Well, it died on the first day of November, shortly before its second year of ownership.

I've since gotten its first-cousin, the LG DR1F9H, since I like the Zenith/LG brand. It's affordable, and does everything you could ask of a DVD-recorder.

When you see that it starts not to read or skips DVDs, then you're in trouble. It'll conk out in 3 months.

My final rating for the DVR 413 is 7/10, overall.

I am not sure what happened to my old post when I first bought this DVR, back in January of 2005, but here I am, with a status report, having owned it nearly for 2 years.

First, this Zenith cost U$148.88 at Brandsmart USA (the Pinecrest, FL branch -- stay away from the vulgar salesmen and crowd, in the Hialeah branch).

2 years ago, that was a flippin' bargain. In fact, it still is.

Overall, this Zenith DVR is solid:

I have thrown every disc at it, and only the dreaded MEMOREX (any speed) have failed to be read by it, although the FUJI ones are sometimes touch and go, too.

I stick to Verbatim minus-Rs (x16/50 cake) because they are simply the most compatible of all the versions, which I buy for U$12.99 at Best Buy. An unbeatable combination of price and versatility.

(Taiyo Yudens are the best blank media, and though difficult to find now, sometimes you can get the older Sony DVD-Rs at Staples. If it says Made in Japan, it's probably a TY)

Nothing is meant to last forever, especially not in electronics, so I have noticed a small deterioration in disc compatibility of late, albeit it is so rare as not to really warrant mention (seeing how this is a review, I will do so, though).

I bought two DVDs from Amazon, one the classic "The Women", which fails to be read by this Zenith. The disc is readable in other players, without problem.

What I like about this DVR is its user-friendliness, a wonderful device to have if you're new to the DVR world.

Except for the firmware update, which you can get via 1-877-993-6484 (note: Zenith/LG customer service can be rather testy), it played and recorded anything I wanted, immediately.

The easy Audio/Video controls in front, are very convenient for attaching camcorders and gaming consoles, or a VCR from which you can then backup your non-Macrovision tapes.

Before I got a new Dell computer this past month, I used an older Apex AD-600 to make backups of my DVD collection, since it had Macro/Region off.

The DVR copied everything just fine, except of course, the CSS protected films -- which a person below mentioned (in reply to what I had written earlier, though now erased from Videohelp), and who suggested a device to circumvent it.

Not having tried it myself, I won't comment on that.

For those interested in the Region Free hack, here it is:

1. Open the DVD tray.

2. With the tray STILL OPEN, press 00000000 (eight zeroes) in succession.

3. "Congraturations [sic, lol!] Region Change Free!"

You can also do this in reverse, if for whatever reason your disc acts up, and you wish to go to Region 1 (also reversible at any time).

When you press the 0 eight times, you will then get this message:

4. "Loader Region Protect!".

Don't believe customer service or others who wish to sell you patches, like they did with me. I got this code on an LG player (LG of South Korea own Zenith now), and it worked just fine. I've done it a hundred times since 2005, without any loss or damage.

The on-screen menu is very elegant, it finalises the menu in easy-to-read teal on grey, and finally, the features of the remote, whilst a bit long and clunky, are everything you could want (including x100 speed forward, and reverse). Obviously, this has Progressive Scan, which is a must for HDTV.

All in all, despite the years, and the normal wear-and-tear I have put it through, the Zenith keeps on performing well.

Perhaps not the best DVR out there, especially not now, but it was a thoroughbred until now!

(Touch wood :)

Quick set-up card received with factory refurbished unit was INCORRECT and caused me some grief. The unit DOES NOT HAVE an RF modulator connected to the RF out jack, and cannot be used with an RF-only TV.

The MANUAL is correct: the RF out only passes through the RF from the antenna input jack (antenna in is also used for the DVR's TV receiver function).

So far, the unit fulfills my main requirement of transferring old VHS tapes to DVD (tried DVD+R and +RW), and it also works well as a DVD player (but does not play VCDs or SVCDs - pity).

Unit earns a 1 for not even being able to last a year since purchase last X-mas, also customer service really bites and some of the technical people I have spoken to are boobs. One even described the class odf DVD recorders as "finicky"! What, are we talking about cat food here?

No, we are talking about basic quality and customer service!

Although LG(Zenith) did take the unit back into the factory in April(dead unit/power supply). The unit has been back to their service center again last month, with the writer portion of the machine having gone south, I received the unit back this week, and the unit is out again!

I don't know what type of lemon law would cover this unit, but I cannot afford to have a legal fight over this issue, so I will try to reach as many people as I can through this forum.

BUY ANOTHER BRAND! LG/ZENITH have no idea how to support this product and this customer!

***Update*** When this unit works, it works great! Used in conjunction with Sima 'Go DVD' box to archive DVD's and Sima 'Color Corrector' for VHS home videos. Have had quality issues with unit, since the first week; has been in to service 3 times since, Christmas 2004. Unit finally died after maybe getting 3 or 4 discs per week recorded. I preferred menu structure unit records with on a -R vs. +R DVD(menu bar gives more space for track title) +R menu is a snap shot frame box with maybe 10 character space for title. Anyway, unit finally died. Power LED and clock flash and will not accept input from remote, or power switch.
Either a poorly QC'd unit, or marginal parts.

