Comments:
I have a Cyberhome 1500 and a Gateway Dvr (their first). Both are unreliable at finalizing DVDs. I stopped using the gateway 5 days after buying it. The big problem with the Cyberhome is that it can easily "loose synch" and stop recording, ESPECIALLY when working with older tapes (say, 2 years old--not very old) so you often don't know whether you will get a good complete copy, or a bunch of little titles because you had to skip the "problem" section of the tape (or a damaged section of tape) and continue recording.

I bought the Astar hoping that the technology has improved and I would have more success transfering old tapes to DVD. The good news... The DVR does not appear to lock up or stop recording on older tapes, it actually recorded a better picture of a section of damaged tape than the VCR displayed on the TV. The picture recorded is pretty good.

The PROBLEM...you cannot place chapter marks where you want them!!! You can AUTO CHAPTER (every 5 minutes) or you can forget it. OTHER DVD PLAYERS SEE ONLY THE 5 MINUTE POINTS, ANY OTHER MARKS DONE WHILE IN EDIT MODE CAN BE SEEN ONLY BY THE ASTAR DVR. I thought placing chapters where YOU wanted them was a very basic feature. This DVR doesn't offer it. So either you set up things in 5 minute segments or you have to hunt for begining points and spots you WOULD have marked. Thats work you shouldn't have to do in my book.

Astar's website support is a manual download and thats it. No information. No apparent plan to offer download upgrades (which I hoped would have resolved this problem). If I knew this ahead of time, I WOULD NOT HAVE BOUGHT THIS UNIT.

It seems to finalize reliably, camera flashes (in the recording) don't seem to affect it (the Cyberhome may stop recording). I believe I will get my old tapes to copy successfully, but I won't be able to chapter them the way I like. If chaptering is important to you, try a different DVR. Also, I record only in HQ 1 hour mode, all other modes produce horrible slow motion and action blur problems (on any DVR).
