by other units.
It runs hot. I have finally propped it up on 3Liter soda bottle caps with an little box fan blowing over it.
Sometimes it just goes " on strike". When I attempt to set the timer it just throws out " Input Error" and refuses the order. Only a few hours in standby seems to cure this.
When it isnt on strike, the timer feature works well.
I am sure that if i tried to use the other features in the manual that there would be more trouble.
In its second year of life it had become necessary to reboot nearly every use. It is used with component video cables and an upstream VCR for copying of VHS tapes and channel selection.
The bulky remote's " pause " button does allow simple editing. The pause is crisp and produces good results.
The case is sturdy and attractive. The panel layout is handy and functional.
WHy the h*ll have I put up with it?
Many of the problems didnt really become apparent until it was out of warranty. And my paltry wages mean that I need to flog this crudely engineered beast as far as it will go before replacment.
It has been superceeded at Cyberhome, but this one is so very bad that I will return to Sanyo, Sharp, or perhaps Emmerson when the old dog finally dies.

The power supply in these units tends to go bad due to overheating but can be repaired inexpensively and made reliable by adding a small fan. There is info on that here, http://www.drx9000repair.netfirms.com

Target Store did a sale on this model for $99.00
Works fine just don't expect grand things from a small unit. it does out perform it's price tag.
Over heats, (no fan to cool) can only play DVD recordings with chapter edits in the same unit. Compatable to other units but custom edits cannot be read by other units even Cyberhome models including the 1530 which is intended as the improved version of the 1500

Purchased at HSN Dec 2003, returned for locked drawer January 2004, it failed again November 2004. Tried every trick I knew to open drawer, including: there is a button on the DVDR unit inside the case, just below the drawer. Supposedlyt if you power down, then on while pushing button, drawer may open. Mine didn't. I made a lot of DVD+R's and DVD+RWs with this unit and was generally happy with it, but its a doorstop now. I may try attaching a DVD-Recorder inside of it just to see if it works. The replacement URL for Cyberhome doesn't work. I bought another no name DVD Recorder at Walmart with a three year replacement warranty. Appears to be generic unit with "Balance" brand name. May be WalMart brand, they have Lite-on with their own name it appears. Balance has more limited features, but it works so far after two months and about 50 recordings.

I bought this unit June of 2004 and it died on me Jan of 2005. I called the customer support and they asked me to return it to them (my shipping cost) and they will send a new one to me. He said it will be DVR-1500C model. Today I got the new unit and I don't see any mentioning of the mode 1500C but the firmware and the BIOS have been changed to Dec 2004. The unit was manufactured in Jan of 2005. I hope this one works well. Let's cross our fingers.

Iloved this recorder until it did the usual, won't eject the disc. My disc is still in the drive. I took the cover off and saw that it was just a bare drive the same as in my computer. I took the drive out of my computer and hooked it up with the same cables. it looks like crap because you can't put the cover back on it. But it works fine. I think it works better than it did before.

Do not purchase.

The first unit I got lasted 3 weeks and then the hardware hit it.

Returned it at cost for repair.

Lasted a week before second failure and then the Product recall.

Took the option of upgrading to the 1530. Got the new unit delivered (again at my shipping cost) only to find the disc tray will not open. Major hardware error and the helpfull (NOT) customer service have requested I send the unit back again for repair.....oh at my cost : (

The DVD Recorder worked fine for the first 5 1\2 months and then it started giving problems. It just stopped pulling up DVD+R's that were recorded on it and it would not finalize any DVD+R's. I sent and e-mail to the technical department of the Cyberhome Company and that was 2 weeks ago. I have received no answer from them. There must be a problem with this model because Wal-Mart refuses to carry it anymore because of several being brought back defective.

I posted comments in the past about this unit. I have had it for about 6 months and generally it worked pretty well for a cheeper unit. However recently it started having problems. It frequently would only display "Cyberhome", none of the controls would work and the drawer won't open. I repeatedly turned it on and off with the switch on the back and after a number of attempts I could get it to work. The good news is that it is a very common problem and Cyberhome has a FREE repair or replacement deal even if your unit is out of warranty. Visit http://www.cyberhome.com/recorders_special_offer.asp to get the details.

I've had the Cyberhome DVD Recorder for about 8 months now. I've upgraded the firmware as new versions were released. Overall, for the price the recorder is okay. There is a couple of problems I have with this recorder, however that I feel are very serious. Almost every time I record something using LP speed, when the discs are finalized they will not play in my DVD Players. I occassionally get errors when finalizing at other speeds, but it seems that LP is a no-go. Also, discs recorded on this player will not play or read on my computer (or any of my 4 computers). In fact, the computer will lock up when trying to read the discs. This means that I cannot copy the discs or use the video editing program on my computer. I'd be curious if anyone else with this recorder can get the discs to play on any computer DVD Player?

