Update to my previous post.
Exchanged my XMS 750 for a XMS 1050. The 750 would not play SVCD without slow downs and sound drops as stated before.
Tried another 750 at the shop and it did the same thing, so SVCD problems seem to be with all of them? Tried the same SVCD on the new XMS-1050 and it play perfectly. Will post info on the 1050 once I try a few more discs (I only picked it up yesterday!) I tried the same SVCD disc on the Omni3200P and it played ok (couldn't swap mine for the Omni ;(
SVCD tested was TDK 80 min Gold (CMC Magnetics) encoded on TMPEG, 2 pass vbr 2400ave 2520max 1200min. Sound 224 bit 44.1kHz burnt on Nero with LiteOn 4xSpeed |

After 2 years
CDR all media tried works well (Mitsui,Mitsubishi/Verbatim, Opal,Ritek)
DVD-R worked in about 50% of cases. Best compatability Ritek burnt@1x about 90% OK. Authoring was on a G4 Mac with Final cut Pro & DVD Pro and internal Pioneer writer. Media recorded @4x about 40% OK.
VCD burnt withToast 100% OK. Terapin Standalone VCD recorder about 90% OK probably a problem with recorder.
MP3 recordered on Toast iso9660 and Nero 100% OK at constant bit rate. VBR questionable.
Interference with TV when power left on. This does go away after about 1/2Hr. Appears to have 2 standby modes.
No problems with multi region disks or macrovision |

| Bought this in March 2001 from Strathfield for the purpose of DVD playback only, after setting it to multi-region using the 33080 code it plays all my region 1,2 and 4 DVDs with absolutely no problems. Is this a dual laser unit ? Because its brilliant on scratched DVDs that would stop my sister's Magnavox 100 dead. No problems with Superbit DVDs either. Only thing I've found is that is does have Macrovsion enabled (the brightness level will fade in and out). Being a stupid newbie at the time I didnt know about S-Video so I can only connect to the overpriced bare basic Sony Trinitron I bought to go with it through the A/V inputs. |

I bought the XMS 750 in December 2001 for A$330.
It plays VCD, and commercial DVD well. After 3 weeks, after playing a DVD movie (about 2 hours) the picture becomes jerky and the audio the same. This happens to 5 DVD's that have been played. I brought it back to Stratfield, Cannngton, for warranty check. It came back after 3 months and it wasn't my original machine. Then I was given a new 750 and that is the infamous model. Itdoes the same thing like my previous machine and not Macrovision free! Only if I knew, I would have kept my old model machine.
It plays SVCD with CBR only and the picture still is jerky every now and then. Picture just breaks up with CBR.
The remote sucks. I have to point it to the floor at 45 dgrees for the player to work.
There seems to be quite a few good reports from some lucky owner of the 750. All I can think is that the 750 is basically a very good machine. Unfortunately probably due to poor Quality Control, there are lots of lemons out there and I got one of them.
I bought an Omni SD3300 for A$199 form Stratfield December 2002 and it is heaps better. |

I bought my XMS 750 at Strathfield Dandenong [Melbourne suburb]
Because it has a built in 5.1 decoder I could also buy a cheap 5.1 speaker/amp/sub set up to go with it for the price of a similar DVD alone.
It plays mp3's well above 128kb [and gives you a menu with the first few letters of each track!] with no problem for me.
Someone above said otherwise. 128kb does not usually have a sound quality that I'm happy with.
I'm very happy with this player it plays my vcd photo albums with music with no problem as well as VCD's of online Quake III arena games.
One small problem, if you play around with the stop and puse butons too much it sometimes locks and you need to turn it off then on again on the actual unit to fix the problem.

Just bought one from Strathfield in Sydney, preferred the look to the 950, main reason for buying was the decoded 5.1 Outputs. Haven't really had a chance to give it a full test, plays commercial DVDs beautifully.
Have found one problem though, it will not play DVD+R burnt on a Philips DVD deck. We've checked this particular DVD in two Hiteker A600s and A sony unit. Plays fine in both.
Plan to burn some VCD and SVCDs in the next few days, I'll be surprised if I have any problems with these though. |

This is an update to my previous post explaining problems playing svcd's.
Tested my svcd at the store on another xms-750 and same problem. Then tried it on an omni3200P and an xms-1050 and it worked no problem on both. Wanted to get the omni3200p but had to swap to the xms-1050 (my 750 was still under warranty and could only swap for another xms product). Will update on the xms-1050 after some testing.
SVCD tested was on TDK 80min Gold(by CMC Magnetics - long term strategy dye PhthaloCyanine) encoded on TMPEG vbr - 2520max, 2400ave, 1200min. 44.1kHz sound @224, burnt using nero on LiteOn 32123s at 4x |

Purchased Jan 02 from Strathfield in Oz. No problem playing DVD's as mentioned before remote is very slow to repond.
Started to burn SVCD's for it and had no end of trouble playing them. Would look great but the video would slow down, sound drop out and macro blocks appeared occasionally (enough to be unwatchable). Thought there was a problem with my encoding.
Tried the VCD header trick on the all my SVCD files (CVD, xSVCD 48kHz sound at cbr and vbr on CD-R and CD-RW) and presto instant success (it wasn't my encoding :) Results very impressive. Would have given it a higher score if it would play SVCDs straight out of the box. All I have to do now is work out how to keep my chapter breaks using the header trick!
I will be keping my eyes open for a better player, one that doesn't need the header trick to play SVCD's. |

bought in june 2001.
works with all brands of cdr and cdrw tested.
could even play home made vcd on overburnt 90mn cds.
Could play about 40 dvds tested, including pal and ntsc, regions 1,2,4.
never failed my mp3s either.
A bit slow to react to commands, that's the only downside.
Great player! |

Excellent unit, plays anything you can stick in it.
Only problems iv had is the unit will sometimes lock up in standby mode but if you switch off then on unit works ok. have had "No disc" error message displayed when playing VCD's but if you use a good lens cleaner this fixes the problem.

