I had previously posted comments about this player, but i see they are not published. No matter, as I have now had more experience, and can give a more thorough review.
First, it must be stated outright that this player cannot handle Matroska or Ogg. It can, however, despite what the manual says, play Divx 6, complete with multiple audio tracks. (It should be noted that Divx 6 compatability is limited -- multiple audio tracks as well as multiple subtitle streams [albeit basic subs; cannot handle different fonts, colors, tags, or special characters], however, no menus or chapters) The player also seems to have some issues with Qpel -- images blur, and remain blurred until a scene change, or camera motion occurs; the player will state that Qpel is unsupported, however, it will go right on ahead and play the file with the afore mentioned issues. (A minor irritation.)
High resolution files (larger than 640*480) result in skips during the playing. This also occurs in high bitrate files with a resolution of 640*480. The skipping is at random, and can range from as little as probably 10-15 frames (noticable, but you haven't missed anything) to a full 60 seconds. Also, depending on file resolution/bitrate, it may be frequent, or occur only once. For the most part, high bitrate (1000kbps) plays fine; exceptions are high framerate items (electrical flashes, slow-motion items, etc). As such, I have been feeding files through Alltoavi to knock the bitrate down to medium (usually i go no larger than 800kbps), as well as taking the resolution down to 400 width; files play flawlessly.
SVCDs suffer the same bitrate crashes -- after any such crash, audio is out of sync; can easily be corrected by pausing and unpausing.
Some MP3s and WMAs play fine, others don't. My only theory is that this player cannot handle audio highter than 192kbps, as some of the audio i have tried has been encoded at 256 or even 320kbps, and these files have not played at all. however, i've not taken the time to test this theory.
All in all, a great player for the money, and feeding files through alltoavi is a minor inconvinence, as quickly as it processes. |

Bad: Compared to my Philips 642, this Accurian won't play approximately 10% of DivX encoded files. I don't know why, but a given file that doesn't play on the Accurian (either on CD or DVD ISO) /will/ play on the Philips 642. It may have to do with compatibility with DivX 6 or high bitrate movies.
Mixed Feelings: Plays VCDs when the Philips 642 won't. Between the two, I'm about as compatible as you get. The remote doesn't suck too badly, though it could use a little work.
Documentation is minimal, and I can't find much on the web about this little gem. I have no idea if it spits out Macrovision or if it can be Region hacked, but there must be a way. I don't know the chipset currently. Sometimes doesn't detect Dolby Digital 5.1 and pukes out Dolby Pro Logic instead.
Pros: Small profile, lovely front bezel and display (mirrorred silver & green dotted display). No heat problems. Definitely a "top of the pile" device. Multi-card reader for camera flash cards.
TREMENDOUS PRO: I can't believe this myself, but the Accurian has a USB port in the front, ostensibly for thumb drives for view photographs. However, one little line in the instructions led me to investigate a theory that proved to be true. The instructions state that it's possible to browse and play Divx/Xvid/MPEG content from a flash drive. Then the instructions say something like "USB Port to be used for flash memory only" though no reason was given. I suspect that the mfr. wanted to turn people off from doing what I did successfully as documented below.
The port is USB 1.1. I ordered a Lacie Porsche 250GB portable drive from buy.com for $119.99 with free shipping, formatted it as FAT32 and started robocopy'ing all 220GB of my content onto the new drive (my other external drive is formatted as NTFS, so I had to get a new drive to attempt FAT32). I tried NTFS: No Go. With all of my movies now on the hot little Lacie Porsche rectangle drive with a single primary FAT32 partition, I walked slowly into the den and plugged the drive into the USB port on the front of the Accurian. I removed a DVD from the drive, made sure the hard drive was running, and powered up the Accurian.
Much to my disbelief, the Accurian scanned the entire 250GB for .mp3 files, of which there were only about 50. I said "Damn, where are my movies?" and started playing with the arrow buttons on the remote and the Enter button. I finally got it: the Accurian will search first for .mp3 files and display them, no matter where they are on the "drive". But if you press the "right" arrow enough it will bump up to the strangely presented /root of the "drive", which is counterintuitive in arrangement, with folders and subfolders arranged in alphabetical order in the left pane of the browser -- no matter if the subfolder is under a folder way down the list, the browser puts ALL subfolders and root folders in alphabetical order.
But did it play the content? Damn right it did. But I was limited by the USB 1.1 interface. DivX movie files encoded with at a high bitrate were blocky and the audio was a little choppy at >2000Kbps. VOB files from a commercial DVD (not compressed) didn't really play at all, though it tried awful hard. Most of my content played without issue and perfectly.
Bottom Line: For under $200, I can store and play 250GB of lower bitrate Divx/Xvid files, and play MPEG1 and MPEG2 files of reasonable bitrates. Consider the Accurian more of a USB adapter for your home theatre, toss all your stuff on a large portable drive, and sit and watch stuff forever. Perfect for when you want to show somebody a flick and don't have any spare DVD-R discs around, and you don't want to show them the flick on your laptop with the tiny speakers.
I've been searching for something like this for months and I haven't found anything like this for under $400. |
