Had our player for 5 months with no problems to report, except for our son pushed a DVD right inside it so that the tray would not open or close. Took the cover off, unclipped the DVD drive from the cables and gave it a good shake, out popped the DVD!
Updated the Firmware using a CDR sent by Compacks - (UK 0208 6106460) and NOT the website download, was told that it was best not download the update and that they would send me a CD in the post. Not noticed any picture or sound quality difference, but the Timer now works properly and the unit now shows the time when on standby. Dont have any region 1 DVD's to test the mulit region hack so cant comment on if it works or not.
Got it Hooked up to Sky Digital so can only watch what we are recording at the time, picture and sound dont seem as crisp when viewing Sky though the DVD tuner - which is weird, otherwise not a bad recorder for the money. Just ordered a Compacks DVD 800 player aswell!

Cheap Player - £120.
No problems except only 1 scart socket is a pain but s-video - rgb inputs. Cheap and reliable for the money. |

Notable pros:
----
Built in 5.1 decoder
Progressive output
3 sets of audio/video inputs
Built in TV tuner
Easy multi-region hack via firmware upgrade
----
Notable cons:
large footprint and very heavy
DVD +R/RW support only
No input via SCART
Inability to pause recording
Extremely tortuous TV channel setup procedure
Somewhat picky about media (unfortunately cheap Bulkpaq DVD+R media are out)
Extremely dodgy recording from external inputs - the recording automatically stops if there is the slightest "blip" in the input signal.
----
The inability to pause recording is an extremely annoying and frankly ridiculous omission in a dvd recorder. What were Compacks thinking? |

Have had this model for 5 months now, and its finally happened. Tried to finalise a DVD+R, when suddenly the disk spun faster and faster and faster, none of the remote buttons responed or the front panel buttons. In the end had to pull the plug. Put the plug back in and quickly openned the draw to get the disk out.
So now when you put any DVD, +R,+RW,-R, or CD or VCD, it attempts to read the disk, then it comes up saying NO DISK.
This is such a shame as it has been so good to use up to now.
Will attempt to return it to Woolworths as its still under Warranty.
So be cautious if this is what happens in such a short time, to what is otherwise a perfectly good recorder. |

Had this machine for nearly 3 months. Superbly reliable with DVD+R disks (unlike my previous Philips which has been away for repair for nearly 3 months). Picture and sound good, but hopeless remote control - either fails to detect keypress or detects it as 2 presses. At the price, who can complain. I would hapilly buy another - and may have to.
Disaster has struck! BE WARNED!!!. Do not flash the firmware with Bank30.rom off the official website. It has almost totally disabled my machine. Compacks has not replied to my email. If anyone knows how to restore the old firmware PLEASE HELP. |

Also only had this a day (Woolworths UK £129). To comment on the above, the TV tuning method is not very good. To get the channels in order (1 to 5), luckily 2 to 5 dropped in the correct order and with channel 1 BBC1 i used the fine tunning and just hold down the button on the remote for some time till it got to the correct channel.
Plays -R's OK but will only record to +R's/+RW's.
Plenty of inputs/outputs.
Recorded from video OK. |

Well only had this a day but so far it's working fine.
Failry bulky compared to some DVDsbut no internal fan whirring away which is good.
Long thin remote, but buttons laid out in an acceptable manner. Have recorded via timer & manually & all worked fine.
1 small niggle is that I can't find a way to change the order of the tv channels, ie 1,2,3,4.
On the plus side getting the files into the PC is easy, DVD Dycrypter, change .vop extension to .mpg & edit with tmpg. Voila.
And there's a firmware update to make the player region free, don't know what else it does, haven't run it yet.
All in all I'm happy with it.
So far so good... |
