Funny that nobody has mentioned that this system will play PAL Discs and convert to NTSC. Not many entry-level players do this.

Got this to replace my old Toshiba SD-3108 because I was planning to burn my own DVD-R discs in iDVD and also because my Sanyo PLV-60HT front projector would take progressive scan and I wanted a progressive scan DVD player.

I was not impressed with the progressive scan on this player, the "screen door" effect was quite pronounced, particularly in very red or orange sections of the picture. There is also a red bleed through in "hot spots" such as the bridge of people's noses that is annoying.

It does seem to play most things I put in. Except for a few MPG MOV files I had burned to VCD (some played and some didn't on the same VCD but as far as I can tell they are the same type of files). Plays DVD-R well using the no no brand that came with my Pioneer A05 drive. Will try out the cheap Matrix blanks I am getting.

I found the Panasonic S35K for $70 after rebate, I hope it will be a better progressive scan player. This one isn't bad for composite hookups.

Takes awhile to load DVDs, VCDs, SVCDs when inserted, but all around a massive improvement from my previous DVD player in both picture and sound quality. Not sure about the progressive scan capabilities, but VCDs & SVCDs played flawlessly for me.

Very happy with player.

I have burned a lot of VCDs and SVCD using Nero and it has played them without any problem. I didn't have to use the VCD header trick. When you put in a SVCD, the screen displayed SVCD. Chapter menu work well in VCD and SVCD. I have used the cheapest CD-R and have had no problem. I had taken the same CD's to the store and tried in some other Sony and Panasonic players and they rejected it.

The quality of the video has been great. have not used the progressive scan though.

Playes MP3 files without any problem. Has random feature which works well. It does not show the long file name though.

Cons: Could not get the subtitles in SVCD.
It seems to get very hot.
Remote could be better.

Tried my TDK 650 4-10XCDRW copied & encoded SVCD burned w/nero (used the so called "tmpge header trick" after encoding an SVCD cdrw) it's supposed to "trick" DVD players into thinking it's an VCD and not an SVCD so it will play it. The 6001P display (on the DVD not TV screen) identified it as an "SVCD" but would not reproduce anything on screen. It would display & select on screen; play,ff,rw etc, but the player would not enable any of the functions. ?Will this player recognize disc's encoded as SVCD without using the "TMPGE header trick?" . Does play my VCD encoded CDR disc's but prefer higher res of the SVCD. Any comments appreciated. chilledmug.

I had an image fold back problem with this player on my RCA MM36110 TV in progressive scan mode only. Fold back description: vertical mirrored ghost image about 1 inch wide on left side and lack of image on last one inch of right side.
I went back to Best Buy and a similar fold back showed on their MM36110.
The problem was finally found to be in the TV and NOT in the DVD player. An RCA Independent warrenty repair man needed to use the service menues on the TV to correct this.
Now the TV and the DVD player work great together in progressive scan mode.
It is amazing that RCA shipped the two TVs I tested with a simple calibration error from the factory.

I've also noticed the green stripe at the right hand edge of the screen mention by another poster. I use it with a RCA widescreen TV as they also suggest is when you see the problem.

Comments:
While this DVD player is quite excellent at reading formats other than DVD, the progressive scan feature is awful.

On many combinations of this DVD player and particular TVs, the synching is off and what you get is an image off to the left with a very apparent green vertical stripe on the right side of the image. Ironically, this seems to happen more-so with RCA/Proscan TVs. I've tried two of these players on RCA TVs, and both of them had this issue, so it's not a problem with a defect player.

This basically renders the progressive scanning feature useless. I think someone would be way better off with an interlaced RC5240P under these circumstances.

The unit is also extremely sensitive to static electricity. If you so much as approach the power button and cause a static charge, the unit will 'die' and require a reset by unplugging and replugging from the outlet. This is extremely annoying when you work in an carpetted electronic store and you want to show off a movie on a large screen TV. It happened to me quite a few times.

Not recommended at all.

My Sony 600 series 5 carousel dvd player broke(which I purchased for $650 4 years ago). I'm glad because I picked up this one for $199 which appears to play all formats I can throw at it (DVD of course, VCD, SVCD, XSVCD, MP3). The Sony only played DVDs and VCDs...sucky. I particularly love the XSVCD since at 720 x 480 resolution, I'm able to keep my DV-Cam video at its full resolution...a must have for all DV-Cam owners. I Can't wait to get a digital TV now to use the Progressive Scan Feature of the player, and see my home DV videos in full 720 X 480 resolution (non-interlaced). Even with my current S-Video TV connection, the clarity of my XSVCD at 720 x 480 NTSC is amazing. The on-screen menus are much friendlier and intuitive than my old Sony. I love and and highly recommend it, especially if you were considering the RCA 5240P which has been reported compatible with everything thrown at it (it appears this model is also compatible with everything--I'll test and re-post later), but also want DTS output and Progressive Scan features for the furure (or now if you have a DTS receiver and Digital TV).

Ripped and burned Caddyshack on HP DVD+RW with HP100i using Nero. Full DVD was 5.4 GB, so I had to eliminate special features to get it under 4.7 GB. Despite edits, it played flawlessly on the RCA6001P.
