The price was incredible, $59.95 Canadian at Factory Direct in Toronto, $6 more for 1 year warranty.

Pros:
Uses DVD +R/+RW which I use with my computer DVD burner too.
Recording quality is very good.
Video output is good quality.

Cons:
Lousy manual, took a long time to "discover" the various menus to setup the functions.
Remote is poor quality, very limited range, buttons are small, functions are hard to read, have to repeat pressing buttons to cause functions to work.
Display is too small to read unless you're very close.
Lack of support from Citizen Electronics.
Recorded DVDs' image is darker than the source video when played back on a computer.

*Apparently this make and model are the same/similar to other units, such as the Electrohome 801EDVR, which may have better support.

Good boat anchor. Tried numerous times for timer recordings and to have nothing recorded. Good if you want to convert Digital or HI-8 (VHS) to digital. Bad Remote, Bad manual and very unreliable. One plus lots of inputs. Other then that I just put the DVD recorder in the closet and got myself a new Lite-on LVW-5115GHC+. A much better machine and very reliable. Stay away from the citizen and
get real a real machine unless you like a POS.

If you can get past the non-user friendly remote and manual, the Citizen C801DVR works flawlessly. I have tried the Lite-on 5005 and Cyberhome 1600 and hated both of them. Oddly enough, this recorder even finalized discs made from the Cyberhome which the Cyberhome could not finalize and I thought were destroyed!

The picture quality is much better than the Cyberhome or Lite-on on longer recordings. Even the 6 hour mode is quite good. And, as stated, will close all DVD+Rs so they can be played. I even unplugged the unit in middle of recording and when I plugged it back in, I could still record and finalize the disc. There has not been a single DVD+R or DVD+RW that I tried that it didn't work with. Even my Memorex DVD+R DL discs playback fine (but will not record on them). The fact that it plays PAL discs and can easily be made region-free (see previous post) is a big bonus. PAL playback is better than my Philips DVP642.

The feet on the bottom are cheap, sharp plastic and the blue display is hard to read. On the other hand, the low contrast of the blue light is great for darker movie rooms.

For such a low price, I could not expect more. I can record and not worry about the disc not turning out. The majority of discs used were Sony Tys and Maxells, but I have tried others and they all worked fine. Until HD recorders are affordable, the C801DVR will do just fine.

Region hack (tested and confirmed with Citizen C801DVR):

Press Setup, then 8 1 0 5 to enter the factory menu. There's a field to enter region code.

This hack is from the Cyberhome 1600 ZU model (latest version), so the firmware is obviously very close.

I'd give it a 7/10 overall. It's functional, but the manual is really bad, and the user interface can be quite difficult. I can't find much information about it online, but I've been trying to put together a FAQ as I test it. You can find it here: http://www3.telus.net/IMSL/C801DVR.htm. Please let me know if you have more information to add to the FAQ.

Good feature set, and it works most of the time. Minor media problems: DVD+R DL discs don't play well, and DVD+RW sometimes fails to play after recording. The sketchy overview manual is written in broken English. The remote is poorly laid out. The menus are confusing and not well designed. One idiotic design defect: when the Zoom control is used during playback, e.g. to zoom a very wide aspect ratio film to better fit the screen, the zoom display stays on the screen instead of disappearing after a few seconds! Makes the Zoom useless as a normal viewing function. I sometimes wonder if the Chinese engineers that design these things have ever actually used one.

This player plays everything i have thrown at it..i am very impressed. I have another citizen dvd player and it plays everything except Divx. Citizen has to me appealled to the masses by making their players quite compatible. My original 5 disk panasonic (big brand names BEWARE)carousel was an absolute piece of @#$%! as it wouldnt play half the media i put in it and did not play any svcd's which i had - mixed forms of media. I bought this at SUPERSTORE during their boxing week sale. I highly recommend it for all families who have multiple computers burning all kinds of media be it premium or the cheap stuff...it all works! as for my slight warning about brand names you figure that out for yourself. sorry can't explain it all here!

Overall it has been a positive experience with this new C801DVR by Citizen. Although a total newbie to the DVR scene, I have been able to do a few trials/tests to see what it can do and how to do it.

My first and biggest complaint is the poor manaul and remote. The manual only contains the basics with no extra info for the technically challenged. The remote is not very user friendly and requires a slight downward tilt to register from a distance. Another irritation is the dim display on the unit itself. You must be 1 ft away or less to read the status (if you did not have the remote on hand and push the appropriate display button). Sometimes it is nice to be able to just look at the disply on the unit without having to push anything.

The quality is fine - even on the SLP (6hr) mode. I have mostly been using +RW disks so far...had one problem with the +R disk...and trying to do another. Most reviews have recommended burning your DVD+RW's onto +R's via your PC. I will likely do the same.

This appears to be a good value for the money ($95 CDN from Superstore). It is limited using only the "+" format, but a good entry level piece. The menus are somewhat awkward, but ok when you learn the format. So far a good buy...but I am a little skeptically...and hope to be pleasantly surprised with its purformance. It is a defitnite huge step up from the old-time VHS!

Are the firmware updates for this hardware? If so, I would like to know about it.

Works fine if you want to transfer your home videos on DVDs. I only tried with DVD+R and have no complains. If you stop the recording in the middle of the DVD and shut it down until the next day, it will continue from where you left. Plays avi. and all kinds of formats. Not a zone free unit. You can make recordings from a VCR or any other DVD. Has DV input capabilities and S-video in and out. It also has PAL system burning capabilities. I would say good bang for the buck: only $92.75 US including tax.