Some tips on this player.
Please be aware that this player does not like VBR SVCD or VBR MP3. Because standard SVCD is VBR it may skips sound every 5-6 seconds.
MP3: Before you burn your MP3 discs make sure that you convert all files to 128Kbit CBR. Otherwise it skips and does not play propertly.
Turn it off after use (Fully off) otherwise interf. with TV.
MPEG1- XVCD only change the bitrate not the resolution.
(it must be 352x288, any bitrate(CBR))

| I currently work for a company that sells this product in Asutralia and have found out of all the players we sell. THIS IS THE BEST. For value for money nothing compares to this player. Others claim to do mp3, vcd and cdr etc. But none as good as this one. Xms did stuff up with taking out the macrovision but there is always a way round it. For the price and things you can do on it, why spend double the money for just a dvd player. Out of the ones I have sold, hardly any have been returned with problems. We would have more returns on other players than the xms. Out of all problems encountered with this player they are only minor, compared to other brands. The biggest problem seen is lip sinc problems, but it is seen on the later models and if returned within a month of purchase, it can be swapped over there and then. Other than that buy one you wont be disappointed. This is the only machine I can sell and have very happy customers. |

I just want to add that the XMS750 (old and new models) have onboard dolby digital 5.1 decoding, so if you own a digital ready amplifier (analogue amp with 6 RCA audio inputs on the back - 2 front, 2 back, 1 centre and 1 subwoofer) you can still get DD5.1 sound through this model. This is pretty rare in dvd players from what I've seen, and worth considering if you have a digital ready amp.
Other than that, I've had my machine for over a year now, still goes good, has played all but 1 disc (bad quality pirate) so far, and works fine with MP3 and CD audio on TDK, BASF/EMTEC, JVC, Verbatim & SONY CDRs and JVC & BASF CDRWs (I haven't tried any other brands).
I've had no macrovision issues that others have mentioned such as being unable to tape onto video (including macrovision DVDs); the black rolling screen is caused by NTSC discs. Most VCRs (including mine) sold in Australia have NTSC playback but not recording; the black rolling screen happened to me when I tried to tape an NTSC disc. But keep in mind, my XMS750 is the old model, maybe macrovision is active on the new ones. RF interference does occur (only on ABC though; CH7,9 & 10 are fine) so I turn the machine off. If I'm watching TV I don't need my DVD turned on anyway, so who cares? No lip sync probs for me, but my dad's got the new XMS750 model and he's had sync issues once so far. Incidently, I own the disc (Bridget Jones's Diary) which his machine had issues with and it works fine on my machine.
Hope this helps someone. |

I bought my XMs 750 just over a year ago, last cew weeks I have been having a few problems. Some VCD's it would not recognise at all, some it would sometimes play them and others worked perfectly. The same cd's used to play perfectly. Most VCD's that would work would take quite a while to be recognised. SVCD's would not play smoothly.
No problems at all with DVD's.
Everything used to work ok, I guess I am just unlucky that mine developed a fault.

I initially bought an xms250. I upgraded to a 750 and have been very satisfied with the performance. I have it connected to my set via svhs cable and the image is very clear. Some dvd's on occasion hesitiate during chapter changes but it's so rare that when it happens one notices it. I've not experience lip sync problems.
Region 1 (ntsc) plays flawlessly. I've had no joy with VCD though. The disc spins makes a noise and then shuts down my xms. It could be the vcd's Ive got from a
friend but I will try some other sources.
MP# playback is good...sounds better through my system than just through the computer.
Macrovision seems not to be a problem...but then again why would you want to copy a dvd to an inferior quality vhs? But each to his own.
All in all compared to some friends who have bought "known brands" for high dollars my xms does very well for a fraction of the cost with more features. |

Had this machine for a week now (got it from Brisbane Car Sound) and i dont seem to hav problems that most people are complaining about like interference with TV signal or jumpings etc....the sound quality is awesome...pretty close to a theatre - and the freezing bit people are talking about...every DVD player pauses a while changing layers...except this one takes a tad longer...DVD to VHS is good provided your VCR can handle EP (extended play - longer than Lp - long play) - i;ve got a PANASONIC VCR (NVSD-420A) - people having trouble with black and white rolling images, press the SYSTEM button 2-3times 'til you get a picture otherwise, change it manually in GENERAL SETTINGS>TV TYPE>PAL (Default MULTI).
The only problem i had with this thing is it cant play MP3's burnt on a Kodak CDR....it detected it as MP3 disk but made some cracking sounds and wont play...otherwise a nice player for the price! |

nice player omly problem i have had is that my svcds jump when playing them but trying to work around it probably just something i am doing because other people seem to be able to do it fine.
the flickering of black and white up the screen is easy to fix just press the system button until it works then no probs.
