Comments:
I will be writing about the Koss KD305-2.
Apparently, there are more KD305s out there. If yours does not contain "-2", there's hope.
As an aside, the box claims this player can read DVD/VCD/CD/MP3.

I've written this review because the player I got turned out to be pure crap, and nobody should ever buy a Koss KD305-2!
I can no longer use this player because I broke it in rage, and then smashed it to bits.

The bad points:
- It played properly about half of the discs I put in. And most of the time I only put in DVD-compliant discs. I used quality media, too, and it even had problems with Verbatim discs. Such problems can be: giving up loading the disc, weird noises while trying to load the disc, pixelation and sometimes also freezing during playback, random pixelation in movies and menus, navigation to another title instead of the requested menu after long wait...
- The 'Next' button does not work properly. Even if the disc works fine throughout, 'Next' tends to take you to the next DVD title rather than to the previous menu. Some might like this, I suppose, I hate it.
- The remote control (which requires smaller batteries, not the regular AA remote-control, standard ones) is not very responsive. But the buttons on the unit are behaving the same, too! The 'Eject' button is the worst; it will actually open the tray about once in every four tries, unless you press it with all your might and keep it pressed for a good while.
- With some discs, that really refuse to play, the machine will freeze altogether and one has to turn Power off to be able to take the disc out. But it should be noted that the player will freeze again, unless one presses 'Eject' before the recently-powered-on player actually tries to load and again reaches the problem that makes it freeze - which makes the 'Eject' responsiveness problem even greater.
- Over time, these problems get worse and worse. I barely reached two years of use and couldn't take it anymore.
- Another interesting problem is that, when recording material from a VHS tape to a DVD-R/DVD+R, the sound becomes inaudible during playback of said DVD-R/DVD+R. What I mean is, don't back up your VHS tapes onto DVD using a DVD recorder and then try to play them back on the Koss KD305-2! There will be no sound.
- There are tons of other problems, such as: no DivX playback, no Dual-Layer playback, no folder navigation of non-DVD-compliant discs and no playback of MPG, VOB individual files; but, above, I only emphasized the problems that caused me to eventually trample the player under my feet.

The good points:
- It's silver, so dust is less visible on its surface.

This player seems to have lots of problems with newer discs, 16X in particular. Many times I have had to burn at half the speed, or even less, in order to try to maximize compatibility with the Koss player. Over time, I think I have thrown away discs worth more than twice the price of the player.

In conclusion, don't get this, even if it's offered to you for free! It will still cost you your nerves!

I have the KD305a, which is the progressive version of this player. It lets you navigate a disc's folder structure. It shows the first 16 or so characters of the folder and file names as you're browsing the tree. For the currently playing song it shows the first 30 or so characters of the filename and the last 30 or so characters of the path. It has whole-disc random play mode. It only recognizes the first 999 songs on a disc.

There is no single-folder random play mode, and scrolling through the songs and folders is a little bit slow and clunky.

The player most definitely supports Joliet long filenames.

I was concerned after reading the mixed reviews of this player. I was needing a DVD player for my kids' room that would play DVD+R (have not tried DVD-R yet). The 305a that I got at Sears for $34 has a black face remote but doesn't have the MP3/WMA indication only MP3 with the CDR/CDRW indicator. I have tried only one that I authored using "TMPGEnc DVD Author" but it worked great. I was using 8X Verbatim DVD+R media.

I was just about to post that ben. ;)

The unit I received in exchange for my "crap" version kd305a, plays everything, has a different menu, and has a black remote.

Im now happy with my purchase of the TRUE kd305a, if you get the crap version, your in for a surprise, it wont play jack. Take it back and just tell them vcd's wont play.

Woo.

I have solved this new problem of getting units from Sears that won't play SVCD or PAL DVD, or any DVD that doesn't have a region code. When you get one:

-make sure that the remote has a black face with glow in the dark buttons
-the symbol on the front of the player says MP3/WMA--not just MP3 with CD-R/W in small letters underneath..

I don't think there's a connection between the manufacture date and functionality, I have one that was made in Nov.2003, it works...I got one made in Feb.2004...it doesn't...I have 2 units made in Jan.2004 that work, and the store had one with Sept.2003 that didn't. I suspect the good ones are actually units built for the Euro market and had their region code set to 1. In the bad units, the OSD is completely different, and even though the hack code works, you can't set the region to zero, it only gives you the option of 1-9.

