| It appears these have a power supply problem. Mine died and won't turn on any more. When it worked, it had good quality recordings. However, it would freeze up on occasion and I would have to unplug it and plug it back in, in order for it to power down and up. Sort of like shutting down a Windows Me PC! Anyway, I'm in the market again, but I won't buy an APEX, 6 months is too short of time at any price. I read the reviews here on other APEX DVD players and knew they had reliability problems, but I took a chance given the price and I lost. |

169 dollars and tax from Sears.
Pros: After the firmware upgrading to "d" this seems to be a highly capable recorder/player. I wish you could fine tune the capture bitrates, but not many players do that. Works with verbatim and tdk dvd+rw. I have a Sony dru500ax to do all the menus, etc with. There wasn't even any need to do the "make compatible" function to xfer this to pc.
Cons: I'm not sure, but I think the chaptering sucks. I noticed a bunch of skipping on one disc I made, I went back and redid the disc choosing no auto chapters, and no problems this time.
If I had bought this as anything but open box, where it had a 6 month or so warranty, I'd keep it, but being as prices are dropping and I only have a 30 day warranty/evaluation period, I'm not so sure I'll keep it. Spending 30-35 bucks more could buy me some peace of mind and a few other features (dv input, more bitrate settings) |

so far i have been pleased with the recorder. It plays my DVD-R's fine, it also plays the VCD's that i make.
however, the DVD+RW's that i have burned with my PC's burner read in the player as blank. when i push record it then tells me that the disk is full. after i erase the DVD+RW the the recorder i can then record on it.
if i burn a DVD+RW with the recorder then try to copy it to the PC's harddrive i run into some trouble. I did notice that the DVD's burned with this recorder have a folder called VIDEO_RM with 3 files inside: VIDEO_RM.BUP, .IFO, and .DAT.
the burning format is not ISO9660...
the brands of media that i use to burn are:
Memorex for all the DVD's and some VCD's.
Sony DVD+RW worked fine.
email me if you have questions.
its UDF/ISO9660 (mode 1) |

Well.... I don't know about this player yet. It works OK untill now, but then I only tried it for a 5 hours ;o).
The one thing that really sucks about this player is the "Channel Search" funktion. Seems like when the auto search function is done, you can't move the channels, and are stuck with the way they are.
I would like to be able to move them.
I didn't even think this could be an issue when I bought that darn thing ;o) - I have never before seen recorders where this wasen't dueable. |

| my APEX lasted about 3 months then nothing. Couldn't even contact support, phone always busy. Decided to open the unit up and found that a chip on the power suply had blown. Couldn't find the part to replace since the whole line has been out less than a year. I can only say one good thing about this unit, when it was working it made very good recordings. After openning this unit I noticed that it is very cheaply built. Customer support is very bad. I even tried calling to see if they would sell me a power board, always busy. I have also planed to replace the fan with a better one to help cool the unit. This could be an assume unit if APEX gets it together. |

I have purchased Three (3) Apex DRX-9000 since 10/1/03.
All have since been returned. They only last 3 to 4 weeks before they die ( no power) all of a sudden. It was a FANTASTIC product when it worked and Sears replaced the first two with no problem. I'll return the third one tomorrow and then wait and see what comes out next. Unless someone else can suggest another make or model around the same price. Too Bad , I really liked this product. |

Bought mine through ebay! for under $250. So far, I'm very pleased. I've copied shows from TiVo, directly from my satellite receiver, but couldn't copy from DVD (although, I only tried The Hulk). Copied discs play perfectly in my other players and the sound and picture are better than I expected. I recorded The Blues series that aired on PBS from TiVo, and put 4 hrs per disc with excellent quality.
I was going to record the entire season of 24, but sadly TiVo deleted the first two episodes to make room for other junk.
I'm totally satisfied so far and look forward to copying as many DVD's as I can buy! I just need to figure out how to get around the macrovision protection on prerecorded DVD's. |

I love the quality of recordings made by this unit. I also love the way the Compatability feature makes even DVD+RW discs play in almost all of my household DVD players. (The only one that won't is my oldest, a Panasonic A10.) Unfortunately, today I am going to have to take it back to Walmart and exchange it. It turns out that every recording I have made on this unit is unusable. During playback on any DVD playing (including the Apex DRX-9000 itself) the recordings skip every time they hit a chapter point. I am only disappointed because I have made so many recordings. I didn't realize the flaw right away because I would only view the first few seconds of a recording in another DVD player to see if it had recorded properly. Once I actually sat down to watch a show I had recorded, I realized that as soon as it hit the 5 minute mark -- SKIP -- it would jump ahead. It only happens during playback. During editing, the entire recording will play normally, except for the occassional dropout of sound when it hits a point where a chapter has been added or deleted. Maybe that should have been a hint. Anyway, hopefully the next one will work right.
I have also noticed that at times, during playback and editing, some of the basic functions will not work. Sometimes it won't let me fast-forward, rewind, skip chapters, hide chapters, etc. When I press the button, it shows the "Invalid" error message.
I'll give this unit one more chance and if it doesn't work right, I'm going to wait for the next generation of recorders to come out. |

