When I insert a prerecorded DVD in my Aspire 8091, it displays a message that no disk is present, then the screen goes blank. Menu works, so not a video output issue. DVDs play on other players.
The company website (aspiredigital.com) no longer exists. Does anyone know how to fix the problem or get support? Did the company get acquired or go out of business? |

| Before I installed the firmware update, I was able to play on my other DVD players the DVD R's that I recorded & finalized on the AD8091. After installing the firmware update, I cannot finalize DVD R's and I am unable to play these on other DVD players. I tried to go to www.aspiredigital.com to see if there was a solution and the website no longer exists. Is the company no longer in business? I'm glad I did not pay for the machine because it is not reliable. But my dad wasted his money. I only have it because he got frustrated with it and gave it to me. Thanks Dad. |

This is what I have found out so far:
1) Aspire 8091 = Himage 4010 (cosmetic changes to case, identical rear and remote)
2) If you lose video because you have advertently pressed PSCAN, press Source, press Pscan , Press Enter.
You may have to this a few times until you have proper Source.
3) there definitely is the 1 Gig VOB problem outlined in other comments and the DVDShrink solution works , if you want to salvage what has been recorded.

Does anybody get a white fuz (snow storm) on the tv screen after loading the firm ware?
Is this normal? I liked the black screen showing Disk loading in the upper right corner that it had before loading the firmware upgrade. Also I have to push play to start thr disk now where as before the firmware it would start automaticly. |

I got this unit to archive some video programs. Worked fine for a few days, then the video-out stopped working. Seemed like a problem with the rca output. Thought I may have pressed PScan by mistake (my TV is not compatible with that), but that wasn't it.
I noticed the unit was a little warm. After I cooled it off with a fan, the video worked again. I thought I'd roll the dice and apply the firmware upgrade. That appeared to work out well, until I tried to resume recording (after pressing pause on the remote). Might be that the upgrade disabled the remote resume from pause function. I can only resume a recording I placed in pause by pressing the pause button on the AD8091 itself, even though I initiated the pause from the remote.
Anyone else have or notice this problem (resume recording from pause via remote)? |

| funky, works great when it works. records sometimes; locks up sometimes, even with firmware patch. first timer worked, recorded the show as programmed. second timer did not work, but now the unit turns itself on in the middle of the night -sometimes- to do what i don't know, even though all timers have been removed. like it's haunted. unit gets very warm when on. progressive scan looks great. |

| Has anyone had problems regarding taping different VHS tapes? The first few tapes i transferred to dvdr worked out fine, then the aspire machine decided to NOT record about half of the vhs tapes that I put in the toshiba vcr, and now it records none of the tapes - just gets the little circle with the line through it. is there an adjustment to the aspire set-up you need to play around with to have it accept all vhs tapes for recording? It's not a macro proble--it's well beyond that. it won't ev4en let me burn taped tapes! |

I've tried callilng, I've tried email. No response, not sure these guys really exist. Have the same 29 minute barrier.
Did find a work-around. Used DVD-Decrypter to copy the disc to hard drive of computer. Then NeroVision will import the *.VOB files and join all the 2 minute cells. You can then edit transfer in NeroVision. I burn to a folber on the hard drive and then use Nero Recode to burn to disc.
It takes a long time for Nerovision to transcode these files. By comparison recording made on the Lite-on transcode in 1/5 the time!
The results with Nerovision are a Mpeg-2 file with AC-3 audio. You can also export a Mpeg-2 file from Nerovision that is at least "standard".
I would hope that they are working on another firmware upgrade for the Aspire since it looks like it could do a nice job. It's conversion/compression looks good.

I too have the 29 minute problem - I can write 1 hour+ titles on a DVD+RW on the Aspire 8091 and play them back OK. Move the disk to another player, and the title stops playing at about 29 minutes. Formatting the disk first made no difference. The F/W upgrade did not fix it either. (The update instructions are not clear - I sent e-mail to AD tech support to ask if did it right a week ago - no reply yet
Another problem is that I can't re-use the time between titles on a reusable DVD+RW (if you delete one title between others). Even though "time remaining" hints that you can, the DISK full occurs based on the time at he end of the disk only. The space can only be reclaimed if you delete a title at the end of the disk. You have to delete or format THE WHOLE RW media to get the space back if the lasts title fills the disk
The manual is very badly written will missing information and lots of errors For example, it tells you can add a Chapter index manually – but is does not tell you how to do it. Also the advertising says it supports “Commercial skip” – but there is no instructions for this either.
But It’s low cost and it (mostly) works ok - I guess you get what you pay for.
It good to record TV shows and play them back later - back but don’t use it to archive you home videos from a VCR - if they are moiré that 29 min long you can play them back on any other player