So...check the MP3 symbol and remote and you should be fine. If you have the right model, it will play everything you throw at it

Ive tested a Dvd+R and svcd so far, just got it at sears 20 mins ago for 35. So far audio sounds weird unlike the norcent I just returned to walmart, hoping this koss would be better.

And worst of all, svcd WILL NOT PLAY. I get invalid disc every time. It seems Im the only person posting here getting this problem.

What should I do?

I have the KD305a (the progressive scan version)

This player is great for playing mp3's on DVDs. Make sure you burn the mp3-DVD in ISO 9660 format, 30 char. max. filenames, NOT JOLIET. Unfortunately, you can only see about 20 characters of the file name, and only about 10 while navigating though the menus. If you burn the dvd with UDF format, you can see just 8 characters. Joliet extension dvds are not recognized by the player. Joliet mp3 CDs (not DVDs) are recognized and you can see more of the filename.

I authored a miniDVD / cDVD (DVD on a CD) and my computer recognizes it, but this player does not. SVCD and VCD play OK.

A good thing: you can watch jpgs while listening mp3 on recorded on the same disc.

I have spent probably 12 months looking for a DVD player that will play DVD-MP3. I have finally found one. It only display about 20 charactors of the file name, but it will support shuffle amoung all the folders. So, I just created a folder for each artist, and that solves that issue. Sounds great, nice menu. Two things I don't like are no way to disable autoplay and the remote buttons are too small. Two things I can live with though.

I haven't tested any video features since I have another player for DVD Video.

Picture quality was great, where my other dvd player would skip and get pixlated this one played it smooth.

Complaints:
Disk drawer opens very slowly, i sometimes find myself pressing the remote open button twice because i figured it missed, only to have the drawer open about 6 seconds later and then close again.

Sometimes locks up and the unit has to be powered on and off a few times before it will respond to remote commands.

My biggest complaint is that the movie search doesnt work. I have two of these players, and neither one will let me type in an index time to go to. For example, say i stopped watching the movie at 23:00 minutes into it and hit stop. The unit will not respond to any of my commands to get it to jump to that time or any other time index.

I picked up the 305a version tonight at Sears for $34.99. First impressions are really good - it must easily be the best player at this price. PQ is really nice. The region-free hack is easier to do on this version also. Simply hit MENU followed by 1-6-7-1-9 , and there is no hidden configuration menu, just a simple box asking for which region you want. Hit 0 and it becomes region-free, and it stays on NTSC - no remembering the sequence to get back to the display setting - that's it! This version is also progressive scan which is a nice bonus. So far I've only tried retail discs and TDK 4x DVD+R discs encoded/burned with Nero 6.3.0.3, and both played flawlessly. Hopefully the unit holds up for awhile, but even if it doesn't, it was only 35 bones and I'll pick up another.

I previously did a review you'll see posted here about this Koss player. I somewhat put it through the paces previously, since then, there's now a different story to share. I got one of these models, thought I liked it, and ordered another several days later. To make a long story short, I found that with different dvd media (+,-, and +rw) that at times both players would say "Disc not found" upon insertion. I'd try to open and close the tray several times, and it didn't help. I took 10 different DVD disk brands that I had in a stack, that both Koss' couldn't read, and they ALL read fine in my overheating Norcent 300 and overheating Apex 1100W. Took both Koss' back to Sears this weekend for a refund. I've ordered (2) progressive scan Apex 2600's off Amazon.com today for $40 each. Will let you know how they do under that model. Bottomline, be careful with the Koss, it can seem to work for a couple of weeks, then discs start saying on your TV screen "Disc not found".

I bought the Koss KD305a, it seems the KD305 (no a) is exactly the same but without progressive scan. This unit is amazing and at $40 it's and incredible bargain. It played every DVD-+R/RW I tried and it played all my VCDs and SVCDs without a problem.

The picture and audio quality was much better than the Norcent player I ended up returning. The Koss player also seemed to respond much faster and there was no lag compared to some other cheap players I've used. The unit doesn't have a front panel display, but for $40 what do you expect? This is a great player no matter what the price, and costing $40 just makes it THAT much nicer.

