Nice unit... It does have overheating issues with prolonged use, but I haven't had any problems since I bought a set of game dice from Target and a set of adhesive Velcro stickers from Home Depot.
I used these to create a set of four "risers" that elevate the DVD unit a good half-inch above the top of the television unit it had been sitting on. I've had zero heating issues since then. |

It's nice and very small, which makes it easier to move the player around (ie to friend's house or into camper or RV) and can run from any 12v DC source so using car adapter is also possible.
I would have given this one a higher score except it has a few problems. This player were meant to be sold cheap and as a result, they were built cheaply. The stock power supply puts out a lot more than the required 12v DC. You should throw it out and get an universal power supply from Radio Shack or Target, this will reduce the risk of overheating.
Secondly, about 90% of DVD plays fine, some will play but may skip or freezes and the rest just won't load at all.
Third, there's a few buttons on the unit itself, forcing you to rely on the remote control for functions like selecting subtitles, accessing menu, etc. A bad design. So far, no universal remote I have works with this Koss player.
Try not to leave any disc playing for extended period of time, especially when it's going t obe left unattended for a while. I heard of someone who had a melted DVD disc because the player was running at the DVD menu for a whole day.
Region/Macrovision hack only works on older model, newer model is not hackable. Something like made by Nov 2002 or older? If your player is of newer model, you're out of luck and older player is becoming harder to find.
This player is normally found at Target stores but dcan be found at a few other stores like Meijer as well as online at amazon.com |

| I don't think it get's better than this for the price. The only bad things is the adapter which I replaced. I think I'm writing a review again, but I think it's worth it. I've seen these go on ebay without the remote control. Do NOT buy it without the remote control, it's pretty worthless without it. |

Works with no-name, and brand-name discs.
Burned media on Pioneer A04. Burned and authored DVDs and VCDs using Pinnacle 8. Music burned onto CD, DVD-R & DVD-RW with RecordNow DX that came with burner. Everything played without any problems and worked as expected.
Even after playing music all day, I haven't noticed any overheating problems, although I have it propped up half an inch since the air slots are on the bottom.
Has alot of really great features for such a small and inexpensive player. You vcan only see 5 or so tracks at a time but they are numbered so you could print out a play list. And the remote control is very useable.
I purchased the 5 disc GE model (DGE505N) at the same time and was very dissapointed with the picture quality, too muddy and dark. The MP3 features weren't as good and the remote wasn't as useful.
The remote has a power button on it, but the unit still emits some noise so I turn it off at the unit. |

| Worked fine but will have to purchase another dvd player. I had an Apex 1500 that superbly played SVCD, however after popping in 5 different SVCD's on 3 different media I could not get them to work. The player only reads certain SVCD. Another problem I noticed is the picture quality on a regular DVD was bad and a ghost image appeared in one corner. This is not my tv nor the dvds I play because I tested it with another dvd player and other dvd discs. I hope its not the optical lens but I think this dvd player is overhyped. I'm still looking for the holy grail of dvd players that is progressive scan and plays every type of media including wma and jpeg.... Still searching. |

Bought this unit at Target for $85 in December. It divides time between the TV in the kitchen, my computer room, and my car. I bought it to play MP3 Cd's in my car, through the existing stereo. Very portable.
It plays DVD's and home-made VCD's (on CD-R) perfectly. Like another user wrote, the icons/graphics lead me to believe that it uses the same hardware/firmware as the Apex units... however, the Koss remote is MUCH better than the remote I got with my Apex.
I haven't had a problem with overheating, although I hear that's a known problem with this unit.
If you can find one cheap, it makes a great 2nd DVD/VCD player.

Great player for non US use. 12V input, easy hackable, plays on NTSC and PAL (not tested) TV.
So far I tested SVCD with CVD subtitle, CVD, CD-R with mp3 files, CD-RW, DVD region 1,2 and all (after hack). Looks good for my purpose. I didn't judge picture quality (colors...). |

| I got my unit from Target on sale for $70. Funny thing was out of all the units on display, only the pink ones with some art design was for the sale price. It is very small and looks good and is responsive. But it SUCKS! This thing overheats at about the 1 hour mark and will skip violently until it freezes completely up. Its total shame because other than that it works and looks great. I reluctantly returned it as it could never finish a movie. |

I highly recommend this unit for anybody looking for a semi-portable unit. I.e., you want to use the unit indoors, maybe in the car, but not strapped around your neck while out for a jog.
I got mine at an Atlanta Target store about 6 weeks ago for $100.00. (Lukily I got the blue one..no hot pink ;-)
I love this unit. I'm more impressed with this unit that either my old Toshiba SD2002 or my Apex AD-600. It's WAY faster than those and it plays everything that I throw at it...VCDs on cheap CD-R disks, DVDs, MP3 disks and regular audio CDs.
If there's a firmware hack for this I'd love to know where to download it...can't seem to find one in my regular spots. |

Okay, it got a 10 because I could find nothing I have made which wouldn't play in this. I am 99% sure that the components in this player come from the same place as APEX players. Therefor, should play most anything.
I am very pleased with the performance, it gives my $200 DVD a run for the money. I purchased because it's size was not much larger than my Supertek AV-Baby, had a NICE full-size remote, and ran on 12-Volts (can use in the car)
What is better is that it doesn't skip. I simulated the jolts and jogs by shaking it while it played. Didn't miss a beat. Pretty impressive!
A technical note of caution. The AC Adapter that comes with it runs at 17 volts (the adapter claims 12 volts). When the player powers up, it drops to around 15 volts. This causes the excessive heat you get from using this player. I went to radio shack, picked up a 2 amp variable-voltage adaptor (sale for $14). Heat problem is solved (it outputs 12.41 volts, nice-and-safe!).
You could make this baby cord-free like I have (got the Intek 5" Gamecube monitor and battery pack), and everything could fit in a small laptop bag. I use it for the weekends I work.
Only complaint - Hot pink was the only color left at the store... Not as fun to show off when the thing is so sissyfied! |

I think this is a great little unit (other than the colors). It will play VCD/CVD/SVCD directly from a data disk. It's made in China and the features/functions are very similar to my Apex unit. When I tried using a DVD+R disc, it wouldn't read it at first but then read it fine the following day, so I'm not yet sure of compatibility with these discs.
There is also an undocumented feature: Drop a CD full of JPEGs in it and it will display them in a slideshow.
Video outputs include composite, S-Video, and Compoenent. Audio is standard stereo RCA and optical.
Overall I think this is a nice portable unit that would also function as a second or backup machine. |

| I just bought this player yesterday, and it works great so far. It is Region hackable and macrovision can be disabled through downloadable flash file. It is also the only portable player I know of that has optical audio output and component video too. It is only sold in Target stores in butt-ugly colors, but if you can get past that, it is a steal for $99. |