I have had a problem with setting repeat recordings. It loses the settings after 1 recording and does not record again until you correct it.
The DVD disks it creates on DVD+RW are not standard. Where DVD should have 1 VOB file for each 1 GB of video, if you look at the disk with a computer, you see only one file of 1 GB but 4 GB of disk space used. Ether the other files are not visible or the one file is actually much bigger but does not show in windows explorer. You cannot successfully copy the disk with a coputer, because the one file only has one third of the video. I have found that DVD-shrink can successfully copy the disk and successfully creates three or four 1 GB VOB files. Other programs, including smartripper cannot process the disk.
When trying to edit the movie with Nerovision Express you find that the video is actually split into 2 minute pieces within the VOB file, making it rather difficult to edit.
When using a new DVD-RW disk it is advisable to use the "format disk" option. You can record without formatting first but the machine freezes with the new disk mounted while you are trying to set up recordings. Do not use "Erase disk" this causes the same freezing problems. |

| I'm also seeing the 29 minute mark problem. I thought the recorder was great until I tried to record something longer than 29 min, and didn't realize the problem until after trying to watch it on another player. It plays on the aspire, but not on anything else. 6+ discs wasted, and the firmware upgrade does nothing to fix. |

| You do not need to finalize a DVD+RW they will play fine in any other player that will accept them. i have copied and played on my LG 4040 with no trouble. It is the DVD+R that must be finalized to move to other players. |

dennis,
i've never had that issue before.. i myself have had no problems with my unit (except when recording a 97min movie on sp mode the dvd recorder has twice turned itself off for no apparent reason).... however, my friend can not insert manual chapters onto an +rw disc that effectively play in other dvd players.. the chapters will work fine in the player, but not in anything else.. i do believe fuji was not a recommended disc medium in the manual? maybe that has something to do with it... did tech support having any suggestions if it has happened in 2 units???

| I bought this unit and it appears to record and playback on the recorder fine, but when I try to play it on my Magnasonic DVD player, Pioneer DVD-ROM or my brand new NEC ND-2510a dvd writer the DVD+RW maxell or DVD+R Fujifilm I burned ALL stop at the 29 minute mark (note the Magnasonic reports 1 of 4 titles when onlt 1 was recorded). Has anyone heard of this problem? I called TECH SUPPORT and they never heard of this before, so they told me to upgrade the firmware. I did and same problem again. I returned the recorder and got another and the SAME problem again before and after firmware upgrade. Any one else ever have this happen and if so is there a fix??? Thanks! |

| To insert chapters, use the scroll buttons on the remote (left, right, down) to put chapters in. I returned it weeks ago to Wal-Mart, so memory is fading concerning it, but I do remember that the scrolls did the chapter function. |

my final question? any ideas of how to change that background image on the mainscreen?? HORRIBLE!!!!!

Here's another tricky thing Aspire appears to be doing: Releasing your e-mail. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but all of a sudden I am getting spammed with e-mails with an @aspiredigital.com attached. I thought the first one was legit, but when I opened the attachment, my virus checker blocked it and showed it as : Virus "W32.Netsky.D@mm" found.
I got two more today. I don't know if these sons-of-glitches are giving out addresses...it just seems suspicious... |

| I am having the same problems with time remaining. And I totally agree that the manual is the worst ever. This thing is going back. One of the reasons - RW discs recorded by AD 8091 will not play in other players. AD suggests to make them compatible but never tells you how. Bad, Bad, and Bad! |

| Me again...been in contact with Aspire as to the odd time remaining. Pretty sure the machine has a problem. Bought a Sanyo this week and it has an almost identical menuing system. On the Sanyo, the time remaining is shown correctly and you can toggle real-time through the modes and see exactly how much time is left. Don't know if I want to try another 8091. Waiting to see if anyone will post anything on their experiences with it. |

| Me again. Guess I must be the only one who bought one of these things. More comments on the awful manual that came with it. Finally figured out how to insert and hide chapters. The manual says you can add and hide chapters, and says you can find it in the "Editing your recordings", but when you turn to it, it has absolutely nothing on how to do it. There is nothing labeled on the remote, either. Found out how to do it just by playing with different buttons on the remote. The ones that do do it are not labeled in any way as to this function. At least now that I know how to do it, it's one less reason to return it. Also, it would be nice if the OSD (on screen display) description would remain on and not go off after a couple seconds. The time for the OSD stays on, but you don't know what mode it's in unless your press the button again. I think these guys need to fire the tech writers they have or at least get them to use the equipment before putting out some semi-intelligent manuals. I'm sure I'll have a few more comments as I play with this thing more. By the way, the good thing about this machine is the recordings do come out nice and clear, and the timer appears to work as advertised. There appears to be no "compatibility mode" to be able to set. Perhaps it hidden away on some yet to be found screen. Lol... |