Stay away from hte Cyberhome 1500 like the plague. I purchased a unit a month ago from Walmart and have exchanged it three times and never got a good unit.

The 1500 will run perfectly for a couple days and hten...KAPUT! The unit will lock up on blank R= DVD's.....as well as pre-recorded discs. The units would not eject and would go into a "stall mode". The only way to get the unit back on line was to unplug it and let it set overnight. I can attribute this to overheating. The DVD'd were extremely warm when they did eject. It is obvious, the failure of hte internal components is due to excessive heat build-up.

On my fourth and final trip to Walmart I took the refund and "payed up" for a Magnavox MDV630R. It has burned over 150 DVD's and has not produced a "coaster" yet. The unit runs much cooler, though the remote takes a bit of practice to learn. Also...any DVD R+RW I made on the Cyberhome cannot be erased by the Magnavox...unless I'm missing something.

In a candid conversation with the home electronics mamager, I was told every Cyberhome 1500 they sold was either exchanged or returned with basically the same problems I was confronted with.

Increased my rating after updating BIOS (to U0226200401X) and Servo firmware (to 128A). New Servo firmware made it compatible to record to Imation and Kypermedia DVD+R discs (was creating expensive coasters prior to this). Have now recorded approximately 400-500 hours of programs/movies mostly on Memorex DVD+RW 2.4X with excellent results.

Only criticism is that it takes over a minute to finalize a +R but that is minor.

Not sure of current price since I purchased at an after-Thanksgiving sale (1/2 price).

Well a follow-on to my March 31 revue...

Just had to take the first unit back to Walmart (April 10).
Turned it on and Drawer would not open. Power off, remove power, neither helped, shaking it, no joy either. Unit is warm even when off. So for second unit I've decided to try turning it off on the back so it doesn't run as hot and see if that helps.

Happy with the results, but now I'm worried about reliability.

I purchased one of these at Walmart like everyone else. I have had it for several weeks and think for the price it is great. I downloaded and updated the firmware after a week of use, so I avoided some of the problems previously reported. I also attempted to update what they call the "SERVO". It failed and as of yet, a full week later, no response to my email help request, so don't hold your breath for help.

The 2 hour setting is pretty good quality if your source is good. It accepts Verbatim DVD+RW in addition to the 3 free disks they give you. Disks play with my JVC and Daewoo players that normally play +Rs.

I use a PVR to record TV from my satellite. I use the Cyberhome to cut commercials and record those shows to DVD+RW. It automatically creates a menu system which is fine if you are using it as a VCR and plan to erase them later. The menu is crappy if you plan to keep the shows. I transfer them to my computer and use MyDVD to create a menu structure with readable titles and DVD quality navigation. Then I burn them on +R and recycle my RWs.

For a device that is only $250 I think it is a pretty good value. If you have problems however the email support appears non existent. The web site is weak other than updates.

Picture Quality at the 2 hour setting seems good considering I'm using it to go from tape as a quickie way to convert quanities of tapes using a Sima GoDVD between the VCR and the Cyberhome unit.

I've had no problems playing back in my Sony, Apex AD 5131 Plays fine but ff seems to go super fast. I've only used Memorx +RW 2.4X and TDK +R 4X, no problems. SO I am using it to capture the tapes to DVD, Ripping in my Liteon 16X and reauthoring for better menus, And edits. Also seems to fix Apex problem. In Short so far doing what I wanted and expected.

I gave it a 9 because I'm easy, Would have been a ten except the disks come out much warmer than from my Sony burner. Whole unit runs warm in fact.

Yesterday, I bought CyberHome CH-DVR 1500 from RadioShack for $249. I already read all comments from here before I decided to buy it. I took it home, upgrade all firmware then play with it. It lock up several time, but turn off/on the main power switch help slove the problem.
I set it to auto record before I went to bed. In the morning, when I try to turn it on, it lock up with the disk inside. This time, no matter how many time I try to turn off/on the main power switch, it didn't help. I then decided to flip it around while power on. At some angle while I flip it around, I heard the disk spinning. This help it to reset and read the disk again.
It seem this trick do the job every time it locked up, but I think it's not worth the hassle, so I returned it and bought the Panasonic DMR-E80H at CircuitCity which is on sale for $495.

* Things I like in CyberHome CH-DVR 1500
- Very cheap.
- Quite easy to use.
- Picture quality is very good.
- Use DVD+R/+RW format.

* Thing I hope they can improve
- Fix the lock up problem as soon as possible.

If it's not lock up this often I would give it 8 out of 10.