After trying brand "LO" for 2 weeks and not wanting everything to have a green hue I returned it. Drove down to WPB"BrandsmartUSA" and bought a 413. Great to see things in "living color". Copied to 8x -R,+R and +RW x2.4 and x4 with no problems.
A real bonus is after doing the remote region free thing I found I was able to copy mv protected tapes from vcr to 413 using "ant out" on vcr to "ant in" on DVR413. Tried DV in and Y/W/R, but they didn't copy. Now I have to redo everything copied during the previous two weeks.
All in all a great machine for the price.

Ok...here is something wierd. Victoria_USA reported that this unit would not allow her to make recordings from a macrovision off/region free player, so I recommended purchasing a device called the "vidtrackusa". As I mentioned, I have (2) of these devices and never had a problem; however, there seems to be some sort of "stealth-macrovision seeking" feature on this unit, which may inhibit recordings from certain DVD films (after removing Macrovision)?

Let me explain...I made a backup copy of "The Grudge", utilizing my "vidtrackusa" via connection to my Sony DVP CX870D Player to the Zenith DVR413. Everything worked great...but, then I got the idea to backup "The Ring" on the same disc...well, here's the catch, the Zenith displayed, "Cannot copy/copy protected", when I inserted the disc and pressed "record". What?...there must be some mistake...I tried pausing, stopping , re-starting, powering off, the works...and still got the same message. I then placed the disc in my second Sony DVP CX870D (caught it on sale) and was able to backup this movie, via "vidtrackusa_#2" and a Panasonic DMR-E75vs, without any problems...I then took the backup copy created and placed it in my player connected to the Zenith DVR413 and recorded it without any messages or problems....Yeah...I know what your thinking, what if I didn't have two recorders? The only thing that I noticed was that my original copy of "The Ring" was recorded on a dual layer disc, which may have somehow found a way to send a macro signal to the Zenith...or maybe it's that "stealth" thing I was speaking of.

Anyway, it is still a great machine...just be leary if you plan on utilizing it as your primary source for backingup your private collections...it seems to have CGMS/A or CGMS/D wired in with a turbo booster!

The following information maybe useful information:

THE THREE LEVEL OF MACROVISION:

LEVEL I STANDARD AUDIO & VIDEO ENCRYPTION.
LEVEL II CGMS/A (COPY PREVENTION AGAINST VCRs)
LEVEL III CGMS/D (COPY PREVENTION AGAINST DVDs)

CGMS/A (COPY GENERATION MGMT SYSTEM/ANALOG)
CGMS/D (COPY GENERATION MGMT SYSTEM/DIGITAL)

I purchased this unit yesterday at Brandsmart USA for $178.88, up $30.00 dollars from the December 2004 price. I needed to replace a returned Balance Dual Format +/- R Recorder (DR4111). The Balance had a great idea (ie. chapter editing on +/- R discs and zoom), but lacks in workmanship and quality. Zenith has a solid record and offers the same plus better features...what a great machine...20 minutes after I set it up, I activated the region free hack:

From Mfg. LG -
1) Insert Any other Region DVD Film (not Region 2).
2) Wait until Player Rejects/Ejects the Disc.
3) Press '0' seven times.
4) Select Yes when prompted w/"Congratulations, Region Free?"
Power Off Player.

Victoria_USA,

Although the manufacturer does not recommend using a Region 2 Disc (some already work), I didn't have any other Regions available...So, I placed my Region 2 disc in the player and got the message, "incorrect/wrong region". After ejection I pressed '0' seven times and selected "yes" for Region Free...I closed the unit and watched my movie. If you haven't tried so already, try this with your unit and hopefully you will be able to watch your Region 2 Collection...oh yeah, eventually I turned it off.

As far as removing Macrovision, I purchased a device called "vidtrackusa" about two years ago for my Panasonic DMR-E30. It is still available for less than 80 bucks US and it will remove all forms of copy protection (ie. all 3 Levels of CGSM). You can wait for a hack to come out for this unit, but I was so happy with this device that I bought two. The web site changed to 'threedoubletree.com', or you can search for it with google.

Hope this is helpful.

Bought at Brandsmart USA for $148.88. Only gripe I have about the recorder is that after turning on the power to the unit, it takes a bit to finish initialization and get a signal to the television.

Verry nice DVD's playable on my Pioneer DV434, able to title Disc & recorded "tracks". Most media, no problem - support says issue with Memorex(R), but are snding an update disc. Only problem not resolved with support. Will not record over 4 hrs. on EQ(6hr) mode, locks up after 4hrs. Purchased to transfer home videos. Great Video/Audio output. Plenty of features. Great value for around $300.

Otherwise no major problems. A nice unit.

Bought 2 weeks ago at BrandsmartUSA for 148 and worth every penny. The recorder works great in 2 hour rec and has pretty good quality in 4 hr rec mode. I like that so far it hasnt been picky using cheap media (20 cent MUST 001 dvd-r) and records both dvd formats. Also has a DV inout for Dig cameras. Great buy considering its a name brand product and inexpensive.

Does what it says. No problems. I purchased the unit for only 148.88 at bradsmart usa. Well worth every penny. I have used cheap COMPUSA, value discs, with no problems. I have used both DVD-R and DVD+R discs. It also works with DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, cannot ask for more. It allows naming of titles without affecting compatability with other players.