Build quality on these units is terrible. No Time Base Corrector means that you are at the mercy of your vcr when transferring to DVD that way. Save your money and buy one of the newer standalones like the Pioneer DVR-310-S (available now) or the hard drive equipt 510 (October) or the new Panasonic standalones. If you MUST have +R/+RW my recommend is to look elsewhere...

| I got the 9000 from Walmart a month ago, it was making a lot of noise with the fan, was working very good copy anything from another Apex using svideo, excellent video quality. Transfer video files into my PC OK even editing with Studio 8. The sad part DIE 2 weeks later... I got a replacement exchange with NO problem. This time was NOT making that loud noise with the fan, everything was working great until it DIES after 2 weeks. I got my money back because they did not have any 9000 in stock. At this moment I am waiting to see if any one has similar reports. |

| Has only 2 input slots but they both have s-video connections. Also has HD connection for the out. Easy interface which is user friendly. It plays MP3's according to box but I dont have any so I dont know about what it displays as far as tags. The editing options are cool. I really enjoy the recorder. |

Well here i am back again! Seems my 2nd Apex 9000 Unit had to go back! The fan went real loud and started making loud noises. It sounded like lawnmower, then my unit started to screw up and make coasters! had to return for a full refund. Think i am going to wait and see what comes out.
Good Luck to you guys.

Got mine and am satisfied. I was torn between this and the Sony RDR-GX7, but the Sony wouldn't do +R, and it was more than twice the price.
Positives: price, picture quality (4hr mode is better than VHS) simple menus, small and light.
Cons: manual only has half the info, only 2x FF with recorder disks, can only erase the last recorded segment or the whole disk, no clock backup, cheezy remote.
Make sure you select Auto Chapter to "ON" in setup. This puts a chapter in every 5 minutes. It was defaulted to off. Recorded a 2 hour show. Watched 30 minutes and shut down for dinner. When I came back it started from the beginning and the only way to get to where I left off was with 2x FF. With Auto Chapter you can zip through the chapters to get there.

Played a VCD on it today and it worked perfect. Did the firmware update to fix the VCR to Recorder issue.
Dont know if I just have compatible equipment or just lucky but I have recorded from VCR to Recorder(no macro problems), DVD Player to recorder, and even copied a rented dvd(newly released movie)from the player to the recorder(to see if there were issues with copy protection)and had no problems. All in All I think this Apex is a good machine for the price. |

It should be noted that this player does *not* support JPEG, WMA, or have Apex's AFF function. Amazon, Wal*Mart, and Sears have all been misinformed and only the Apex website correctly lists the specs for this player.
Also, the player "out of the box" will have issues recording VHS tapes through the RCA Inputs. If you visit the Apex website, they have a firmware upgrade that will correct this issue |

Just a preliminary assessment...this recorder seems great for the money. I picked it at Wally World and immediately gave it a torture test: a grainy, somewhat unstable VHS copy of the 1997 Bucs/49ers game. It captured it much better than I would have anticipated, and using the two hour mode improved the quality from the source.
I cannot fully comment on this machine yet, but it is intuitive to use, and the manual does a capable job of filling in the details. I was thinking of going the pc route for conversion of old analog tapes, but this is a much less frustrating method of getting a digital copy. I figure I can then rip the dvds and do my editing with some real software and reburn using my pc dvd drive. The recorder's use of +RW discs ensures no coasters also. |

Yahoooooooo. I was finaly able to capture my DSS satalite video to a perfect image file!!!! I have a Sony DRU-510a for my PC, but video capture has always been a nightmare.... Until now.
I just picked this up yesturday at Wal*Mart for $378. Video quality is GREAT at 1hr, 2hr, and 4hr. I didn't try 8hr yet.
I used Maxell 2.4x +RW media. Great because I was able to put the +RW in my PC after the copy and edit the DVD with standard tools.
PROS: GREAT Qaulity Capture (video and Audio), GREAT PRICE, Timer is realy nice.
CONS: Manual is so so, User Interface is going to be a project to learn and teach my wife.
I'll repost more info after I play more if there is any interest.. |