I've tried this player with about 6 different types of recordable DVD's. Plays everything! Doesn't seem to have the quirky eject problems others have talked about. However, I have noticed something quirky about this player. When I put burned dvd movies in the tray, and close the tray, it always starts auto-playing anywhere from 5 minutes to 1 hour, into the movie. However, if I put in the original dvd, it always plays from the beginning. I've experimented with this a bit: different media brands, different decrypters, different software (CloneDVD & DVDXCopy Xpress), and different movies, doen't make a difference! I know it's specific to this player too, because I take take the same burned DVD's, and they start from the beginning of the movie, on my Apex and my Norcent! There is however an easy fix. You can simply use the chapter rewind button on the remote to "zero out" to the beginning of the movie.

In defense of this little player let me say this. Unbelievable picture quality. Better than my Apex 1100W and my Norcent! Noticably better! Also, whereas my Apex and Norcent would get very hot, this player stays cool. I was having problems when my Apex and Norcent get hot (about 1 hr into playing a movie), with dvd's having little pause glitches. Meaning, a movie would hiccup and pause for a split second, and start back up. This only happened when those 2 players got hot. If you went to the exact time stamp on those movies, if the players had been cold for awhile, no problem.

My Apex and Norcent are both having problems, and I've ordered another Koss. This is a great progressive scan player for $39, other than the autoplay-at-the-beginning-issue. It stays cool and has incredible picture quality.

The good: Plays nearly everything, great price. The bad: My unit died on me in 8 months, although I had a replacement plan from Sears. The unit took awhile to spin power up, which was especially annoying because it had an unusual quirk where if you use the remote to put it in standby mode and you wanted to eject the disk at the console, you either had to a) bring it out of standby using the remote, or b) power the thing off and then back on again in order to eject it. I was a good little player before it died, but I opted for a Sony as a replacement.

$30 at Sears this week (11/25/03) with $5 instant discount coupon from the sales flyer. What a bargain!!

It has no display on the machine but the onscreen display is very nice unlike many other low-end Apex units. The JPEG picture slide show can be accompanied by MP3 files playing in the background, nicely done (unlike many low-end Apex units :)

It plays DVD-R and DVD+R discs perfectly :) even plays one of my poorly authored disc that my other hi-end DVD player refused to play. The zoom feature zooms the picture at 2X, 3X, 4X and 5X very smoothly. I wish it had 1.2X, 1.4X, 1.6X, 1.8X zoom so that wide-screen DVD playback can be zoomed to fit better on the standard 4:3 TV screen. This set is perfect for bedroom.

My unit seems to be slow when waking up from standby when I hit the Eject button on the player. Since it has no display I didn't know what it was doing during 10-15 seconds of no activity before the door finally opened.

Best low end DVD player around. Good picture and sound quality. Plays retail DVD of course. Plays DVD-R and DVD-RW and seems very tolerant of authoring and burning method used.
Plays VCD with bitrate to at least 2150.
Played an XSVCD with a peak bitrate of 5800 perfectly. Make sure you use the standard 441000 sample rate for audio on VCD/SVCD. If you use 48000 sample rate you get slow playback.
Very trim,less than 2" tall.

Great dvd player for great price of $35 at Sears.
Very easy to make it region-free. Recipe from http://www.regionfreedvd.net/ slightly modified according to my experience:

1. Learn how to reach PAL/NTSC selection from main menu. You'll probably need to switch it blindly (see below).

2. Press <Menu> followed by 1-6-7-1-9 to get access to HIDDEN CONFIGURATION MENU

3. Select "Configuration" item and press "0".
The player will switch to Configuration 0 which is region-free but with PAL output by default. So your TV will become black and white, and it may even loose synchronization.

4. Press Exit to get to main menu and switch Display output back to NTSC. If you don't see the picture well, the sequence is Down-Down-Down-OK-Down-OK.

Got this as a gift & checked it out for about 1 hr. just to make sure it worked OK.

Unlike others I've tried with considerable distortion, MP3 quality is decent. Displays about 20 characters of filename.

Video quality is quite acceptable - played SVCD with no glitches. Has component output. DVD quality is decent.

Remote has small buttons - could be better. No display on unit itself which is silver & very slender. The menuing system to navigate & change common play features (audio track, etc) is convenient & nicely done.

JPG slideshow worked OK but loading a particular 3 megapixel JPG took about 4 seconds.

My Apex 5131 is better on all counts but for $35, this performs very well.

Comments:
Great dvd player. Has played all dvds, vcds, and mp3 discs I have put in it. Do not have any region 2 discs yet (some on the way) to test it. Tried the older codes (1,6,7) on menu but that does not seem to bring up any menus. Other than that everything thus far has worked great.
